Summer girls basketball (two teams)
July 16, 2008 @ 11:54 a.m. by Joannaby joanna
Another post in the “I aim to please category.” A comment came that there’s way too much love here on the blog for boys basketball and not enough for girls basketball, so here we go on the girls.
Checked out hoopgurlz.com’s rankings — Derby’s Joanna McFarland is ranked 27th, while Carroll’s Julia Marshall is ranked by position and Andover Central’s Tiffany Bias is in the top 100 for the 2010 class.
I talked with Chris Lane of the Wichita Legend, and then got an e-mail about the Wichita Bearcats from Michael Marshall.
The Bearcats have Lindsey Keller (Goddard), Tiffany Bias (Andover Central) and Julia Marshall (Carroll). They went 5-1 at the Oregon Trail Tournament in Oregon City, Ore. (Sidenote — did anyone play the old computer game Oregon Trail? I loved that game!)
Here’s a link to a note on the Bearcats and Joanna McFarland (Derby), who played with the Bearcats but is now with the Mile High Magic Gold (Colo.)
I talked with Lane for quite a while this morning about the Legend, which has Abby Fawcett (Carroll), Abby Henning (Carroll), Audra Pfannennstiel (Rose Hill), Mary Sims (Heights), Emile Blakesley (Hutchinson), Brooke Crockett (Heights), Kerisha Broadus (Heights), Jhasmin Bowen (Heights), Sara Hoover (Clearwater), Stephanie Glasper (Heights).
The team just returned from being on the road since July 5th, playing in front of college coaches. They went 2-2 at a Dallas tournament, playing against Brittney Griner, the top-ranked player in the 2009 class. Check here for a video and story on her that includes her dunking. Impressive
Lane: “She’s a dunking sensation. She tried twice against us. We had to foul her. They let them (dunk) in warmups, and she puts on a little show. She dunks like men easily — two hands underneath the goal, one-hand running and jumping, a tomahawk. Oh yes. Trust me.
“There were 80 Division I coaches and (Griner’s team) had 7 major division I players on that team.”
After Dallas, the Legends went to Birmingham, Ala., the second biggest tournament they’ll go to this summer (they head to the Battle of the Bayou this Sunday) .
“We played against the top three teams from New York at that tournament…. Pat Summitt, Vivian Stringer, Dawn Staley, Theresa Witherspoon, K-State, WSU, Oklahoma, KU. There were 100-150 coaches at our games, mostly from SEC, Big 12, Big Ten. That tournament was set up for evaluations, so there were top teams in all the different states. We had pretty close games for the most part. We went 1-4.
“The goal is to get in front of the coaches. We were pretty much a Midwest team with not a lot of high profile players on the team, so we were lucky to get to play against these players… A lot of coaches where there to see (particular players), and it allowed our kids to get evaluated.”
After playing two games on the 9th in Birmingham, the team went to Atlanta for a night game that same day. They played six games there, going undefeated.
The New Orleans tournament is up next and it’s a chance to get players ranked by hoopgurlz.com
If you have info on any other teams, please feel free to share, that’s what the blog is about. I write about what I know and you all are a great resource.

I would like more information on the Lady Blazers that were mentioned in a previous post. If you include them along with The Legends, and the Bearcats, that would make about 3 or 4 Ladies teams worth a mention correct? Does Chris Lane know anything about them?

stephd1972 — this wasn’t a “only two teams are worth a mention.” Rather it was a title to hopefully draw people in. If you know something about the Blazers or would like to post it here, feel free. There’s readers that want to know.
As for Chris Lane knowing anything about the Blazers, I have no idea.

I am a parent of one of the Wichita Lady Blazers and I AM NOT “stephd1972″. I can give you more info on the Lady Blazers older team if you want it. The team has 11 players from across Wichita and surrounding areas like Rose Hill, Andover, and Maize.
We have played in KC, OKC, DAL, NE so far this summer and will be leaving for Memphis, TN this weekend. We finished in 4th in the Battle of the Border in KC, we went to Championship in Kearney NE finishing 2nd, we finished 2nd in DAL at the Texas Shoot Out. Ashia Woods was named an all american at Kearney NE, so far this summer this we have an overall record of about 23-7. Again, I am NOT “stephd1972″ or “cmscott” I don’t have any issues with the reporting because I know Joanna and don’t think she is prejudice. I also know how the media works having played before as well also these girls were only in 9th and 10th grade. Their time will come.

Nice, VYPE, you do a great job with giving us info on the team and then get a plug for the mag. Impressive. I need to do that — figure out ways to pimp this blog. Got some ideas for me?

I am amazed at all the division 1 girls basketball players we have without these girls being involved with potential players.

I went to watch about 9 different tournament this summer and I thought the the the Wichita Besrcats was the best time That I saw from Wichita. I am a former player from wichita and now a college coach and I was very proud of the way the Bearcats represented wichita in my eyes the Bearcats and Wichita Heights girls team have really put wichita on the National scene.

Hey VYPE. Nice lack of journalistic integrity by saying “we” while describing your daughter’s summer team. Sign in under your own name if you are going to use “we”, otherwise it hurts your credibility as a publisher/journalist. I am sure they are a good team (don’t follow girls basketball) and your daughter is a good player, no need to continuously and shamelessly go out of your way to get her name in print. Be impartial while signing in under VYPE: if you sign in under VYPE, you are supposed to be a professional…..act like it.
Also, let someone else pat you on the back for your children’s achievements before you dislocate your shoulder doing it to yourself.
