At the Shrine Bowl (end of 3Q)
July 26, 2008 @ 6:47 p.m. by Joannaby joanna
We’re 20 minutes from game time and I’m getting so excited. Um, yeah. I am looking forward to it, though. It should be good.
I’ll try to update anyone who’s coming to the blog — even though it’s on TV. But I know I have some loyal readers out there who I want to hook up.
(I’m starting to update on the top of the file - -easier for me, easier for you)
End of third quarter: West ends the third period with a sweet hit by Andale’s Matt Fairchild, forcing a fumble at the East 31. West then runs a flea flicker and Cherryholmes hits Mykael Thompson over the middle for the score. Dold then ran for the two-point conversion for the 21-14 lead.
It’s halftime, it’s gone from a 30-minute halftime to a 10-minute halftime. The West leads 13-7. The East’s Edd Noonan had returned a squib kick, after the West took the lead, to the West 47. But Newton’s Jordan Voelker broke up a pass on second down, that play was nullified by a formation penalty. The East quarterback Tyler Bennett was hit by Aaron Racette for a loss of two yards as the half ended.
Here’s the halftime stats — West rushing: Dold 5-14, Cherryholmes 2-14, Horesky 1-13, Braxton 2-9. East rushing: Noonan 8-31, Spradling 7-28, Wilson 6-10, Bennett 0-4. West passing: Cherryholmes 6-9-50, Steven 5-8-104. East passing: McConniff 2-3-64, Bennett 0-2-0. West receiving: Holt 3-24, Thompson 2-32, Ungles 2-23, Braxton 1-43, Kamm 1-9, Wedel 1-10. East receiving: Caylor 1-34, Ginavan 1-30.
Look at these records that Wichita Southeast holds in the Shrine Bowl: — Most rushing yards in a game (Rashad Washington, 1999, 243), longest touchdown run (John Randle, 2003, 96 yards), most receiving touchdowns (Reuben Eckles, 1980, 2) Most PATs (B. Hopper, 1981 tied at 5).

Ugh, there’s rain and lightning out there. Please go around us. Please don’t delay the game.
First quarter ends and it’s 0-0. West did make a really nice play, though, on an untimed play at the end of the period. Girard quarterback Tyler Bennett was running the ball when Southeast’s DeAndre Howard knocked the ball out of his hands, catches it in midair and races 34 yards to the East 22. Nice. Very nice.
Cole Cherryholmes started the game, Brett Steven had a few plays.
All right, as I noted in the comments, we have a lightning delay. It started at 7:43, moments after Kapaun’s Anthony Cantele made the extra point to give the West a 7-0 lead.
The East had forced Logan Dold to fumble at the 2 but then had to punt, setting the West up at the East 43. Brett Steven needed just one play, hitting Andrew Braxton over the middle for the 43-yard pass play.
Updated — it was just announced that the status of the game will be reassessed at 8:15 p.m. Their words, not mine.
So, what are you folks up to tonight? I’m a little shaky from Mountain Dew, I’m freezing from the AC… OK, that’s all I’ve got. Topics anyone?
Updated again: I’ve heard 15 minutes before it starts — 8:35 maybe. Me, I think let’s either play this game or cancel it. But that’s me.
Here’s the stats — West rushing: Cherryholmes 2-14, Dold 3-10, Steven 1-3. East rushing: Noonan 4-19, Spradling 4-14, Bennett 2-5, Wilson 3-4. West passing: Cherryholmes 5-6-40, Steven 2-3-47. East passing: McConniff 1-2-30, Bennett 0-2. West receiving: Ungles 2-23, Holt 2-9, Braxton 1-43, Kamm 1-9, Thompson 1-3. East receiving: Ginavan 1-30.
This just in: Wow, beautiful rainbow right now. It’s huge. I can’t even remember the last time I’ve seen a rainbow.
Players will return at 8:30 and action will begin at 8:45. I just heard that.
Game’s on: The game restarted at 8:37 and it looks like the halftime is going to be cut down from 30 minutes to just the bad. They’re even talking about a running clock in the fourth quarter because of TV.

I’m in Pittsburg Kansas and the network broadcasting the game is having technical difficulties and isn’t airing the game!! :’( I have it on the radio, but it’s not the same. I’m also looking at the radar, and it doesn’t seem like the game is going to last long.

I guess the TV people are having technical difficulties. I’ll try to hook you up.
Dold just fumbled on the East 2 with 10:23 to go in the first half.

Lightning delay at 7:34 p.m. with the West leading at 7-0 following Bishop Carroll’s Brett Steven’s 43-yard pass play to Salina Central’s Andrew Braxton. One play, 7 seconds.
It’s on TV now, it seems. And then it gets delayed. Noooo!

I just checked weather.com and the radar for emporia. The storm is breaking up as it reaches Emporia…so far. So, there’s storms on both sides of the city, as well as to the NW of the city. Someone’s looking out for them so far!

I still haven’t seen a replay of the roughing the quarterback…was it an easy call, or was it close?

From what everyone said, it was roughing the quarterback. I didn’t see it. I was on the field and too far away from the action.
By the way, the hit of the night was Andale’s Matt Fairchild on Edd Noonan. Took Fairchild’s helmet off.
And Ungles finishes his high school career in impressive fashion.
