Northwest over Southeast

Northwest 17, Southeast 14.

Northwest coach Weston Schartz loves to let me know that he pays attention when we pick against his Grizzlies. Especially when they win.

Tonight was the first time that I got a chance to see the Buffaloes and honestly, I came away unimpressed. The offense was non-existent in the first half and even though they scored twice in the second half they didn’t seem to have a real offensive rhythm as a team. Joseph Randle was the real deal. I knew he was an athlete, but I didn’t know he would be as good as he is stopping the run.

Demarcus Robinson had 33 carries for 148 yards, with a broken hand. I’ve never been a running back. But, if I did all the work that he did, I’d be kind of mad if the coach didn’t call my number at the goal line. Call it selfish, but hey I need my numbers coach.

As bad as Southeast played in the first half, I couldn’t believe they had a shot at winning this game. Coach Schartz played a little bit conservative in the second half and it almost came back to bite him.

Two Plays that I didn’t understand:

On fourth-down-and-six from the SE 24 in the fourth quarter the Grizzlies go for it and fail to convert. Why not trot Jordan Drake out their and kick the field goal? SE kicking game hasn’t been productive all season. If they kick the field goal, they are up six. That might not mean a lot, but SE hasn’t had the easiest time kicking PAT’s this season.

SE recovered a Tyler Kholman fumble its 9-yard line. They were unable to do anything with it, but at least it stops a 14 play 63 yard NW drive. But on fourth-and-three on their 16-yard line the Buffaloes attempt a fake punt. Huh? They don’t convert and NW scores it’s second touchdown of the game. By the look on coach Guzman’s face I don’t think he called it. Or maybe someone misread the play, I don’t know.

Final Thought:

I don’t know how good Randle’s hands are, but with the game on the line I would have split him out wide and took a chance. This might have been able to open up something for Donald Anderson or another receiver. However, with the way the NW line was getting pressure it might have been in SE best interest to leave him in the backfield to protect Plowden.

Jonathan, You are absolutely right I was at the Southeast vs Northwest game also and I think if Wall Street had coach Schartz there would be no need for a bail-out. Coach Schartz stop playing so conservative or go work for KPERS (Kansas state retirement system). Again maybe I do understand coach Schartz I think it is sometimes better to run a play than kick but lets throw the ball a little please. May be coach Schartz needs a vacation on the beach with a football and some friends and no one can eat or sleep until the old coach throws the ball around. Coach it is very fun try it!!! Plus if you can show some college coaches D-Mac can catch in traffic and hit the jets maybe we can see him play with Harper in Oregon or with a number of others schools who THROW THE BALL!!!!

Why does it have to be D-Mac that is also thrown the pass to? Northwest has established that they have good recievers. So why not throw to them. Lets show college coaches that there ARE other players on that team to contribute to Northwest other then D-Mac.

Sorry buy there is not an other player with that kind of speed on that team. It is what it is.

What you have described is a travesty in football. “You need your numbers coach”? Really!

What you need is a win. It is what they got. If you werent paying attention, the kick in the first quarter cleared by about 5 yards, kicking from the 15. When they went for it on 4th, they were on the 25. This is why writers write and coaches coach.

For all you arm chair wannabe’s out there. If you wanna coach get a team.

  5. Football Fan says:

Wow , Schartz wins game. You try to question his play calling.
Randle gets 69 yards the whole game against at 2-2 team and he is the real deal ? J.Long come on now I have to question you. I see alot of things but for a guy to question the winningest city league coach on play calling, after he wins a game,WOW! Maybe he knows a little more about his team and what they can and can’t do. May have been to conservative the 2nd half but he beat a 4-0 team and got a W.
Now my question that everyone is overlooking.D-Mac and Randle on the same field . Brown is going to be #1 RB in City ,after last night who is #2 RB in the ciity ? D-Mac 33-169 a 5.09 avg and Randle 25 - 69 a 2.71 avg.

  6. Hovpen says:

Randle did an excellent job at shortstop against NW. I thought he did a real good job of bending down and picking up those two hoppers and throwing to first. Of course, the one or two that got over his head he had to run back on and chase down he had no chance to throw anyone out with the base runners crashing into him all the time.

