Where will you be this week? (9-28)
Sept. 28, 2008 @ 1:57 p.m. by Joannaby joanna
It’s Sunday, so I’m a little ahead of schedule here. But I’ve got some things I need to take care of over the next couple days that have nothing to do with work, sports, high school, games, coaches, players, statistics, etc.
Will you miss me? I would try to blog — and I may still be able to — but I’m not sure what will be happening with my Internet access. No lie, that may be the part of the next few days that just might kill me.
But here’s a look ahead at this week:
Tuesday has a big soccer game with Kapaun at Southeast. This is the game that even if you don’t follow area soccer closely, you know this is a biggie. There’s a long history in these two schools’ rivalry, coupled with the fact that these programs are always tough in soccer, combined with the fact that Southeast is having an outstanding season. Whew. That’s a lot right there. Even though I believe I saw that Liberal beat Southeast on Saturday, this should be a great game. Will you be at this game?
(On a side note, I’ve never understood the hatred some have for soccer. Is there any other sport that makes people say that they hate it and only losers play it? I don’t think so.)
In volleyball on Tuesday, there’s Northwest at Carroll, and Heights and Kapaun at East. Kapaun has lost twice, while Northwest, Carroll and Heights all have one loss. I’m loving that this is actually an interesting City League this year. I detest it when one team just rolls over everyone. Boring.
Looking ahead in volleyball, the Andover tournament on Saturday should be a good one. Will Clearwater and Andover actually meet? They were supposed to on Tuesday, but Clearwater couldn’t play because of overscheduling. That’s too bad for both teams — and the fans.
Cross Country had the Rim Rock Classic yesterday — were you there? I hear that’s a wonderful course.
In tennis, the City League meet is Saturday at WSU. When are all the other league meets? I don’t have the info right in front of me, so feel free to share.
In football we’re back to a Thursday game in the City League, and it’s West playing yet again. Can you believe that West has three Thursday night games? I know it’s difficult to make schedules — I want no part of it — but wouldn’t it be a great opportunity to showcase better teams on Thursday night when so many other people can go watch? Anyway, it’s Kapaun vs. West, and West is 1-3, Kapaun 0-4. I’m still picking Kapaun because of its tough schedule.
Friday night, we have East at Carroll as the big game. East won this game last year and that’s when the Aces really showed the area that it was for real. Of course, East struggled thereafter, but still. East is undefeated, but this is the first real test for the Aces. Carroll wins this game.
Northwest plays Southeast at Carpenter in a game that Southeast also has a chance to prove itself. It was a good win over Kapaun last week, and Joseph Randle is continuing to have a good season. But I think Northwest wins this one in a close game. Demarcus Robinson will go crazy in the running game.
South plays at Hays. Hays wins.
Ah, we get to hear some more trash talking this week, with Maize at Derby. We heard a lot from Maize folks heading into the Hutch game, Derby fans have been all over the place on this blog heading into its game at Hutch and since the victory. I’m taking Derby.
Salina South is at Goddard. Salina South wins.
Hutchinson is at Salina Central, and Hutch makes its losing streak just one game. McPherson rolls at Ark City, and Buhler will lose its first game at Andover Central.
Rose Hill plays at Andale in what is easily one of the best games in the area. Rose Hill is 4-0, but its wins are over Circle, Augusta, Kingman and Clearwater. Andale is 3-1, losing a close one to Winfield and winning at Wellington. I’ll take Andale.
Collegiate’s at Haven in what I believe will be a blowout.
All right, that’s what I’ve got. What great game is out there that I missed? Where will you be?

Andover at Parsons. I don’t know how good Parsons is, besides they are at 1-3, while Andover is at 3-1.

Appearantly you guys have’nt noticed how Rose Hill’s freshman and Junior Varsity have dominated Andale the last 2 years! It’s also amazing how no one mentions Rose Hill untill they play someone like Andale. Wake up people the jesey does’nt make the team, It’s the team that makes the jrersy. My opinion is that Andale is overrated because of its past. Rose Hill wins by 10.

The City League obviously doesn’t consider marketing in making its schedule. You’re a reporter, Joanna, why not ask somebody why West plays on three Thursday nights instead of just wondering outloud on a blog? Remember the Friday last year when the East-Carroll game was played at Heights, where people ringed the track several deep and many had to be turned away, while two weak teams were scheduled into the much larger and 85 percent empty Carpenter Stadium? I think anticipated interest and crowd size really should be part of the equation in scheduling the venues where the public schools host their games.

