MAYB national tournament this weekend
July 30, 2008 @ 3:41 p.m. by Joannaby joanna
I was going to wait until tomorrow for a post on this, but I had a request, so here it is.
Will your team play in this tournament? Will you watch the tournament? Which teams are the best? Which Wichita area teams at which grades will be the best? Does it hurt that the tournament won’t have someone like Perry Ellis there (he’s playing in Orlando this weekend)?

Perry Ellis, Perry Ellis, Perry Ellis….I’m sick of everyone ordaining this kid as the next Patrick Ewing. He has not even played a minute of HS ball and you would think he is already going to be 1st team all state. Enough already!

Well, I don’t know about the next Patrick Ewing, but when was the last time that Wichita had a kid who was this highly regarded nationally this early? Korleone back in the 1990s?
Definitely there are other talented athletes out there — feel free to let us know who you want to watch during the tournament — but fact is that Wichita should embrace the fact that it’s got a nationally recognized athlete.
As for him being All-State. I would doubt it. He’s only going to be a freshman and, you’re right, he hasn’t played any high school ball. But seeing this kid play, I think it’s understandable why he gets such attention. My goodness, the potential is there.
But no, he’s not God. But at least Wichita gets some attention, know what I mean?

How are the facilities at Heights? I can’t wait for scouts to come to Wichita and see our state of the art schools and facilities. I hope that boy can find the weight room pretty soon…and a buffet.

Joanna, No it will not hurt the tourney if a Perry Ellis does not play. I can name 15-20 prominent city league kids who will be playing who deserve as much attention. The thing people don’t understand is this. The people around Perry have created such a frenzy that if he plays in a Mayb and bombs, its not good for his “image”. Better yet the image they have created for him.

MAYB was not created for players such as Perry anyway. It was created so players could meerly play the game and have fun at it. Most of them seem to enjoy it. Some of these teams really get blown out, but thats ok because they are having fun playing with their friends for pleasure. If a player wants to play serious, play AAU, not MAYB, and no, I won’t be attending any of these games. Summer time is for baseball and softball.

Ok, sportsfan 22, the fact that PE is an honor student and notable NATIONAL player that performs well on a NATIONAL level is because of the people who surround him??? So you are saying it is a bad thing to have people around you that build you up POSITIVELY!!!! Sounds like sprtsfan22 needs a dose of positivity - you seem to be very consistent in your negative blog comments! Wow… the “Pizza Delivery Guy!”

Why did KSHSAA decide to wait until Aug. 18th to let teams start practicing?

I’m going to the games in Andover for the 9/10th grade team that Perry would’ve played on. They are bringing some good talent from KC area to help out the team and should do well. They just got back from Vegas though and have been playing basketball for a week or two.

I will attend some of the 8th grade games. Who are the local teams to look at in that age group? if anyone can tell me some I would like to check them out. I know the Hoyas not playing in it for whatever reason so I would like to see some of the other teams from that age group. Thanks. Also will want to go watch some of the 9th/10th grade teams (T-Wolves for one).

Opportunity Knocks should stay home. It obviously doesn’t sound like he knows much by saying that MAYB is just for fun. It’s funny how Perry grew up on MAYB but now all of a sudden he’s getting the attention and people such as “OPPORTUNITY” bad mouth MAYB. I’m sure all those teams from out of state that will be here will take exception to him saying “It’s just for fun”. They are not planning on travelling hundreds of miles “just for fun”. Furthermore, Perry is good but the only reason he gets all the hype is because he’s got the height, but I can assure you that there are overall better players here. Opportunity…Enjoy the Wingnuts game or whatever softball game you plan on attending.

This is the year that all activities shift one week later. Everything starts a week later. The only thing that the KSHSAA requires is that the coach that will be their coach in the coming year not coach that team. Many schools have the girls coach, coach the boys and same for the girls teams. That is the way it is supposed to work.

Believe me, Perry’s attention didn’t come from playing MAYB.
Fun, and straight from the horses mouth “Our main goal is practice and participation”
Practice and participation, not winning at all costs.

Variety is the spice of life. Perry and his team has succeeded at all levels in a variety of tournaments. He does participate in MAYB and has for years and will continue. If placing in the top four (including some 1st, 2nds, 3rds, and 4ths is a flop, I bet UCLA and North Carolina were happy to make it to the final four and disappointed to not be in the final game — Memphis was excited to be in the championship game, and devastated to lose in the final game, but realistically speaking, was that considered a flop of a season!?!?!?! We are all human, including sprtsfn22, if Perry and his team flops in a tournament or two, so what?!?!? The part of being a champion is losing! Learning from mistakes and being challenged is what makes a champion. Winning everything teaches you nothing. But at the end of the day, his faith, his hard work and the support of others whom you say has created a frenzy will be the true determiner of what his image is!

WAKE UP Opportunity knocks…Listen to what we’re saying. PERRY DID NOT START IN AAU…DID PERRY NOT PLAY MAYB? Could this have possiblly been a stepping stone for the present? Hmmm, let me be 6′8 and be associated with some sharks and see if I don’t get noticed. Don’t down play MAYB, there are plent of kids that are worthy, matter of fact there are a few that I know of that I would put my money on to outplay and BEAT Perry. Don’t get me wrong, nothing against Perry, I think he’s a great player and God has blessed him with the height to give him an advantage over others but to say that MAYB had nothing to do with the attention is insane. Everything we do leads to the roads we end up in. Last thing I must ask is, “Are you related to him or do you have some sort of vested interest in him?

No one cares that Perry is not playing here this weekend. Even if he was HIS team would get beat. There is alot of talent on some of these teams that are participating in the nationals. Opportunity, shouldn’t you be at a softball game?

Four posts, and you still didn’t answer the question. MAYB is intermural basketball compared to AAU.

I know several “Mayb” teams who have big wins over prominent “aau” teams. In a four game stretch the Wichita T-Wolves beat the Oklahoma/Compton Magic , followed by a win over the Georgia Stars (the so-called best team in Georgia), followed by a win over the Jackson, Miss. Tigers with 3 division 1 recruits. The fourth game was a platinum bracket final loss to Nike Team Florida who were well rested . Don’t get caught up in the aau hype. A lot of programs have left aau over the past 2 years.

In most Mayb tournaments, when you get to the semis those teams are good. I would take the top “Mayb” teams in each grade level and put them in any aau tourney and would be confident in the outcome. Wichita Bulls, Kansas Hoyas, Wichita T-Wolves, That 4th/5th grade KS players team are no joke.
