What preview are you looking forward to seeing?

Aug. 25, 2008 @ 12:40 p.m. by Joanna

We’ve already had five football previews in the paper — today we had Rose Hill and Kapaun, Sunday we had Derby, Circle and El Dorado. Who were you or are you excited to see?

And I know that there are multiple storylines with every program, what have we missed with the previews we’ve run or what is a can’t-miss story with a program.

By the way, this doesn’t have to be just football, either. Feel free to tell us which team you’re dying to see in which sport — and you know how I am — give me a why you are dying to see this team or individual.

I’m especially looking forward to our next two features, which are Bryce Brown on Wednesday by Jonathan Long. I’ll have a Jaydan Bird feature on Sunday.

Let me hear from you. (P.S. I’m giving you all a great chance to pump up your kid or favorite. Don’t let me down.)

I have a hard time pumping up my own kid, so let’s just say keep an eye on Goddard’s offensive backfeild. They all have decent size & 4.4 speed. They all have a sense of pride for the others & do a great job of blocking for each other. They are team players in a system & don’t need to be on the cover or talked about in magazines & newspapers.
I doubt if any of them have a 1000 yard season but collectively they are going to make some noise.

  2. The Lion's Roar says:

Goddard will have a tough time losing 6 offensive lineman, their top 2 rushers, and all their receivers with starting experience from last year. I’m anxious to see that preview. And who will take over for Watkins.

I cant wait for the XC on Sept. 5th to come out and see what it says about some of the local talent.

I agree with ‘OH YEA’ XC is what I’m wait for.

  6. Joanna says:

OK, G, but you still haven’t given me your ‘why.’ I wanna know — why cross country? Are there teams, talented athletes you want not know about?
Salthawks1, same for you. Why that game?
    I want more!

  7. OH YEA says:

There are a couple of area kids who could be the state champ this year. Even alot more that could run division 1.

    Joanna-

I’m not Salthawks1, but I think that this game could be a really nice preview for you. I think you’re a Mizzou grad, so maybe this won’t be as big of a deal, but I think there’s something interesting about the defending 6A state champions taking on one another for state bragging rights. Obviously, here in central Kansas, the “border war” might not carry as much significance, but I think there’s something to take from it.

Also, in a way, this game pits a team that produces a bunch of division 1 players year-in, year-out (Rockhurst), with just a solid Blue Collar program like Hutch that relies on it’s team concept and depth to defeat teams with more talent on paper.

There’s also the whole Kansas football isn’t any good angle, and if Hutch is able to knock off a Rockhurst team being considered as a candidate to be one of the best they’ve had, I think it validates Kansas football in relation to some of the bordering states that are typically considered better football states.

Hutch has a 36 game winning streak on the line that I know they want to keep going really bad.

Hutch has won 24 straight road/neutral site games in a row.

    I think it’s a big deal that would be a nice story/preview.

I look forward to the Eagle’s preview of area soccer teams. I think it’s on Friday just ahead of the Titan Classic kicking off on Monday. For those that want enjoy high school athletics in a great atmosphere you should experience this tournament held each year at South High. Two matches are being played around the clock with grilled food at the concession stand, feels like fall baby.

I was looking forward to KMC but after I read the doom and gloom makes you wonder what the coach is talking about. I know several kids on that team who played in the city league and are very good players I don’t think the coach knows hoe good of players he really has.

How small is the rest of Kapaun’s line. I’ve heard in multiple publications the Kapaun coach complaining about a lack of size.

N2Sports— i guarantee u that not all of goddards backfield has 4.4 speed.i bet that not 1 of them has.who timed them ,there dad? very few players are a legit 4.4. most people dont even realize how fast that is.but if ALL of your backfield does indeed have 4.4 speed then i feel sorry for the teams u play.

Will be interested to hear why Jayden Bird left Andover Central. Did he elaborate on that Joanna?

  14. G says:

    Joanna,

There is a lot of talented runners in Kansas that get overlooked because there isn’t a lot of interest in XC. I predict that the Mulvane boys will win every meet they go to this year, including state. I also think that Belle Plaine girls will win 3a state. Trinity girls will challenge BP this year though, and Trinity boys always have a good team. Clearwater girls will be good and also Kapaun and Bishop Carroll guys will have a good team.

  15. OH YEA says:

G, I think the first meet that Mulvane runs in will be tough for them to win. The team from Campus will be there. It will be a good race to watch.

  16. N2Sports says:

Coach, since none of the backs were timed with a laser, I’ll agree with you. My point is, all of them all extremely fast & play well in the system. No superstars, good solid players that are more concerned about wins than personal glory. They actually block for each other and celebrate the others success.
If you are hitting 4.4 on a stopwatch, your fast anyway you look at it.

Joanna–great stuff. Keep up the good reviews. I am especially looking forward to the Friday edition covering NW. I think they are the team to be in the next two years (returning line on both sides, and Robinson is impressive (4.3 in the 40 as a soph). I also look forward to the soccer preview!

Garden Plain. Oh wait, its classified under “other area teams.” So nice of the Eagle to care about the truly good teams.

  19. Joanna says:

OwlProwler09, are you really feeling like we’re dogging Garden Plain by calling you an “other area team?” That designation is based on where most of our circulation goes.
If you think that Garden Plain gets left out because it’s classified as such, let me tell you differently. I did a search in our in-house archives and found that by typing in Logan Dold and Garden Plain for 2007, in less than two months, there were 67 mentions.
That’s caring about the truly good teams.
Conway Springs shares the same designation, still gets love.

  20. Joanna says:

Oh! I forgot to write that we don’t only write about the good teams. We write about all our area teams. Even when Garden Plain wasn’t a very good team, we still wrote about them.

I hope you are right about the Goddrd kids. They need to keep up the legacy that last years class left. They are only lacking in experience but the heart is there. Last years class was probably the best Goddard has ever seen which will be hard for them to live up to but i am glad to hear that they are determined to do it. It’s not a bad problem to have at all in a 6A program

Steve, Steve, Steve, did you read my above comments? Please, let’s not have a chip on your shoulder. Garden Plain gets love, plenty of it. Again, check out my above comments.
Garden Plain’s preview will be in Sunday’s paper. Please do not be upset or compare length of previews — Garden Plain will be paid attention to plenty this season. Good teams always are.

When was Garden Plain “not a good team?” I dont believe Varsity Kansas was around then, could be wrong. Sure they weren’t so good back a few years ago. But 2 titles in 1 district last year, and where’s that? Oh and 28th in the nation….
