Wichita Heights’ Ian Knight

Heights coach Rick Wheeler and I talked a little bit today about a future story, his upcoming trip to Canton and Ian Knight.

I then gave Knight, a defensive end, a call to talk about how the recruiting is going.

Here’s what he had to say:

He hasn’t gone to any camps this summer, other than Heights’ team camp in Tulsa. When I asked him why, he said, “Pretty much all the schools that have shown the right amount of intrest have offered or have seen me at camp.”

Before his junior year, though, he went to camps at Michigan and LSU. He’s been offered scholarships by Illinois, Iowa State, Colorado State and Tulsa.

I asked him about KU and K-State, but he said “I decided I really didn’t want to go to school in-state. It didn’t seem they had a plan for me.  Or if they had a plan for me, it was to back up another guy. I didn’t see myself like that.”

So was it a matter of you wanting to get out of Kansas? “It’s great to get an away-from-home experience, but it wasn’t everything.”

As for the front-runners, it’s Illinois and Iowa State. “They’re bigger programs. I like their defensive line coaches. They’ve got great defensive line coaches.”

I’ve always loved Ron Zook, so I asked his thoughts on Zook — “He’s a funny guy. He’s really into his players.”

Knight’s busy getting ready for the upcoming season, he’s setting up official visits right now, he did an interview with Scout.com yesterday, Iowa State coach Gene Chizik is supposed to be calling him soon and he’s expecting a call from Zook on Saturday.

And he expects that as soon as he’s done with making his official visits, he’ll make his commitment.

  1. TFL says:

Knight just doesn’t pop out on film like a guy like Kevin Young or Forrest Stucky, but he’s obviously got some upside or these coaches wouldn’t be recruiting him.

Ian is big fast and strong and will be a contributing player even as a freshman. Trust me I play with him
