Soccer fans

This is not just a football site; it’s a site for all high school sports. I know that it might seem like a football/basketball site, but that’s because there’s no doubt that there are more comments coming on football.
Did you check out Friday’s soccer previews? Jonathan Long had City League soccer notes, area soccer notes, a story on McPherson soccer, and a story on Kapaun. We also had a story today on Goddard girls tennis, and Carroll girls tennis.
But this is for soccer fans. I didn’t grow up playing the sport, but I knew about 15 years ago that it would be one of my kids’ first sport. My stepdaughter played, and now I have two boys playing. (While one scored a handful of goals this morning, the younger one, in his first try at soccer, wasn’t sure at all that he wanted to be out there. Interesting.)
So which teams will be the teams to watch in soccer? Which athletes will stand out? Which athletes will go on and play at the next level and really do something?
Let’s hear all about them.

Wow - that’s pretty good reasoning. It’s Saturday, and alot of people aren’t even on here reading yet.
Joanna- I think there has been alot of change in the area soccer scene in the past year, perhaps more so than many past seasons. I look for different teams to advance in the area this year. Salina Central might be pretty tough this year, as will Rose Hill. The Titan Classic startinig at 9:00AM on Monday will go a long way towards telling the story of the first part of the season. After that, the teams will regroup and re-evaluate to see what they need to do to improve over the course of the season. The Titan is a nice start to the season.

I can’t wait for the season to start. Salina Central opens with Washburn Rural Tuesday night. The Titan Classic tomorrow will be awesome. I’d love to see Southeast play Liberal. Who will win that one?

As a former area high school player at Derby and a player on last years Friends University team, I would love to see more written about local soccer. We have an amazing crop of talent flowing through our city. Alot of kids move on from the Wichita area to play in college and a pretty good number are at the D1 level right now. The last one I can think of is Kelly Porter from Trinity playing at Costal Carolina. Last year at Friends we were one game from going to the national championship tournament and took the #12 team in the nation into double overtime which we easily should have beaten. We finished our season 17-2-1. This years team is even better with us losing only two people, me and Micha Foquet. A very talented senior class includes five potential All Americans in Kevin Tenyck, Alex Mosely, Andrew Hull, Rusty Shannon and Chris OHearn. I’m coaching the goalkeepers there this year and OHearn is looking very quality. We also have a solid core of sophomores and juniors and a incomming freshman CL star David Dao. The bench is deep is Coach Wilkey is a genius who knows how to work it. This years schedule is filled with top teams including @ Hastings who is a national tournament participant every year.
I would reccommend comming out and checking out a game. Tuesday night opens the season with a feirce rivalry at home vs. Newman university.

Im going to have to say, with my bias opinion, Southeast is the team to watch out for. With Taylor Knoll moving to foward to work with Trent Remmich, expect plenty of goals this season.

As mentioned above, the titan should be a good start to the season,
I expect Kapaun to be solid even though they lost a number of seniors, the team looks good so far,
Is Southeast going to be able to live up to expectations ?
Why did the Heights coach go to North ?

Maize should be one of the dominate teams in the AVCL Div.1 and also in class 6A. Great number of quality club players that if they can play together as a team should do well. Looking forward to the highschool soccer season and all the great soccer action. Keep posting all you can on all the state soccer action!

I know there’s a fan base for soccer. We hear from them frequently. I don’t know if we could ever cover enough soccer for the soccer fans, partly because it’s often compared to football coverage. Just as wrestling fans often feel slighted because they compare coverage to basketball.
But there are definitely soccer fans, and for good reason. It’s an exciting sport.

Southeast started off with a good start to there season with a W against a darn good liberal team. Unfortunately, trent remmich one of the best players in wichita is injured and taylor knoll, another great is out for the next game. look for brian beckman to make a big difference in these next two years along side jordan saybounkham or w/e. new upcomers!

