Football predictions (10-3)
Oct. 2, 2008 @ 12:56 p.m. by Joannaby joanna
I’m back. I can’t believe how much I missed this blog. I didn’t even go online from Sunday afternoon until this morning, so I had no idea that the talk between Hutch and Derby folks is still going on. Wow. And it’s pretty civil. Impressive.
All right, let’s head into Friday’s games and the predictions.
The two biggest games of the night are East at Carroll and Rose Hill at Andale. I will be at East-Carroll — and check me out on KSN, Ch. 3. I’ll be live with Mark Davidson. I’ll try not to make the gaffe that I did the last time I was on with Mark. It was the Hesston-Collegiate game and I wore a red and black shirt — Hesston’s colors. That was terrible. And I actually think about what I’m going to wear to games so I don’t make that mistake. Dumb, dumb, dumb.
Anyway, let’s hit Rose Hill at Andale. This game has evolved into a wonderful rivalry over the past several years. In 2006 Andale beat Rose Hill twice — during the regular season and then in the playoffs when Rose Hill was 10-1, Andale 11-0. Last year, Andale won 21-7.
Rose Hill comes into this game 4-0, and it’s been playing well. But Rose Hill has beaten Circle (1-3), Augusta (0-4), Kingman (0-4), Clearwater (0-4). Andale is 3-1, losing to Winfield (2-2), and beating Clearwater (0-4), Circle (1-3) and Wellington (2-2). Andale’s opponents don’t look that much different, but Wellington is a quality team, and Winfield is a fine team, too.
I’m taking Andale.
Onto East at Carroll. I’m liking that East has expanded its offense, focusing on its passing game instead of just handing off to Bryce Brown. Byers has 537 passing, third in the City League, while Brown has 764 rushing. This is going to be key against Carroll. If East hadn’t established its passing game by this point, it would be in trouble. Carroll’s defense will cause problems for East, though. While Brown will do his business as usual, Byers probably won’t have as much time to get into a passing rhythm.
Carroll’s offense will be the difference in this game, though. Quarterback Blake Bell already has 1,183 passing yards. He’s having an unbelievable season and he’s got a stable of receivers that he can hit. Plus, he can run. So can Nick Seiler and Joe Brown. I just don’t think that East can stop Carroll.
While East beat Carroll last year, I don’t see it happening this year.
For tonight’s game, Kapaun vs. West at Carpenter. Yes, it’s crazy that Kapaun is winless and West has a win. But West hasn’t had Kapaun’s schedule, and Kapaun wins handily.
Back to Friday night. Northwest vs. Southeast is an interesting game to pick. As I said in our weekly Prep Talk (didn’t you like the sweet set that KSN let us use? Loving it.), Southeast has got to be sick and tired of us saying that the Buffs need to prove themselves. Well, I’m saying it again. The Kapaun win last week was a good game for Southeast. It shut up any naysayers out there (and wasn’t Joseph Randle phenomenal?). But Northwest will win this game. I think the Grizzlies are too strong up front and will disrupt Southeast’s offense. Randle will still have a nice game. The only problem I see is if Northwest doesn’t find some balance to its offense. If Southeast shuts down Demarcus Robinson, I’m thinking the Buffs win.
North at Heights – Heights wins.
South at Hays – Hays wins. Hays had a good win over Garden City last week, giving the Indians to edge for me.
Buhler at Andover Central — Tough, tough game to pick. Tough. I’d prefer not to pick this game. But here goes. I’m taking Andover Central. Yes, I know that Buhler beat Andover in the season opener and that Andover beat Andover Central. I know that. Logic says to pick Buhler. But I’m still going with Andover Central. Man, I hate picks like this.
Maize at Derby — Derby’s 4-0 and beat Hutch and is ranked in state and beat Maize 40-21 last year. Maize is 2-2, played well with Hutch….. I have nothing else. I’m taking Derby. Yes, as I said in Prep Talk, there is a danger that Derby is still reveling in its upset of Hutchinson. But I don’t see it happening. Derby wins in a close one.
Here’s the rest of Friday’s schedule. I’m not going to pick every game, but feel free to pick a game on this list, debate why I’m wrong or right in my picks or let us know what game we have to be watching for.
Where will you be? Let us know.

I can’t believe Circle even scored on Rose Hill not to mention led the game at one point. Also did Clearwater have an INT at the end of the game to go down in defeat to Rose Hill? Pratt and Andover pounded Clearwater.
Andale also lost to a not very good Winfield team and only beat Clearwater by 6 so they haven’t played the best either at times. That being said, Andale played a lot better the last two weeks and if they show up they should win.
[REPORT A VIOLATION]
October 2nd, 2008 at 3:59 pm
eh… Circle led because of an INT return for TD. Clearwater had a few big plays, but Rose Hill handled them okay. Andale’s not as strong as they used to be, but they did pound Wellington.
Mighty Wildcat… Mulvane over Augusta? Not going out on a limb there are you? The question should be, will Augusta gain positive yards? Circle and Kingman are better than Augusta.
What may end up swinging the Rose Hill-Andale game is the fact it is in Andale. Rose Hill must avoid turnovers as they can’t afford to give Andale short fields. Likewise, the defense forcing a turnover or two would be big, so Myles Pinick doesn’t have to end up with 35 carries.

