Fall practice starts Monday

OK, this is my day off, but I’m here, at 8 p.m. Friday putting something up on the blog. What have you people done to me! I’m addicted to this thing. Sadly, I’ve been thinking about it today, but I held off until now. But now, after getting back from the pool (inside, thank you!), I just had to log on.

So here’s my question to you: With fall practice starting, what sport do you care about most? Why? Which team do you care about most? Why?

For me, I’m most interested in football because I love covering football games. I love volleyball, too, and I’m looking forward to covering some of the area teams. I never seem to see everyone as much as I want to.

I’m excited about seeing the City League’s top three football teams — Heights, Northwest and Carroll. In volleyball, I always love watching Kapaun and Carroll (first match of the season). But I love checking out Circle — that program is always well-coached — and I’m interested in watching Valley Center even more this year (this program has been solid for years, but Bryan Otte brings an new, interesting aspect to the program.)

So tell me all about yours.

Finally, football has arrived. It has taken forever to get here. I am looking foward to watching Northwest. The reason is very easy. My son and step-son will be in action. As I am very intense when they play, we just have 2 years to enjoy it. Looking foward to it. Joanna, I understand when you say that your addicted to it. It is the highlight of my day. Keep it coming.

Football and Cheerleading too ( daughter is a Varsity cheerleader)
Northwest High and I too have a son on the team. After 23 years of coaching I have taken a 1 year break to watch my son play is Senior year and be there for him.I know all us coaches sometimes get a bad rap on here ,cause we are coaching so our kids can play but I was going 1 year after High School and 5 years before my son was born. The truth is I coached 23 years for other peoples kids.A coach is either to soft on his son or to hard,I was the later(hard).Always there for everyone else didn’t show special attention to him cause then everyone thought he got special treatment but instead I deprived him of a dad at Football games. This year thougha PROUD DAD will be there and can’t wait.

The topic makes me wonder whether it would make sense to allow practice to start a week earlier, now that just about all schools begin classes by mid-August. When many schools started in late August, it was reasonable to wait until the third week of August for practice to begin, due to student jobs and travel, but since the kids need to be here anyway earlier, why not get the practices started?

True, it will likely be hot out, but that’s why safeguards are in effect, and in some cases it might enable more early practices to be held in the early morning hours when it is cooler out. Golfers, tennis and soccer players normally are used to being outdoors practicing and competing in the summer in the hot weather anyway; and many cross country athletes run on their own through the summer.

Certainly for tennis and golf, getting an earlier start to the season could really help with the weather; soccer, volleyball and cross country could spread out their events more or add an extra competition or two; and, yes, football could add an extra game. It does seem odd not to be able to have a football game until the fourth Friday of the school year.

    What do others think?

it seems like they just keep starting school earlier every year and i hate it. i want my kids to learn and play sports but after that it seems there is only time for them to eat and sleep. i have a senior football player and i hate to think that he will soon be gone. it seems like only a short time ago that i was taking him to his first f.b. practice when he was a first grader.after i watched his first practice i was so proud of him and i have never stopped.he is an awesome son and a great football player.ihad the pleasure of coaching him for 7 yrs and those are the best yrs of my life.other than him i also had the pleasure of coaching many other wonderful boys who have gone on to great h.s. careers.

I didn’t know high school football ever ended. I mean with the spring conditioning, summer weights, 7 on 7, team camps. I will be excited when the games start, like Iverson said Monday is just “practice, not the game”.
