0930: Volleyball the Discussion

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

By J.Long

Yeah, you read the name at the top correctly.

With Joanna being out most of this week, It’ll be me giving y’all a place to comment on volleyball. Since I’m busy with soccer and football, I don’t really know a lot about the volleyball teams in the area. And it’s not in my character to try and act like I do.

So here is what I’ve got.

I do know that Northwest at Carroll at 5:30 p.m. should be a pretty good one. Both are tied with Heights for the top spot in the City League, so after tonight it will be a little less crowded at the top.

Any predictions for this city league match-up?

Are there any other good match-ups tonight that people might want to check out?

Kapaun at Southeast Soccer

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

By J. Long

It doesn’t get much better than this.

Kapaun at Southeast, today, 4:30 p.m.

Though Southeast won an earlier meeting of the two teams in the Titan Classic final 3-1, this game should be a little different. That game was played after the horrible rainstorm hit the city. Thus, leaving the field in horrible condition. I think that hurt Kapaun more because its offense relies heavily on passing the ball accurately.

This game will be just as physical as these two teams just don’t like each other. Southeast is the bigger team, but Kapaun is very aggressive and they won’t back down.

For Kapaun (7-2) to be successful today Polo Guzman will have to get things going early. Guzman is very talented and the team feeds off of his energy. He scored the first goal of the game in the earlier match-up, but after that was taken out of the ball game by the Buffaloes.

Southeast (8-1) is coming off a 3-2 loss to Liberal on Saturday. Its recipe for success all season long has been aggressive offense mixed in with smart, sound defense. Taylor Knoll and Trent Remmich are two of the City League’s best goal scorers and if they get the ball in space are almost impossible to stop.

So, who you got?

Where will you be this week? (9-28)

It’s Sunday, so I’m a little ahead of schedule here. But I’ve got some things I need to take care of over the next couple days that have nothing to do with work, sports, high school, games, coaches, players, statistics, etc.

Will you miss me? I would try to blog — and I may still be able to — but I’m not sure what will be happening with my Internet access. No lie, that may be the part of the next few days that just might kill me.

But here’s a look ahead at this week:

Name the best game you’ve ever seen — in person

I started thinking about this on Thursday night after I talked to my mom. She’d just been at the Chicago White Sox-Minnesota Twins game with the rest of my family (yeah, they all went without me. Jerks.).

She said it was the best game she’d ever seen. Said the atmosphere was so amazing, the crowd so into it, the excitement so high. She said she didn’t care if the Twins made the postseason or not after that game because it felt like a World Series game. I got chills just thinking about it.

So what game have you seen that did that to you?

I’m going to break my own rules with this because it wasn’t a game I was at. But it was in 1991 when the Twins beat the Braves to win the World Series in Game 7. I was in Minneapolis at my brother’s place, and as soon as the Twins won, my brothers and I ran downtown (we were on 7 corners for those who know the area). And we high-fived people all the way there. Everyone was yelling, hugging each other. Man, talk about chills.

How about you? Anything stick out?

Name the next upset

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

Whew. I’m exhausted just reading all the posts on the Derby-Hutch game. But I got to thinking — what’s the next upset? We had quite a few over the weekend, specifically Derby over Hutch.

Will Maize beat Derby next week? How about down the line — Will East beat Heights? And is that even an upset?

And this doesn’t have to be just a football discussion. Is there a volleyball team that will score an upset? How about in cross country? Soccer? Don’t Kapaun and Southeast soccer play this week — can Kapaun beat Southeast? And if the Crusaders do win, is that an upset?

Tonight’s games (9-26)

Whew. What a night.

Derby beats Hutch 30-27 (didn’t it see it coming): This is coming from correspondent Taylor Eldridge.

Derby did a lot of deception plays, like Boise State. They did Statue of Liberty’s, Snodgrass would fake throw and hand off behind his back to Wilson. They pulled out all the stops against Hutch. They were getting enough where Hutch had to respect it, and it opened up the passing game for Snodgrass. He passed for over 200 yards.

Derby beats Hutch

I almost titled this, “Let the trash-talking begin.” There’s been great discourse on this blog all week about this game. Derby people had faith, and I give them credit. Derby wins 30-27 AT Hutchinson.

What a win for the Panthers. I knew this game would be tight, but I picked Hutch.

Your thoughts?

Kapaun scored a late touchdown but couldn’t recover the onside kick.

Southeast 21, Kapaun 14 - End of third quarter

Southeast capitalizes on the Crusader fumble and takes a seven-point advantage. Tommy Le took a hand off from Joseph Randle for a 35-yard touchdown and Randle finished the drive with the two-point conversion run. Southeast 21, Kapaun 14 after three quarters.

Kapaun 14, Southeast 13 - 1:29 left in the third quarter

A 59 yard swing pass to Tim Rockett gives Southeast their first score of the second half. However the extra point is missed and Kapaun remains ahead 14-13.

Kapaun fumbled the first play of their drive and Southeast takes over in Crusader territory trailing by 1.
