Kansas.com KSN

About every other month, I get together with a group of intellectuals for lunch at a Chinese buffet. This think tank tends to drift toward issues that some people might not find terribly important, but what do they know?

A discussion this summer, for example, centered on the most obscure Shocker basketball players of the 1980s and 90s. When “Boo Craft” came flying out of someone’s mouth, I conceded the conversation. The person who owned that mouth was Kirk Seminoff, your sports editor of The Wichita Eagle.

Kirk is a longtime friend and well-respected member of the Wichita sports community, so much so that he probably won’t appreciate me relaying that story. Newspaper people are generally a little wary of us loose-lipped television types.

One day after one of these weighty lunches, I mentioned to Kirk that his paper and my television station should be Web partners. He gave me a “hmm.”

And that was all I needed. Over the past couple months, we have discussed the idea with management at our respective entities and, as of last Friday, we’re partners!

Meaning what?

Meaning that KSN will supply video to energize VarsityKansas. Meaning Eagle reporters will become part of out Friday Football Fever coverage. Meaning KSN people will blog on the site (hopefully, with better entries than this one). Meaning we will share precious resources. Meaning that two sports staffs will join together to bring you the best high school Web site in Kansas.

And that’s just the beginning. I hope.

What will determine our future, ultimately, is you. If you aren’t reading this, I need to know why. If you are reading this and don’t find it fascinating, I need to know why. If you don’t think that VarsityKansas is the best high school Web site out there, I need to know why.

I need to know your ideas, thoughts and feelings. Drop me a line anytime at jkobbe@ksn.com.

In the meantime, we’ll get Mark Davidson and Casey Walkup into the blogosphere. And we’ll get Joanna Chadwick and Jonathan Long on the air. And I’ll get Kirk Seminoff back to the table for more deep-fried discussions.

I loved the video blog, great idea. I would like to see more of that.

  • Runnin

I would like to see some stats from every sport… catchitkansas.com is doing an awesome job of getting XC stats so I spend a lot more time over there.

  • Tom

Maybe if you guys get this thing rolling good enough you can get people who cover certain schools and stuff….. I’m happy to provide info on Rose Hill/Mulvane!

  • Jimson

Yeah, the ‘Stats by Sport’ at the top of the page needs to be either taken off or actually used.

  • Hovpen

I’m still stuck on the first sentence. Jim and a group of intellectuals for lunch at a Chinese buffet.

  • Informant

KSN puts videos on varsitykansas.com; but no Wichita Eagle game stories on KSN.com?!?

  • Joanna

Informant — varsitykansas.com is a joint effort. It’s the place to come to find Eagle game stories and to find KSN video.
