First Weekend of the High School Football Season

September 4 (Thursday)

Carroll at Heights

September 5 (Friday)

Hutchinson at Rockhurst (Kansas City)

How crazy is this? Talk about starting the season with a bang. BC and Heights on Thursday night to jump-start City League play and then Hutchinson hits the highway to take on perennial power Rockhurst.

There might not be a better weekend of high school football.

Carroll QB Blake Bell is getting a lot of buzz for someone who hasn’t thrown the ball in a high school game. So it will be very interesting to see how he fairs in his first game against a pretty good defense. I don’t know much about Heights but they are pretty athletic on the defensive side and they have Ian Knight one of the top defensive ends in the state according to Rivals.

Hutchinson vs. Rockhurst will pit two football powers against one another. Hutchinson finished last season as the fourth-ranked team in USA Today’s Super 25 prep Football regional rankings while Rockhurst was seventh.

So what do you think? Has there been two better games to start the football season?

Panther 44- go to USAtoday.com, then go to sports, then go to high school, then click on super 25.

Hutch was ranked 17th nationally as well.

Rockhurst’s quarterback, Nathan Scheelhaase just commited to Illinois last night over OU, KU, Iowa, and Mizzou.

There’s also a link to another ranking site on the VK message board that has Hutch in a preseason ranking.

I believe that Nathan Scheelhaase lives in the Shawnee Mission West school district.

  4. TFL says:

Yes, Scheelhaase lives in Kansas. Rockhurst is right on State Line Road and being private, they can get Kansas kids too.

I believe that both the Temple brothers were Kansas kids too.

I know a bunch of folks in Missouri don’t like the fact that Rockhurst can pluck some talented inner city KCK kids and give them tuition assistance etc.

No doubt the Hutch, Rock game will be a great season opener. I wonder…….do you think the game will be televised on one of those local cable channels? The fact that Hutch has dropped to 5A will definitely help them with their program. The winning tradition of any High School Football program will recruit, Soccer and Even Cross Country runners. Better to be on the sideline and part of a perrenial gridiron powerhouse than to compete in the other HS Sports. I do however believe Hutch will not find an easy path after Rockhurst. Other 6A teams on their schedule have gotten better. Derby, Maize, Goddard, not to mention the Salina Schools. I predict they will not go undefeated this year. May win the State 5A title, after suffering a blemish on their undefeated record.

Happy to hear at least someone (Fballfn) sees farther than the score at the end of the game. I have attended 3,4,5,&6A games for over 20 years, all successful and sometimes state champions. The longer the teams win……..the longer the line is on the sideline. Filled with student/athletes who never get in the game. Yet they are there and part of something special…..They may not excell in other sports that have fewer players and competition is tough. But in Football they can at least still be part of the team. I was at the State 6A game last season……The Hutch sideline is a whole lot longer now than it was 4 years ago before they won their first State Championship