Mark, would that be a hint at possibly moving the East vs. Carroll game to a larger venue????

This Friday Carroll will be on its home field for the first time this season, and it is homecoming. There’s no chance this one will be moved. Mark is otherwise right on the scheduling and venue selection.

I don’t think the Carroll students and administration would mind a few more thousand people to enjoy their Homecoming festivities with them. This would be so great for the City if this game was Thursday night at WSU.

So student-athletes / schools with less success should not be allowed to play at the nicer venues because not as many people come out to support them? Don’t we already have enough differentiation between the “haves” and “have nots”? The kids put in just as much time and effort to try and improve… Are we so sure that some team “deserves” the chance to play in the nicer stadiums more often than other school because we think more folks might come? What message are we sending those guys who are already struggling? The city schools without a stadium are already at a huge disadvantage not having a home - but Carpenter is at least the most “neutral” ground with similar locker rooms that are not a half mile from the field. Lets think about equity a bit before we jump on this bandwagon. WHat if you attended North high and two weeks in a row you play at Heights - the first week you are the “home” team that dresses in a girls locker room, but week two you have to play against Heights at Heights and its thier homecoming and this time you dress in a auxillary gym without a bathroom. Can you see my point?

I appreciate your comments, Iknowbetter. Let’s all get behind the bond issue, so the facilities are better everywhere. But I’m not saying the weaker teams would never be at Carpenter. Two games a week are played there, which means four teams, and often Kapaun (glad they overcame the head-in-the-sand opposition of some AD’s and can use Cessna) and/or Carroll have home games. Sometimes City League teams are out of town as well, so there would still be opportunities for everyone to play at Carpenter. I’m just saying make the Thursdays game a marquee matchup when possible - and even if it means Heights or Northwest has to play a “home” game at Carpenter, or South has to play a “home” game elsewhere. This would actually even things up a bit between teams that have a stadium and those who don’t. This week, for example, why isn’t the Northwest/Southeast matchup a marquee Thursday pairing? West/Kapaun could still play at Carpenter, but on Friday. If there is a Friday game that looks like a probable overflow crowd elsewhere, put it in Carpenter. I can’t imagine that Carroll would give up its home game this week, but, yes, wouldn’t it be great for that one to be at a larger venue on a Thursday, like maybe Friends, so everyone who wants could see the Blake Bell/Bryce Brown matchup?

Alan I meant the JV class back when they were freshman, which would have been the freshman class of “06″. Those Games aren’t even close check them out, and by the way hasn’t the only team that Andale played that should be considered descent (which is winfield) and they lost to winfield right? So this stuff about who has Rose Hill played holds no water. Your schedule is your schedule. Rose Hill plays at Andale so Andale should have no problem easily taking care of Rose Hill right? hmmmm?

Joanna, I wish you would start mentioning Derby soccer games in your blogs. Derby has won their last 6 matches, their last defeat was in the Titan Classic. The Maize game tonight was fantastic, the offense and defense really stepped it up to come from a goal behind go win 2-1 in the second half. Austin Steadman is definitely one of the better players in the region, he now has 11 goals and 6 assists. Nathan Garrison was fantastic in goal and the defense did a great job in the second half for certain. It is a pleasure to watch these young men play! Way to go Panthers! Keep it up!

If it’s a game that’s won on the line of scrimmage, Carroll will have the advantage. East lost its starting center to injury and will need to rework personnel and blocking schemes. However, East obviously has a big play mentality - it may be a game that hinges on a 90-yard kickoff return, a 95-yard pass play, a big interception return. East has superb speed in both its offensive and defensive skill positions (for want of a better term). East will not grind out any long scoring drives against Carroll - if East is in the game, it will be due to big plays, and I do think there could be a few. I call it Carroll by five.

They have showed that time and time again from 2 yrs ago while playing freshman ball to last year in JV, and check for yourself if you weren’t there. The game wasn’t even close. Rose Hill walked up and down the field on them. Guess who was playing in those games? The same guys that are going to be playing Friday night! Oh by the way, just in case you like to use the home field advatage BS. Last years JV game was at Andale and it might as well been played at Rose Hill being it was by far the easiest win Rose Hill had all year!
