Which team should be hyped more this year?

I was thinking about this because of the number of times I’ve written about Hutchinson so far. I’m not about to ignore the best team in the state, but it got me thinking about who deserves more hype.
I think the teams that get love on the blog by myself and you readers are Hutchinson, East, Andale and Garden Plain. Does Carroll need more? What about Northwest? How about Derby (although there’s a pretty strong contingent here)? Goddard? Andover Central?
Let me here it. By the way, feel free to let us all know why a team needs to be talked about more.

I think NW, Carroll, and Heights need pub. I know there are people that will disagree and say the directional Wichita schools could use some also, but I dont want to read about them.
NW and Heights have the most returners in a tight city league race, but yet East gets all the press. I understand Brown, but come on. I want to see more about this trio Schartz keeps talking about in the backfield.
I also hear that Heights has changed their offensive scheme, and that South’s top rusher has transfered there.

I think after the 3rd week we will all know who should get the Pub.
Alot of great games right off the bat.Hutch has a big one and couple in City League then Goddard has a couple early tests.New Football season like blind date,never know how good it’s gonna be till you get there.

I think the Eagle and News stations should get their Checkbooks out this time of the year and get these Kansas kids some recognition. There is very little info out there about Kansas football. You go to SouthEast Texas on the Internet and Team/Indivdual information is all over the place. And people wonder why Texas kids get more recognition. I wonder why??? You get what you pay for and our Kansas High School Football players are not getting the publicity they deserve. Regardless of the School. Its a given Wichita News Stations and the Eagle are going to cover the City Schools over the suburbs no matter how good or bad they are. OH unless your a Garden Plain Fan you get more hype than Andale!! I’m outta here , PEACE.

All teams in your coverage area should be “hyped” the same.
And by “hyped” I mean “covered.” The Eagle isn’t in a PR department. But maybe the blog isn’t considered part of the sports department.
Kansas schools also need to help themselves with getting their athletes covered. Put together some decent Web sites, update your rosters and stats, get your schedules posted before the season is half over.

I agree the school web sites are mostly a joke. I guess I don’t get East being hyped so much. But the ones I think you should talk about is the ones that get the most response, whoever that may be. Seems to me that whenever you guys try to talk about one of these little schools or the more obscure sports, noone hardly responds on it. Actually I think you should talk basketball. Laugh all everyone wants but look at some of the basketball posts and alot of times you will see lots of response!

2Quick, Not sure what you mean about our getting our checkbooks out. We don’t pay for information. That would seem to be a problem journalistically.
RikRok, we’re certainly no PR department and we’re still the sports department here on the blog. As for covering everyone the same, that’s just not possible. Except in utopia. We do try, though.
bbfan, I think there is definitely a difference between East and Bryce Brown. I personally haven’t discussed East much. Bryce Brown, yes. He’s one of the best players in the country, so why not?

Let’s wait for a few games and then see who should be hyped up. Right now no one really knows who is going to be good. We can all speculate but after the first couple of weeks we will know who deserves more hype and who should get ready for basketball season. There are some tough early schedules out there and it should help separate the contenders from the pretenders.
Jack, leave south and west alone. Hopefully those coaches are invoking confidence in their programs, that is the first step to success. It is tough in the CL with so much recruiting going on.

Joanna: I mean it’s not your duty to hype athletes. But, if there are five high school football teams in your area, they should get close to equal treatment. Every team has a hundred stories.
Schools can help themselves get more coverage by making information available in a timely manner. Assign some journalism student to handle the team’s PR. It would be a good learning experience.

billmangino, good point on calling out Jack about South and West. At least they’re out there busting their tail and trying to get better. They could be walking the halls laughing at the guys who are at least working hard.
RikRok, we try to be equal, but it’s pretty impossible considering the number of teams in the area. We figure we have 80 schools in the area and 25 in the immediate area. Equality is something to strive for, just very rarely achieved.
And I know that I’ll never make everyone happy.

Joanna: Really, for all I know the Eagle does everything equal. I was speaking in general terms. I know it can’t truly be equal, and bottom line is you have to write the stories the readers want.
I was sticking to the topic title of who should be “hyped.”
Used to read the Eagle every day but suddenly the local library started getting only the Sunday edition.

Why leave South and West alone? Some people make it sound like your talking about handicap kids or something if you talk about those two schools. They have football teams, who have regular kids on them like all the other schools. I would think the two schools would hate everyone talking about them in that kind of manner. Treat em like everyone else for goodness sakes. Nobody says lets leave Northwest, or Carroll alone! Now after having said that and seeing South at it’s scrimage the other night, they may be the worse 6A team EVER. But still, I know some of the kids and they would rather have crap talked about them then be pittied and felt sorry for.

I think you need to hype the local teams whiich Hutch is not one of. They have their own daily paper and get plenty of hype from them. I agree with lets see who deserves to be hyped after week 3. I think there may be some surprises.

lh, I understand your point about Hutch. I really do. Hutch is an area team, not one of the teams we focus on.
But here’s why the Salt Hawks get covered _ in the Eagle. It’s a nationally ranked program. This week the Salt Hawks play Rockhurst, ranked No. 13 by ESPN.
As for the blog, I try to hit lots of different topics, but it’s pretty easy to see the ones that fans like. There’s a lot of readership and comments on Bryce Brown and Hutchinson.

And whomever else wants to see how the media should cover High School Sports. Go to this website and you’ll understand why Texas get the most attention. Their Highschool Football Scoreboard on Friday night last one hour on two differents news stations.(one hour each) And for those who pointed out the High School Web Sites I agree most of the Schools Websites are a joke. I don’t think that most people realize how much more publicised states like Louisiana, Texas , Florida ect… are than Kansas and others. Here is the link to the site. http://www.setxsports.com/
