Crazy Enough to Actually Work?

A-11 Offense.

Some people call it revolutionary. Others, mostly football purists, scoff at it. However, I think the coaches at Piedmont High School are on to something.

This is the A-11(All Eleven Players Potentially Eligible) Offense. The base formation shown below illustrates the use of two quarterbacks three receivers on both sides and two tight ends around the center.

Every player wears an eligible receiver jersey 1-49 or 80-99. The rule is that only five players can go down-field, but with everyone being eligible before the snap, this can lead to a lot of confusion for a defense.

I personally love it. Its like a video game offensive scheme come to life. Talk about ultimate dual QB system. Imagine if Florida had used this set with Chris Leak and Tim Tebow. You’d have to guard against Leak getting the snap and going deep. But also defend Tebow getting the snap and either running or passing it. Plus it spreads the field so you can still run the ball.

Here’s some video of it in being used in an actual game.

The QB does make a couple of bad throws, but look at the options. There are tons of them and if the signal caller makes the right read it’s big play chances on everywhere.

So what do you think? I understand that this is a run oriented state, but do you think that somebody might catch on and actually try this?

I like it, if you had a good enough OC to think of some routes that would give the D problems in a regular set, it would be terrific. There was one I saw where they just did a swing pass to the second QB and he had 20 yards of daylight. I think this concept will catch at a college somewhere next season, you can quote me.

It’d definately be a tough week for a D-coordinator to prepare for. If your defense primarily runs man to man you’ll be in trouble against this, because you won’t know who the eligible receivers are until right before the snap. As long as one of the 2 “quarterbacks” is 7 yards back it’s legal, but they still have to have 7 guys on the line of scrimmage at the snap and only the two guys the closest to the sideline would be eligible just like any formation.

You have to play zone coverage against it.

you could play man, use a quarter packege and have your d-ends run man on the tight ends, and your free saftey could be in a spy the whole game. and your Strong could run man on the QB that doesnt get the snap. and if you dont want a rush at all you could have a backer just roamin the whole time

To me, it kind of limits the offense. You know they are not going to be running the ball. So, if the defense just keeps everyone in front of them, it should be easy to stop. Plus if you are sending 4 guys every down, the qb is going to have to get rid of the ball in a hurry or he is going to get nailed. I don’t think it would be successful at the high school level because most schools do not have enough skill-position players to pull it off. It is interesting, but I don’t think it’s a long term solution.

So you are basically running a fake punt every play here.

It’s using the space to create plays. Sometimes the space works against the offense, especially when the defense gambes and guesses right. I guess that’s the intent of the scheme: to get the defense to guessing and gambling. Pretty interesting!

spauly: any more, it seems like prep teams have more skill players than beefy linemen. I think it would work, especially at the smaller class schools that have a bunch of 150 to 160 pounds kids. Just put your best athlete at QB and go with it.

This is a topic of conversation for some and id welcome any team that im not involved with to feel free to try it. These gimick offenses come and go and this one is no different and really is nothing more than keeping us busy until the season starts. Spread the field,Pro Style,Triple opition whatever Player have to make plays is what it always come down to and my guess is this offense would lead to more turnovers in the long run. Lets not try to reinvent the wheel here people.
