Can’t go to the game, KCTU’s got you covered

July 31, 2008 @ 3:05 p.m. by jlong

Here’s the tentative schedule of live high school broadcasts on KCTU, Local 5.

Friday Sept 5: Northwest at Kapaun-Mt. Carmel

Thursday, Sept. 11: North vs. West

Friday, Sept. 12: Dodge City at East

Friday, Sept. 19: Bishop Carroll at South;

Friday, Sept. 26: Bishop Carroll vs. North

Friday, Oct. 3: Northwest vs. Southeast

Friday, Oct. 10: Heights at South

Friday, Oct. 17: Derby vs. Southeast

Friday, Oct. 24: Campus at South

Friday, Oct. 31: Southeast vs. East

Any games jump out at you?

The biggest thing that jumps out to me is that they aren’t going to show Carroll at Heights, the first game of the season, Thursday September 4. This is a TENTATIVE schedule so I’m hoping that something clicks in the head of a decision maker over there and they add this game.

Not only is this the first game of the season, but it’s a marquee match-up. Both these teams should contend for a City League title and beside maybe NW vs. Kapaun I don’t see another game on the list that’s a better match-up.

But that’s just me going by what I’ve heard from others as far as who should be good this year and who won’t.

So let me know what you think of the schedule. What games should be added? What games have no business on T.V. whatsoever?

Northwest Vs Kapun is a good opener. Give people a chance to see how a very young NW team will fare this year against a always well coached Kapun team.

If this were Heights at Carroll, it would be a no-brainer.
There’s one problem with doing a live broadcast from Heights… a patch of oil drums just south of K-96 that completely damper our digital microwave truck.
If Heights were to put internet access in at their stadium, we might consider it, if there is time (and sufficient sponsorships to cover two nights).
The other consideration is that we are obligated to do at least one game of every City League school… which is why while some of these games “don’t jump out at you”, we have parents and grandparents who buy DVDs, sponsors who traditionally buy games with certain high schools, and viewers all over the world who are alums of the various schools who watch the live streams of the games on the internet.

Considering Kapaun will only be televised once and most other teams are on the listing twice, you should leave the schedule how it is. Trust me Bishop Carroll never has trouble with newspaper or tv coverage.

October 31st (Holloween) - The best two running backs in the state. There will be some records broken that night. If you like offense, this is going to be the game of the year.

why don’t they show some avctl games

  9. mrcontroversy says:

John, the reason we aren’t doing more AVCTL games is that we can’t get them rebroadcasted on the USD 259 cable channel. Since Cox wants $70,000 to put us on cable (and won’t charge anyone else), this is a major consideration.
The landscape will change in the next year with the entry of AT&T U-Verse in Wichita. We’d like to go to two nights of football in 2009, with a CL game on Thursday and a non-CL game on Friday.

Sounds like we might be moving foward around here in 2009 !
