Friday recap (9-12)

Sept. 13, 2008 @ 12:13 a.m. by Joanna

Well, it will be a pretty short recap because not much happened in the area tonight. We’ve got some interesting games to check out on Saturday, especially with the tripleheader at Maize — Kapaun-Heights at 11 a.m., BV North-Maize at 2 p.m., Northwest-Carroll at 7 p.m. You could have an amazing day there. And if you’re a Haysville person, why not check out all the little league football games at their stadium and then check out the Dodge City-East game at 7:30.

Today was interesting.I spent most of the day on the phone, trying to track down who was playing and who wasn’t. I called Andover way too many times, and checked in on Clearwater multiple times. I did get a little concerned when I heard the Clearwater AD was out checking to see if anyone could even get from Clearwater to Andover — and he had been gone for quite a while. He turned out to be OK.

It was heartening to see that the area teams worked with each other. Those with artificial turf fields hooked up those without — i.e., the Wichita schools.

It was pretty weird heading out to Towanda and Circle High to watch South play Southeast. It’s pretty embarrassing for Wichita that this little 4A school, which has half the students an East High has, has such a beautiful stadium. Yet Wichita schools couldn’t even play on their fields. Sad, sad, sad.

The stands were pretty empty, too. Only the diehards were out in that crappy rain. Southeast won that game 21-12. I was impressed with how South kept Southeast’s offense — especially Joseph Randle — in check. I thought this game wouldn’t be quite so close, but South took advantage of some situations early.

The weirdest thing of the night for me, though, were these alien-like bugs. Honestly, I’ve never seen such weird bugs. I swear that it rained so long and so hard that these bugs came flying in from another planet.

How about Derby beating Salina Central? That surprised me. Not that I’m dogging Derby, I just thought Central was better than the Panthers. It’s a good win for Derby.

Hutch did as expected and rolled Salina South.  McPherson did the same with Campus. Mulvane did the same with Kingman, Rose Hill with Augusta.

And Haven gets a win! Ending its losing streak at 30 games. Wow. Congrats to Haven. I hate to see a team keep losing like that.

Collegiate beats Marion, too.

So did you see a game that we need to know about? Did you hear anything we need to know about? Fill us in.

Question: If these high school games get moved, does the home team still get the gait? I know in Wellington, the switch to Andover Central gives us only three home games. That’s not much money going into the athletic budget.

Did Wichita South quarterback really complete only 5 of 30 passes last night? Maybe a misprint I thought, is why I ask. I never heard of anything like that. I was not there, but it appeared to be a decent night for South. So congrats to South team. And even if they lose all their games and just beat North and Campus in district games (which seems possible) they will get to go to state playoffs this year!

But if that 5 for 30 passing is correct, I would say South should consider giving another kid (even a lineman or something) a shot at QB next week.!

Jerry, from what I know, each of the sites has a different agreement with the host school.
bbfan, It’s not a misprint. He’s actually a fine enough quarterback, it’s just that Southeast brought a lot of pressure, and it was tough on him. He’ll be fine.

Joanna I agree that it is sad that the wichita kids dont get better, and that the naysayers come out in force when it comes to athletics. I think that it is important to note that less than 1/3 of the bond is for athletics, about 140 million of the bond is given back to us through taxes we already paid and in federal money (25% buttons) and that it is the right thing to do.

Please get out and vote for our kids and the future of the city.

i think derby’s gonna be a pretty tough team this yr.
Goddard will have a hand full next friday at Derby
    1. Cause derby’s 2-0 for the first time since Young was there
    and
    2. The home crowd..there was well over 2,300 people there against campus…i expect a full capacity crowd…which is like 2,600 i think.

    just lettin’ ya know

Derby’s goin to state this year!!!

    REf BBFAN:

Sometimes a QB is only as good as his receivers, maybe he threw OK, but the passes were dropped. Don’t be too quick to judge any one athlete. There are 11 on the field at any one time.

I don’t know about State Lou, but they are definitely much improved.