Now that day one of the TITAN Classic is in the books we know that SE is pretty good! Liberal is not as good as it used to be. Garden City was handled pretty easy by the small but effective KMC Crusaders. NW was the only team to post a shut out in beating Manhattan 1-0. Heights was downed by Derby 0-1 in the second overtime. North was missing a good coach and now they have one in former Heights coach Lewis, they are much improved. East will continue to struggle under their first year coach. By the way, why did we not get any article’s about this great tournament? Instead we got a big article about Tom Brady? The chiefs don’t play him for another 5 days? Please give the area soccer players more coverage in your paper. They deserve it and we want to read about it!

Austin steadman, marcos, jared keints, and christian gilmore from derby seemed to be at the top of there game against heights where they won 1-0 in double overtime with a goal from christian gilmore right before the start of pks

ICTSoccerFan -
Just wondering why you said that NW was the only team to post a shutout, then in the very next sentence you show Derby beat Heights 1-0; which technically, was two shutouts in one game (in regulation).
What was the KMC -Garden City score?

Northwest’s shutout wasnt really due to their defense, it was the lack of capitalizing by Manhatten. Aaron Apple cant do everything for them and they just missed opportunities. And the Derby Heights game should have been settled in Pks. Both teams lack the ability to score and need some work on scoring. The liberal Southeast game was the only game where real offense was showed. Both teams built up play and were able to capiltalize. Southeast should take city easy and atleast get back to the final four

Derby has Kapaun next which should be a good game but Derby has a lot of talent in the midfield and up top with Austin Steadman, Jared Keintz, Craig Taylor, Christian Gilmore, Daniel Gough, And marcos so i look for them to pull it out in a pretty close game but derby is going far this year look out for them.

First off lets start with Heights and Derby, Yes Derby won but it was farely a close game. With the Lack of offense heights showed and losing there top defender from last year you cant put out that derby smashed them. And Derbysoccerfan off course you think derbys gonna be great this year because you go there. But honestly you beat a poor heights team in double overtime. Next Theres Northwest and Manhatten. I agree that Arron Appeal cant take a whole team down by himself. But he showed great skill in giving the grizzles a challange. NW had a good showing. They were aggressive and had good play throughout the game. But unlike derby they scored in the very last second. Then theres Garden City and Kaupaun. First off let me mention Garden Citys Uniforms. WTF are they wearing? Kaupaun had a good game. They were small and only had 2 decent players. Polo and the kid up top. Next the best game of the first leg of the titan classic, Liberal vs. Southeast. Libearal (1st in 5a) took it to the buffalos early. But SE hung in there with an impressive win. Taylor knoll and trent remmich both had 2 goals in fantastic style. And the asian kid in the back looked good also. Anyone know his name? To recap the first day i think SE will be tough to beat along side with NW and possibly derby. Well all see happends in the finals.

Maize Smashed on Emporia baby!!! Can anyone Say ownage?
But i agree with SoccerFan89. But why didnt you mention us?
And the asian kid in the back for southeast is Jordan Saybounhan or w.e. Kid plays for The Wizards. Whad u guys think bout maize?

SoccerFan–you are correct in saying that Derby had a shutout.
SoccerFan89–you are sooo right about the GC uniforms!! WTF? That seemed to be the talk of the afternoon.
Jordan Saybounhan of SE is one of the most talented soccer players in the area, playing on one of the most talented club teams in the nation (check final USSF stats for his age division).
Outside the ICT, Maize appears to be the ONLY team worth talking about RIGHT NOW, sorry Derby. I know you think you’ve got a great team, but, it did take you two OT’s to beat a rebuilding Heights team. Look at how Maize is beating teams. The game is over after 10 minutes of play. Derby did lose a very good group of seniors. I agree that your mid’s and fwd’s are play makers, but, your defense looked very vulnerable (except for Nate in Goal).
Good to see all of the blogging activity so early in the season!!! Maybe the Eagle will take notice and start doing a better job of covering the sport! The kids deserve it!

Okay maize soccer here is all im gonna say. Your in the blue bracket and you beat emporia who is not exactly a strong team. If u didnt know , the Blue bracket is also the B bracket. of course your going to woop up on teams. Also im anxious to see the Derby Kapaun game on thursday, should be interesting. Both teams lack offense but both have a sense of discpline. And i agree with whoever said Derby is weak on defense because without Nate, you would be lost. THe NW Southeast game should be the most interesting though soley because Knoll is out. If NW is smart they will key in on Remmich and try and shut him down. BUt if both Knoll and Remmich (and jordan) are healthy in the finals i see a blow out in the final by Southeast whether its kapaun or Derby. After what they did to liberal i dont really see a chance for anyone else.

