Best sports movies

Aug. 8, 2008 @ 9:23 p.m. by Joanna

by joanna

My husband just took the kiddos to Blockbuster or something and got three kids sports movies, three of the best of all time — Space Jam, Little Giants and Love Bug (the original).

Does it get much better than that for kids? They’re already fans of Field of Dreams and  The Natural (loving with the ball starts unraveling).

So what are your top movies — adult sports movies? Kids sports movies?

My faves definitely include Field of Dreams and Hoosiers and Bull Durham. I love The Rookie, too.

Can’t forget the original Longest Yard. Glory Road has to be in the mix as does Remember the Titans. Major League & Cadyshack are good for some laughs. Finally, a real blast from the past: Slapshot.

Nice, Finicky. I love Remember the Titans. And when I was on maternity leave last winter, I bet I watched Glory Road about 10 times, all in the middle of the night. Love that movie.

number 3 should be Glory Road. At least this is my order. Another good one is Without Limits about prefontaine and of course Miracle should probably be somewhere in the top 10. Almost all sports movies are great except a few like Major League 2 or Caddy Shack 2.

Totally forgot about the Natural. Great movie although it gets a little slow in the middle. When he hits that last homer gives me chills. Eight men out was not too bad, good for those who don’t know much about the the first guys to be kicked out of baseball for gambling.

The best sports movie is “North Dallas Forty” second might be “Friday Night Lights.” These movies really tell what sports are all about.

Hoosiers — even though I’ve seen it dozens of times, it gets me every time.

  11. Joanna says:

icatero, haven’t seen you in a while. What’s up with that?

What I love about sports movies is they can alternately make you laugh, cheer and cry.
I still remember watching Rocky IV in the theater and cheering when he beat the damn Russian. Ha! And this morning, as I watched the end of Little Giants with the kids, I teared up. It gets me every time.

So let’s take this to another level and see how some of you men are — are you from the 2000s or the dark ages? What movie makes you cry? Maybe tear up just a little? (Sports movies, unless you want to take it in another direction, which is fine.)
Hoosiers always gets me a little, Field of Dreams, too, even though I know the line that his dad says about having a catch is cheesy. I don’t care.

I haven’t seen Youngblood in forever. I adore Major League — Wesley Snipes is hilarious. I was so disappointed when he wasn’t in the second one…. and I was so disappointed in that movie.
    Hoopdreams was great.
My son has the entire Rocky collection, asked for it for his birthday — All of them are good. He also bought the Karate Kid movies. I had no idea there was a movie before the Hilary Swank one. It was baaad.

  14. lunchpail says:

Gotta say Rocky, Glory Road, Remember the Titans. Friday Night Lights was good but not as good as the book. Junction Boys could have been good if they had stay truer to the book as well. Hated Any Given Sunday the first time I watched it, but love it now.

Can’t beat Caddyshack and Major League for laughs though.

  15. jackporter says:

Not much of a sports movies fan. The best ones seem to be those based on books though. Friday Night Lights is my favorite sports book made into a movie, although much of the issues in the book were left out, and the side stories were alltogether omitted. It was still a worthy film though.

  16. jackporter says:

and yes, Friday Night Lights makes me feel like tearing up a bit at the end.

  17. billmangino says:

Miracle, there are several parts that can make you tear up but when the kid says he plays for USA after they have been doing suicides on the ice is my favorite. Remember the titan when Gary gets in the car wreck is pretty sad. I do sometimes tear up when I see Bill Murray in that wife beater on caddy shack too.

Joanna — Not to worry — I’ve been reading the blog regularly. I enjoy it tremendously because it gives me so much information about kids and sports and events that I might not read about in the Eagle. I also learn a lot from some of your regular contributors who are extremely knowledgeable and informative. And I love hearing about your family. Keep up the good work!

When I was younger, it was Brians Song. And in the Natural when Roy is talking to Coach. Coach says “I should have stuck to farming, thats like my dad wanted me to” Roy says “my dad wanted me to be a baseball player” then coach tells him “Your the best one I ever had, Best damn hitter I ever saw”. (dont remember excatly but i think thats close to what was said) and the field of dreams catch with dad at the end is cool also.

Just like I notice that Panther 44 came on in track and football season and jackporter has suddenly cropped up pretty frequently.

The movie for the track and field guys - Chariots of Fire. When the Eric Liddell says “I believe God made me for a purpose - for China - but when I run I feel his pleasure” with the music, always leaves me with a lump in my throat.

I also liked the Tom Cruise movie All the Right Moves.

“Bull Durham” and “Caddyshack” are my faves. I was thinking
about “A League of Their Own”, which I enjoyed as well - certainly
a different sports movie. The original “The Longest Yard” was also
really good. Another movie with a sports setting that I liked was
“Against All Odds”, thought it’s more of a love story than a football
movie. Great title song by Phil Collins, too.

Sandlot is a great movie for kids & adults. Sandlot II was terrible, Sandlot III is somewhere in between. The Rookie is another good baseball movie. It gave me chills when he came in the game his first game.
Vision Quest is a pretty realistic view into the life of a wrestler.
Best of the Best is a pretty good martial arts movie….Acting is not that great but action scenes are good (I think Julia Robert’s brother is in it).
Jean Claud Van Dam’s Blood Sport is awesome as well.
We are Marshall is a pretty good football movie. There’s a fairly new one called The Last Season (?) that was decent.
Necassary Roughness & Wildcats were pretty funny.

Ooo, my boys have all the Sandlot movies, although we had to cut down how often they watched them because we heard a lot of the trash talking repeated, such as You drink potty water.
Mighty Ducks is one of those movies that we’ll watch whenever it’s on TV.

  33. Jason says:

A great movie that has not been mentioned yet is 61*. The great thing about that movie is that Billy Crystal, a lifelong Yankee fan, made sure that the movie was as close to accurate as possible. Mickey Mantle was his idol, so he was not going to dishonor him by creating a false account of that 1961 season. The potrayl of Roger Maris is great as well. Every time I watch it, even though I know the story, I always hope that Roger can hit #61 before the deadline to quiet the New York media and other critics.

What’s the football movie based a true story….Philly Eagles held public tryouts, Dick Vermiel’s first year as head coach, that Marky Mark guy is the lead actor that makes the team? Good movie…what ever it was.

Cannot believe RADIO has not been mentioned. While it may have less to do with athletisism than the storyline of the main character, it certainly reflects on character building in relation to sports. I love that movie so much that when our home copy of the movie “disappeared”, my son got me another at Christmas. Now, of course, it’s doubly treasured by me.

I agree with pheasanthunter, White Men Cant Jump would be on my list too. And as far as comedies go how bout Dodgeball and Talladega Nights? I also LOVE Extreme Days but that is a lesser known movie and its about extreme sports not team sports so it probably doesnt have such a fan base

For the “tear up”, the scene where Boobie Miules walks out of the lockerroom and gets into his uncles car, realizing he has nothing left of his dream, is a tough one.