Bennington, at Moundridge better bring 8 in the box to try and get Moundridge out of its running game!!! But that’s not gonna happen… Homecoming for Moundridge and Jayson Kaufman averaging almost 10yds a carry. Jacob Stucky’s running keeps the defense guessing who’s gonna carry next! Moundridge has a first class line that just keeps opening the holes for the backs!!!

Pretty Prairie over Fairfield by at least 20. I’d bet south barber gets more than 8 against quivira. They might not be as good as past years, but they’ll still get more than 8. Claflin and Canton Galva should be a good one, with Claflin winning. And Burrton vs Attica should be entertaining just because neithers any good. Attica last week at Pretty Prairie looked like the worst football team i’ve ever seen. They were scared to death.

Maize won’t stay with Derby as they did against hutch. Derby by a minimum of 21. Too many weapons for Derby and only one (soft) for Maize. But look on the bright side Maize fans Derby serves up great Pork sandwiche, burgers and brat dinners. So you can feast on these while the Panthers feast on Eagles. East gets a taste of the real world tonight when BC gives them their first loss. Biggest intrigue is the NW/SE matchup. This game may come down to who finds a better passing game. Weather forecast is for another great night of High School football.

I am a winfield resident and go to all the games to watch my kid play. Winfield is going to have to quit being cowards on defense mostly the defensive backs, the offense has to step up the passing game because right now its the worst its ever been because of the junior quarterback who has an arm of a 8 year old softball pitcher! I hope they turn around within the next few weeks or it’ll be a repeat of last years season.

East’s Running back isn’t anything compared to the talent that the Wichita West team has. The only reason Bryce is getting attention is because Pacman Jones was in the media alot lately and they both just look alike. There.

Derby 34, Maize 6 - Can’t see that Maize brings anything too threatening to the table here. If Hutch had kept ball on the ground instead of trying to experiment with a passing game they would have beat Maize by 2 or 3 additional TDs. I see Derby taking charge tonight on the heels of Snodgrass and leaving Maize in the dust.
Maize plays football about as well as Derby plays baseball.

“bryce brown could beat west all by himself” He would probably lose by a TD in OT. I love football season!

Derby scores a 100? You do remember that you beat Hutch by only 3 and only because of a blind ref. Don’t get to far ahead of yourselves. Pork Chop sandwiches sound delicious though. Hutch destroys Salina Central and doesn’t fumble. Now that would be a shocker.

Okay I missed it I said Derby by a minimum of 21 and it was 20. I sincerly hope that Soft’s injury and the injury to Maize’s running back aren’t severe. despite trash talking we never hope to see someone suffer a serious injury. Lane maybe you should and the Aces should have focused on BC. Brown got almost 300 yds or maybe over 300 yds against Derby last year and still it wasn’t enough. Derby still has to beat a good Salina South team next week at Salina before looking to the city league teams. If Derby comes out flat like they did against Maize they may roll into district with a 5-1 record. Too bad BC and Heights don’t get to play again I would like to see that game as I missed the first one. I guess RoseHill found out what it is like to not play your weak sister. Thought they were over-rated and last night proved it. I am still standing by my pediction of Derby & Heights out of that district. And lastly I may pass on the Derby game to see BC and Hutch If that transpires. Hutch roared back with a vengence last night. But Hutch does still have to face Mac and Mr. Tom. See ya in the funny papers.

BTW Eagle reporter Jordan Bass Derby’s QB is Jake Snodgrass not Jeff. He’s only been in the papers everyweek for the past 2 1/2 years. But I guess meeting a deadline doesn’t require correct names. And along the line of Sports reporting or maybe I should say sports reporting the Derby team on 93.5 Is terrible. I have heard better broadcast from the loud speaker at jr Football games. I hate having to miss a game because I have to listen to your inept broadcast. You have been doing this for how long? You get names wrong, numbers wrong, penalties wrong and placement of the ball wrong. Quit trying to inject your insight and just report the game.

I agree Derby Dad; I believe they’re a couple of homers that mean well. IIRC, one of them has been involved with Derby Junior Football so maybe they’re a little too close (psychologically) to the game to be effective. Fortunately I can’t pick up the channel at my house here in Derby so I don’t have my sensibilities pummeled. When I am out driving I’ll tune in and I am like “just give me the score!” They probably ought to keep their day jobs.

Lou you were correct. QB fumbled once and lost it other wise a dominant performance by the offense and defense. Hutch still needs to work on short and middle pass defense. Salina Central did not score until the Junior Varsity defense walked on the field in the third quarter.
