Derby football: Team camp
July 11, 2008 @ 3:09 p.m. by Joannaby joanna
Brandon Clark gave me an update on his Derby team that made the playoffs last year, finishing 5-5 on year after going 1-8, two years after finishing 0-9.
The Panthers finished their team camp today.
Here’s what he had to say:
“We just got done this morning with our team camp. We had five of the most physical practices I’ve seen. It was exciting. I got goosebumps.
“I was hoping for it, but not toally expecting it. We kind of did something different than most teams. Most do team camp and then padded camp. We went to padded camp kind of blind earlier this summer and that helped us with what we have to work on.
“We split up our team camp, went varsity, then freshmen, then middle school. With the varsity the first couple days it was fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals and then we worked on the basic stuff and then after that we worked on some new stuff.
“I feel our middle school program is where we were at the sophomore level a couple years ago. The system has been in there and we have seventh graders going to be eighth graders and eighth graders going to be freshmen. We’re starting to line the program up pretty well. A lot of the middle school coaches were at the high school camp and all of the high school coaches were at the middle school camp. Freshmen combined, we had about 120 kids. At the middle school, we had about 100.”
Clark also talked about wide receiver Tyler Dunham, who has been mentioned by multiple posters on this blog. He said about Dunham, “He’s an awesome basketball player. He’s about 6-3 right now. We went to padded camp at Tulsa, and he’s one of the names their head coach talked about. He was just making catches all over the place.”
Last year he was the backup quarterback. He could have played wide receiver but suffered a shoulder injury in practice.

Coach Clark will have Derby back with the top programs soon. Going to Camp in Tulsa is a Great idea and will do nothing but make them better. I look for good things this season from Derby.

And I’ve heard that the top kicker in the nation just moved into town from Arizona.
In high school football with the touch-back rule how it is, a kicker that kicks the ball into the end-zone is one of the most important players on a team. I think the touch-backs are even more valuable than this kid’s ability to hit from 40+ yards.

With Engwall, the kicking game at Derby is done! The Defense should be better & faster. The offense, i dont think will be outstanding, just consistant. Dunham will be a nice addition…good hands as he has shown on the court!! A kid by the name of Ian nichols also looks very sticky fingered….i think he will be a surprise.. possibly an occasional play for a tight-end…and the Q.B will be as elusive as ever, not to mention an accurate passer. If Westmoreland is a beast…….then show us, all the way thru the game…1-4 quarters. This is your last year of H.S. Football……make it count!!

With Engwall, the kicking game in Derby is done….The defense should be better and faster. The offense will be better with Dunham as an additional receiver…….not to mention Ian Nichols….he could also be a surprise and a better blocker than a few of the starters from last year….if Clark gives him a chance. Q.B. will be as elusive as ever, and an accurate passer….If in fact Westmoreland is a beast.. then show us all the way thru the game…1-4 quarters…Remember this is your last year of High School Football, make it count……and become the Band of Brothers you aspire to be.
