Name the best game you’ve ever seen — in person

Sept. 28, 2008 @ 1:09 a.m. by Joanna

by joanna

I started thinking about this on Thursday night after I talked to my mom. She’d just been at the Chicago White Sox-Minnesota Twins game with the rest of my family (yeah, they all went without me. Jerks.).

She said it was the best game she’d ever seen. Said the atmosphere was so amazing, the crowd so into it, the excitement so high. She said she didn’t care if the Twins made the postseason or not after that game because it felt like a World Series game. I got chills just thinking about it.

So what game have you seen that did that to you?

I’m going to break my own rules with this because it wasn’t a game I was at. But it was in 1991 when the Twins beat the Braves to win the World Series in Game 7. I was in Minneapolis at my brother’s place, and as soon as the Twins won, my brothers and I ran downtown (we were on 7 corners for those who know the area). And we high-fived people all the way there. Everyone was yelling, hugging each other. Man, talk about chills.

How about you? Anything stick out?

Of course there’s going to be a bias since I’m a student of Southeast, but here are mine…

    1. SE vs. East basketball @ Koch Arena 2008 (Gantt 4-point play)
    2. SE vs. Kapaun soccer @ Titan Classic Semifinals 2006 (Southeast wins in PKs)
    3. SE vs. Kapaun basketball @ Kapaun 2006 (double overtime victory by Southeast)
    4. SE vs. East basketball @ 6A State Semifinals 2008 (southeast beats east to move on to finals against Lawrence)
    5. SE vs. East football @ Carpenter 2006 (southeast beats heavily favored east squad)

Salina Central @ Maize, Soccer 2007- Maize won the game with a last second buzzer beater shot in soccer! ( I mean how many buzzer beaters have you seen in soccer?)

Royals over the Cardinals, Game 6 of the 1985 World Series in KC. Lutz is still whining childishly about it. For a half hour after the game, fans couldn’t leave the celebration. There was still to be a game the next day, but the World Series was over.

At the time OU was considered to be one of the best college teams of all time. Sproles was “electric”.

  6. Jim says:

In 1969, the K-State football team was still among the historically worst. But they hammered Oklahoma — I think the score was 59-21. A former high school teacher of mine was literally in shock when I saw him right after the game. After four years in school in Manhattan, this was the first football game he’d ever seen the Wildcats win.

Typical Derby fan. 4 state titles in a row still outweighs anything you have done this year. Look beyond your nose.

Hutch-Rockhurst was pretty special. Royals-Cardinals Game 6 World Series. That whole Twins-Braves Series in 1991 was spectacular. OU-Florida State in 2001 was pretty good. Their are so many. Good idea for a blog Joanna.

  21. Kirk says:

    Three for me:

    1. WSU 66, KU 65 in the NCAA Midwest Regional semifinal in New Orleans, March 1981. Incredible game, incredible shot, incredible celebration the rest of the night . . . even for a 14-year-old.

    2. WSU 3, Creighton 2, 11 innings, 1991 College World Series. First time a Nebraska team had been in the CWS, so the already-cool Rosenblatt was just rocking that night. Sat in the LF bleacher seats amid thousands of new-found Creighton fans. Every batter, every pitch had us on the edges of seats, and Audley’s throw to the plate (and Mirabelli’s deke/tag) was legendary.

    3. Greatest high school game I ever saw was Atchison’s four-overtime victory over Haven in the Class 4A boys basketball semifinals, 1988. Haven’s Tod Bernard hit 25-footers at the buzzer in regulation and the second overtime to keep the game going. Atchison had many more weapons, but Haven had Bernard. Never seen a basketball player as spent afterward.

  23. Shawker Fan says:

Two games definitely come to mind:
    1) The Battle of New Orleans - Wichita State 66, KU 65
I was a 19 year old, wide eyed kid and this was my first big road trip away from my folks. New Orleans was a wide open town back then and we had a ball!
    2) 1989 College World Series Championship game - WSU 5, Texas 3
Left my poor pregnant wife at home and drove up for the game with friends; paid for it after I got home. The most inspirational player EVER to play any game played in this game - Bryant Winslow with a bum leg that was beyond bad. Partied with the team that night!

Also, the 2007 Derby vs Wichita East playoff game was a good game. This was where it was evident that Derby had turned the corner on their way back to being a winning program.

Actually, two games, back to back: Haven (3-17), the seventh seed, beat Kingman, the second seed, and Smoky Valley, the third seed, in the Class 4A Kingman substate in 2001. Although Haven came up short in the substate finals against Andale, I will always remember the Wildcat’s performance, getting to the Sweet 16 in Class 4A after a season of adversity and difficulty. I will never forget Haven Coach Brad Morris jumping for joy after the Kingman game. The team finished with a 5-18 record, but were one game from the state tournament in Salina. Coaches all around the area use that substate run to show their teams to keep working hard all season because it can pay off.

Are we just talking about football or all sports? If all sports I was once at a ncaa division 2 basketball game. The home team was down 48-18 at the half and came back to win 88-84. They scored 70 points in the second half! Great game. I went to the college so I’m a little bias. Best football game I’ve been to Lufkin HS (TX) v. Euless Trinity..Lufkin is down 20-0 at the half and Reggie McNeil led them back to win 21-20 in a torrential downpour and high winds on a sprained ankle. Amazing.

Here are mine in no particular order…

1: Wichita State vs: Creighton at WSU. “The Shot”

2: KU breaking it’s losing streak to KSU at Memorial Stadium.

3: Game 6 of the 1985 World Series.

4: 1999 Kansas 4a Playoffs. Ottawa vs: Louisburg. 19-17 Louisburg wins in a game that was not decided until the final whistle blew.

5: Derby over Hutch this year. It still may make people mad, but it was one heck of an entertaining football game and Derby fans were still scared when Hutch got the ball back with 30 seconds to go.

Carroll vs KMC 1997 31-30 in dbl overtime ,the first time we’d beaten the wabbits in bout ten years. Carroll vs Great Bend sub state last year , last minute hook an ladder for the winning TD , the place exploded, it was awesome. South Titans vs North Redskins couple years back , Souths first win in 29 games was it? 7-6 over North , You would’ve thought they won the Superbowl.

  38. PresbPastor says:

    Four games are truly tied:
    1. The WSU / Iowa basketball game in 1981 that allowed WSU to make it to the Battle of New Orleans. The totally wild, crazy, and desperate come-back from 15 points down in the second half Randy Smithson gave the fans the credit for the victory - for our standing up, cheering the guys on, and not letting the Shocks stay down.
    2. I’m NOT a KU fan, but the KU-OU football game in 1968, in Lawrence was truly one for the ages. (This was the KU team that lost the 1969 Orange Bowl game to Penn State because of 12 men on the field.) It was totally back and forth, the whole game. Finally, on the last snap, with time expired, Bobby Douglas threw a pass probably 75 or 80 yards in the air that an OU defender barely deflected in the end zone out of the grasp of the KU receiver. It should be shown on TV sometime. It was electrifying!
    3. The great WSU-Cincinnati game (probably 1963??) when WSU with Stallworth, Bowman, and crew came from 3 points down with 18 seconds to play (and no 3-point goals back then) to win by 3. (And the game the year or two before which Ernie Moore saved for us at the end was just as great!)
    4. The WSU-Michigan game when we “upset” them here 100-94 (ca 1964). Cazzie Russell and Bill Buntin starred for them. Warren Armstrong (Jabali), at 6′2″ out jumped 6′10″ Buntin for the opening tip by probably 8″ or more (seriously), and the two very best teams in the nation played their hearts out. It was astounding!