I agree. Maize you cant start talking stuff unless you start to play a decent team. By watching your game of course you wooped on emporia but they lacked in every position possible. I hear Southeast consist of 3 wizard players. Both with other great players around the city. Theyre gonna be hard to beat this year. Derby not so much hype, they have good players throughout but will they be strong enough to take on a team such as nw kapaun or libreal? Any votes on which team looks the best so far?

Come on Varsity Kansas, Eagle, CatchitKansas and other sports reporting affiliates. Give soccer the coverage it deserves! They’re are some great players and teams out there that should get more than a tiny piece of print, boxscore or whatever in you’re coverage. Soccer may never be like football, basketball or baseball in the state of Kansas, but it certainly deserves a lot more attention than the coverage you’re giving it!

I know there aren’t too many girls saying much, but i’m going to. First of all talk is cheap unless you are Taylor Knoll and you get a red card for all of the talking. As far as injuries, I don’t know any school around that doesn’t have key players with injuries, but continue to play. SoccerFan89 you seem to be the most intelligent when it comes to soccer knowledge. There are alot of players out there that no one talks about,so I will. Nate Walker (Goddard) great defender, Brandon Carlos (NorthWest) forward and scored their winning goal, Bruce Crandon (Heights), Brian White (S.E.) that’s just a few players that play hard and don’t get any credit were it’s due. On any given day anyone can win or lose,it depends on who wants it most. I hope it’s a great year for SOCCER FANS!

I agree Derby definitely did not look great. But they never do in the titan classic. Last year is a perfect example, they went 0-3 in the classic just to finish the season 12-3-1 with one of those loses to a really tough mac team by one and another was to a very talented topeka washburn rural team in the state quarterfinals. They also avenged their first round loss to NW in overtime by beating them 5-0 at NW in the regular season. Derby always starts shaky but picks it up after the classic. This is a good sign to see Derby actually win their first game of the classic. It’s something they haven’t done in a long time and I think they can only improve.

i do agree that every team will improve after the titan. But thats the point of the titan, see who is the top gun at the start of the season. As for Derby, i think their year was last year with fooshee waltrip cody and that austin guy. Their top guys arent as good this year. City league in my eyes is locked up by Southeast… As long as Knoll keeps his mouth shut and Remmich gets healthy. Sayboukan also needs to stay healthy. As for Derby, they could very well win their league, but as for state i see maize and Southeast meeting up at substate or reginols. Then the winner going to the final four.

Give Credit to kapaun mount karmel they had a good squad and moved the ball really well. Derby came out sluggish and didnt look so good from the start im a derby fan but i know that they need to pick it up to be any good in the regular season because there play last night just isnt going to cut it. They defense was letting the forwards win the ball all night, Derbys forwards werent contesting the 50-50 balls and not making the right runs. So derby has the talent to do it but its about the dedication and hunger to want it. So look for them to get better and improve throughtout the season. So congrats kapuan and good luck in season.

Augusta Orioles @ Rose Hill Rockets @ 7 p.m.
Ramsey Khalidi class of 2010, former Augusta Oriole now a Rose Hill Rocket, may not step on the field from the rumors that have been buzzing around the Augusta area. Rose Hill defeated Bearan Academy 3-1 with Khalidi scoring 2 of their goals, and now rumors is that he is afraid to step on the field against his former teammates. Decision time is coming for the junior. Should be a good one with Augusta having two foreign exchange students playing foward. Area show down in Rose Hill Tuesday.

RHSoccer - what a joke, Rose Hill “Owned” Derby in the pre-season pickup game without most of the Derby key players. I know for a fact that several key players (namely Austin Steadman, Forward and team captain) were not even at that scrimmage so how can you say you owned Derby? Too bad Derby can’t play Rose Hill in regular season with all their players, we’d see who would “own” who.
