Friday’s recap (10-3)

Oct. 4, 2008 @ 12:53 a.m. by Joanna

by joanna

It’s much quieter on the blog tonight compared to last week when Derby beat Hutch. It kind of makes me sad.

But then no game tonight had near the wow factor as that game. Here’s my recap on a few of the games in the area.

Probably the biggest game of the night was East at Bishop Carroll. Carroll wins 49-14 (I called this - but not that big of a margin)

East came in undefeated, while Carroll had lost its season opener against Heights before winning the next three. I think we all expected this to be a tight one. East seemed to have established its offense as a balanced one — passing and Bryce Brown, I mean, a running game. Blake Bell has established himself as the area’s best quarterback.

Brown had a good game, with 228 rushing yards and three touchdowns. He also caught three passes. Brown did have a fumble that Carroll recovered for a touchdown. East QB Matt Byers struggled, completing 8 of 20 for 117 yards and an INT. Byers overthrew some, and his receivers dropped some.

East hurt itself with special teams, too. It had a six-yard punt into the wind to start the game, then had a punt blocked. Carroll took advantage both times.

As for Carroll, Bell had a good game, too. He threw for 261 yards and had three rushing and three passing TDs. He had an interception and a fumble, too.

The halftime was one of the weirdest I’ve ever seen. The clock hit zero and the entire Carroll team headed for the locker room. After they were all gone, the ref said to put 7 seconds back on the clock. Carroll came racing back for the final play, got an unsportsmanlike penalty that put East at the 20, and Carroll still had players coming out about 5 minutes later. Byers was intercepted to end the half. Weird, weird, weird.

Joe Brown had a strong night with 101 receiving yards.

OK, moving on. Northwest defeats Southeast 17-14 (I called this). Both teams needed this win. Northwest needed it because it came into the game at 2-2. Southeast needed it to prove it’s not just a product of a weak schedule.

Heights defeats North 61-7 (I called this). According to Jeff Lutz — Dorrian Roberts ran the opening kick off 90 yards for a touchdown, Heights led 21-0 after seven minutes, five players scored rushing TDs and North had 18 rushes of 1 yard or less.

Hays defeats South 24-10 (I called this).

Andale defeats Rose Hill 33-7 (I called this). Again, a game that I thought would be much closer. As in the East-Carroll game where the Eagles took a 42-0 lead, Andale was up 33-0 before Rose Hill scored. This is a good win for Andale, which has recovered nicely from its loss to Winfield that ended the Indians’ 29-game winning streak.

From Taylor Eldridge — Andale dominated the line of scrimmage the whole game, rushing for 236 yards. Andale took the opening drive 80 yards on 17 plays — all running plays. Rose Hill had 102 yards of offense, minus a trick play that went for 51 yards.

Andover Central beats Buhler 28-14 (I called this). Andover Central had 339 rushing yards — 226 from Keaton LaBanca. Buhler had 3 turnovers. And Andover Central’s back on track.

Clearwater and Valley Center get their first wins of the season, Goddard falls to 0-5. El Dorado beats Winfield (I didn’t call that). Hutchinson takes out its anger on Salina Central (71-24), and Mac beats up on Ark City (35-7).

What’s with Mulvane beating Augusta in overtime? I didn’t see that coming. Yes, I picked Mulvane to win …. but that close? No way.

So where were you tonight? Did you see a great game? Were you surprised — or bummed out — by a game? Let’s hear about it.

Mulvane lost Jordan Gosch. He didn’t play at all. They kept trying to run the ball with very little success. Gus strunk and AJ May were QB. Mulvane never really started throwing the ball until the 4th 1/4.
Once they started throwing they began moving the ball. Several times they were 3 and out, punting from deep in their own territory.
They turned the ball over I think twice around their own 1 yd line.
They came dang close to loosing that game.

    UNREAL!!

I believe if Jordan doesn’t return (he has a back injury I was told) Mulvane could have a very tough time with the rest of their games.
They have had some pretty tough breaks this year, loosing Huldon, Tyler Springer was out for 2 games now Jordan

I think it is time that some schools start looking to new coaches\teachers. North in particular has some talent but needs someone who can motivate these kids to play as a team. East has too much talent not to have a chance to win every game. If your QB can’t make a play then coach you should not put him in those situations or send him to some camps have some pride. And City league stop recycling coaches if they don’t win at one school they probably wont win at yours! I don’t want to quote Brian Butler but I have too. “ There is some talent here in Wichita it just needs to be developed.” Maybe someone should offer butler a head-coaching job. He seems to be putting some kids into collage and I think that is priority one. Maybe the AD’s should go to Hutch and BC and offer some of the assistance jobs or maybe look outside the box to some of the coaches that win in the kids leagues but yes times are a changing and sports can open the doors for a lot of kids to get quality educations.

I thought Goddard might show some life but as one of their fans told me at work this week “They have mailed in” the season. When they played Derby I saw some things the could build on but obviously their Coaching staff didn’t. “LET YOUR QB THROW” You still have a chance to be competative but you have got to give the QB more reps to work on his timing.
As far as the rest of the night. Just as expected.

Joanna: not to be a stickler, but you were all over the board on your Northwest - Southeast prediction. It looks like you were set up to have it either way.

