Shrine Bowl cross country run
July 25, 2008 @ 8:44 a.m. by Joannaby joanna
As part of the Shrine Bowl - which is Saturday, are you going? — there will be a 5k run featuring the All-Star cross country teams.
It’s Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m. in Emporia. There’s a 1 mile fun run/walk at 8:45. There will be high school runners, middle schoolers and and open and masters runners. Middle school and high school athletes can enter for $10 and they get a T-Shirt and award for participating, a free ticket to the Shrine Bowl football game. There’s also free food after the run.
Course: The course starts west of Welch Stadium, runs on the streets of Emporia and finishes in Welch Stadium.

What do you have to do to be eligible to be an “All Star”?

Good question, Jimmy V.
I’m up here in Emporia — a family weekend. Quite a concept, I know. But that cross country run is too early for me and the kids, so let us know what happens. I’m betting PanFan will hook us up.

Thanks for your vote of confidence Joanna! First of all Jimmy V. The eligibility issue you asked about. Just like the Football Game, you had to be a graduated senior. Next, i guess you had to be picked and then accept the nomination to compete. Bryce Volz and Jacob Davies were picked but did not compete. Volz, i know has been dealing with an injury, not sure why Davies didnt compete. The All-Stars consisted of student/athletes who did well during their season. Most of the announcements i heard were all current champions of a particular League, Regional, or State competition. The down side, in my meager opinion is that the 5K was an open event. The overall winner was a College Runner, and it sort of took the limelight away from the Selected All Star runners on the Boys side. The Girls winner was one of the All Stars! I understand that it was a fundraiser for the Shriners, and definitely for a good thing. But unlike the Football players, the Runners had to compete against College Athletes, none the less, yes they were scored different Their were two local H.S runners who competed as unattached, meaning they were not eligible to compete as All Stars. O’Connell from Andover and Wike from Derby both incoming Seniors. Both did very well, competeing against upper classman.

Will the results be posted anywhere? Unlike the football players, most of the young ladies going on to run Division I/II participated in the race.
