The inside scoop on Kansas high school sports.

School starts, less than a week until fall sports practice

It was a rather exciting morning in my house — my stepdaughter went off to middle school and my son went off to kindergarten. Unbelievable.

There were no tears shed by anyone in the Chadwick family, although I might have seen some tears in the kindergarten teacher who has 24 kids. I hope she gets paid lots of money (although I know that’s not the case). We lugged all the school supplies we had to buy, then turned around and my boy has the first day of treats that we have to buy, and then there’s some googley eyes that we have to get, too.

Did you send anyone off to school today? Did you cry tears of joy or sadness? Did you go off to school today or yesterday? Tell us all about it.

Now onto sports.

There’s just a few more days until fall sports begin practicing. J. Long will have a story on Sunday heading into the beginning of practice, I’ll have one on Tuesday after the start of practice.

I haven’t seen the forecast for next week, but I guarantee you that there are plenty of coaches hoping that this weather will continue. Yes, it’s rainy. But it’s so cool!

I’ve been going through all the surveys that coaches have sent in. A couple things I saw yesterday: Meade is playing an Appleton City, Mo. team. I did a mapquest on that and it’s 389.6 miles ONE WAY from Meade to Appleton. Oh. My. God. (Meade is close to Liberal). The coach wrote on his sheet that it’s hard to find teams in Southwest Kansas. Meade’s first game of the year is against Beaver, Oklahoma. That, at least, is 40 miles one way.

I was checking out the Caldwell football schedule, and its first four games are against teams it didn’t play against last year. Most teams have just one or two games against new opponents.

Any thoughts as we get closer to practice beginning?

One began the Last Year at Derby High……the other Junior year at Washburn, time definitely disapates fast, like a vapor. Make moments Joanna…..moments you and your children will remember. You definitely want to look back and say to your children “Remember When”!

Bluestem against Trinity opening nite! Do you think Bluestem’s losing streak will continue…..relatives of mine played there before, during the losing streak. Personally Trinity will probably win their first game of 11 man football and the losing streak will continue for the Lions of Bluestem. The streak is so long, all the kids know is their own history of losing.

One other thing…..Soccer & Cross Country student / athletes will also be in the same heat, rain, humidity as those on the Gridiron………hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!!!! stay safe!

Yesterday I sent my only off to his last year of High School & I will take off work to watch their first day of practice in full pads. I was fortunate enough to get to go to their camp at Fort Hays this year, memories my son, wife & I will always have. I agree with PanFan, Joanna, make memories now & document them anyway possible.

I’m always curious how my random family comments will be taken on this blog. Will the readers ignore them because they only care about the hard-core sports info or are some of them softies?
Sounds like we have some softies in here. I like it.

Oh, I forgot to say to N2Sports that it’s pretty cool that you’re taking off to watch the first day of practice with pads on. Unless, of course, you’re going there to whine about playing time! Kidding. Kidding.

Joanna, Believe one of the things your bloggers truly enjoy is the balance between hard-core discussion of sports and the softer, real-life side of the same. Behind every athlete is a family of some sort. They may be the family that provides food, shelter and care or the family of coaches, the family of team or the family of fans. All play their part. It’s a great mix. Keep it comin’!

Enjoy them while they are young. It seems the older you get faster time goes. Remember whens are always good conversation pieces in our family. To be honest, some weren’t always so good. LOL. But for the most part, we have had some great laughs. I was excited to send my 4 kids to NWHS on Thursday. I have been waiting for that day since…the 1st day of summer. Enjoy them. I hope my kids do not read this, but I will miss them when they are gone.