It it too bad for many of the kids that the coaches can not make any adjustments. Every game our dbs get beat deep and we keep throwing the same guys out there. It is pretty obvious that we get outcoached each game, but our coaches don’t really coach they just cheerlead. Next week will be ugly against Hutch, we should just save the school district gas money and forfeit. Goddard has some talent, to at least be competitive but we are getting beat by 3-4 touchdowns. I think more people are seeing that last year was more because of Watkins and other seniors and not the coaches. This year we are seeing how good the coaches really are.

Nobody mentioned the Andover-Parsons game. We killed them 62-0. With that much of a lead, during the 4th quarter, coach decided to let JV play the rest of the 4th quarter, about 5 minutes. Parsons still couldn’t stop us, and Andover ended up with another Touchdown.

Almighty Wildcat- LOVE you man (nothing personal) thats great news. Different people were telling me at the game he had hurt his back. Not sure why they were telling me that, thats the reason I put my statement in ( ) I wasn’t quite sure.

Mulvane didn’ seem to be throwing the ball much in the 1st & 2nd 1/4s, any idea why? Does Fenwald call the plays?

Can you tell me why Gosch was suspended? Email me if you need to (kh46@sbcglobal.net)

My son plays for wellington and we beat up on Circle last night and as much as i’m glad for that, it really shouldn’t have been that easy circle has some talent they have a gifted defensive line and some good linebackers and for the past 2 years there offense has just sucked, they need a new head coach..

Joanna Derby you may have heard of it ? just south of Wichita. This board seems to somewhat ignor Derby but im sure you will tell me 100 reasons why thats not true. Last week we get 2 bad teams SE/KMC on the front page and this week not even a mention in your recap. I dont expect this to change anything at all we know the SE/KMC/BC/ANDOVERS are what brings in the $$$ for yall. Varsity Kansas uh Not ! I have seen plenty more examples in the past and like i said i dont expect it to change or yall to admit to it but its pretty clear if you ask me.

  15. obssesed says:

football fan - If thats the case that was a pretty stupid move.
Who suspended him? Cant’t see why Fenwald would, looks like that would hurt Mulvane worse than Jordan.

Mulvane is a totally different team this year. It’s almost like they are not real motivated. They’ve made some really dumb mistakes and have lost almost as many yds in penalties as they have gained rushing 432yds of penalties and 653 rushing, thats an avg. of 85yds of penalties per game 136 rushing.

They turned the ball over twice at Andover in their own territory, not only giving And. 10 pnts. but loosing 2 opportunities to score themselves

Whats the heck is going on.

  16. Fballfn says:

obssessed so what it was weed cocaine exactly where when would you suspend a player. Yes it sucks for his teamates but thats on him not the coach . Bishop Carroll set a great example last year and hopefully every other school will follow.

Yes Mulvane has a different attitude this year they lost there “star” and it has deflated the entire team in my opinion. This is the coachs fault if in fact its true but i applaud him for sticking to team rules.

Joanna ‘Ignore” was a little strong but yall and the Eagle do “backpage” Derby for the most part.

  17. cat fan says:

A payer broke team rules and paid the penalty. Nothing more nothing less. Mulvane won - but it was a rough game. At least one offensive player was out sick and a defensive player is injured. So they were playing without several key people and won anyway.

Are they as good as they would’ve been with Tharp? probably not but they’ll still be in the top half with a winning season.

Keep it in perspective - it’s HS football - it’s the end for the vast majority of seniors. Tell them to have fun and enjoy it while they can. They won’t play after this year is over.

  18. obssesed says:

I agree with you Fballin Mulvane has been deflated from the loss of Huldon. It was a major blow. By the way I heard Huldon might be going to KU.
Not saying Jordan shouldn’t have been suspended. The stupid move I was refering to was on Jordans part not on the one who suspended him.
I agree with the suspension. However not being certain as to who suspended him just made me wonder who did? Not trying to blame anyone for anything, just trying to get the facts.

cat fan - Didn’t know about the player out sick or the injured.
Who was injured? Hope it wasn’t bad.
I hate to see anybody sick or hurt.
Mulvanes my favorite team I would never intentionally say anything bad about them. I Like the winning season part. It will be sad to see the Seniors go. Just wish I could keep up with them to see how they are doing after graduation.

Don’t step on the Wildcat! Do you know I mean?

  21. Football Fanatic says:

I should think that Gosch would be out for several more games. In a responsible school district, once you have broken team rules like drinking you are out for a percentage of games so I would think Mulvane would now bow down to public pressure on this one. I guess we will see what the district is made of.

  23. mhsfan says:

Fb fanatic - most team punishment determined by the coaching staff, with input from the athletic director and HS administration. The district would not normally be involved - unless it’s a very unusual circumstance. 1st offsense is a game suspension. 2nd offense is kicked off the team. He paid the penalty and maybe learned something from it. I’m sure you never did anything dumb in HS - I know I was perfect also. HA There is no public pressure.

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  24. Football Fanatic says:

mhsfan - I would think a responsible school district would have a policy regarding athletes in general and drinking and drug use. It would be irresponsible to let a coach who has an emotional attachment to the player and the team decide the punishment. You might want to check your school handbook. Maybe winning is more important than breaking the law in Mulvane.
