Happenings around Wichita

You know, sometimes there’s things that just don’t go into a post all by themselves. So here’s some of my musings:

  • Heights football coach Rick Wheeler was invited to the NFL’s Youth Football Summit in Canton, Ohio, during the time leading up to the Hall of Fame inductions. (next week)

He was one of 51 coaches selected, that’s one from each state and one from Washington, D.C.  The NFL expects 20 former NFL players who are currently coaching at the high school level to be there as well.

  • Augusta’s Alec Hess, a soon-to-be sophomore, went to the Adidas quarterback camp at the University of Nebraska last month and won his division for the second straight summer.

“We did different drops and, of course,  you throw it to a target. If you hit it, it’s one point and if you hit the middle, it’s three points.
It’s a real fun camp, just hanging out in the dorms with some guys that you’ve never met before…. They have coaches from all over and they have players from all over. The coaches really help you a lot. We went into the film room at Nebraska and (offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach) Shawn Watson, he really breaks it down. We watch film of NFL players. Like last year it was Drew Brees, and we also watch the quarterbacks at Nebraska, Sam  Keller and Joe Ganz and Zac Taylor.”

  •  The Pretty Prairie Rodeo is coming up next week — yipee! It’s the 71st rodeo and it’s billed as Kansas’ largest night rodeo. I’m sure someone out there knows a high schooler who’s in rodeo.
  • We are four weeks from the first day of school and just over four weeks from the first day of fall practice.
  • I’ll be updating the photo post — thanks to a Maize parent I have a ton of photos to put on the site. Feel free to send sports photos or videos to joanna@varsitykansas.com

How about mentioning the Shrine All-Star 5K? There are several local XC stars participating, such as Colin Hagan of KMC, Laura Nightengale and Andrew Wagner of El Dorado, and several others.