As for D-Mac, I could have averaged 5 a carry running behind 66 the way he was moving out the def. line. Great job of blocking, he should grade out well this week. Credit the SE defense that Robinson didn’t break one, and D-Mac’s 5 ypc goes to the offensive line, not his ability to break open for the long run. No knock, just credit to the line blocking.

One more case in point. It’s hard for Randle to be a game breaker when he is in formation blocking for the quarterback on pass plays all night instead of being a receiver, although he did a very good job of picking up break throughs.

And that was a fairly good 2-2 football team as a result of schedule, not because they aren’t any good.

Well Im a NW parent, Yall need to start giving the Northwest Defense some credit…..They have the 2 best LBS in the city…. Their FS is pretty good…and Whos that #8, He made a big play to the end of the game to help NW close their win over SE.

  8. BOSS says:

i believe what jlong is saying about the “i gotta get my numbers” comment is that when a kid busts his tail and is not rewarded it is one of the quickest ways to lose a kid. It deflates them.
Now i know we dont have any T.O.’s or Ocho-cinco’s in the City. But when a running back brings his team down the field and its effective, then reward him and let him get that TD. Its not a matter of let me get my numbers, but you’ve got to make sure what you do what you’ve got to do in order to keep all of your kids on board.

Now on the other hand, it shouldnt be an issue. In a perfect world a TD is for the whole team, no matter if running back “A” brings it all the way down the field and running back “B” walks it in the endzone. But we are not in a perfect world. We live in a world where running back “A” is pissed off for not being rewarded. Its a matter of these young athletes that have not matured.

I see where jlong is coming from but i also see where other bloggers are coming from.

  9. J Long says:

Boss that’s exactly what I was saying. D-Mac is not the type of kid that would ever say “I need my numbers.” He’s a team guy.
I just felt that he deserved an extra carry or two around the goal line.
Coach Schartz has a job to do and thats to win football games.

LET THE RECORD SHOW by no means am I trying to call out Weston Schartz. I know what he’s done in his career. He’s a great coach and an even better person.

Don’t read too much into this game, SE is the worst 4-0 team and NW is so so, NW won and is a better team than SE that being said their average.

  11. Office says:

Boss what about any other offensive players at NW that bust their tail like the recievers! Iv watched their practice and 81 and 25 are ALWAYS doing something. They run at least 100 routes a practice! JLong dont they need their numbers!?

  12. BOSS says:

    Office:

I understand what you’re saying, but i really dont know what to say because i simply dont know the Offensive schemes for NW. I dont know how many times a game they pass. In some offenses the receivers play a more downfield blocking role. If thats the case then they deserve their props during film and at practice, but accept why they’re needed on friday nights!
But i get where you’re comin from. I was a receiver and never felt like i got the ball enough. It took me a while to realize that our running game was much more effective than our passing game so I accepted my role as a downfield blocker.

  13. Big Kansas says:

Let’s get down to business. If I get the ball as much as DMac, Randall, Brown and etc. I could and would rush as many as yards as they can. People, you need to remember there are many talented players on every squad, and not just one person carries the team. That’s why we call it TEAM! It’s so much politics in the CL that it discourage students to try out for athletic sports. Am I right?

  14. Jack says:

    Big Kansas

I dont think you’re right in this case. Yes, there are politics in every team, but not all.

In some cases, that is just the way the team is run, no politics. Deiner at Central gave it to the same back a million times, not just because it was great backs, but he said at a clinic “that’s who we trust not to turn the ball over. The more times he touches it, the less likely he is to cost us a game.”

    State Championships cant be wrong.

  15. Big Kansas says:

    Jack,

I know it’s not all politics, but if the same person receiving the ball everytime and he’ll fumble or get stop everytime, why would you still give that person the ball..At the NW and SE game, DMac fumble the ball, but he still gets the ball the next time around. Why didn’t they give it to someone else? Another example, Randall was stop quite a bit at the game, but the next time he still gets the ball more than other players? Why not switch up the players and give everyone a chance? PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT……right?

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  16. Office says:

    Boss:

I understand where your coming from to but in the long run, in order to have success you HAVE to switch up the play calling. Its becoming pretty apparent to the CL teams that NW love to run. They cant run everytime. What happens if Dmac is shut down in a game. Is the passing game there? All an all I guess im just trying to say switch up the play calling and that as Big Kansas mentions it takes a TEAM to win. And the kids getting the ball 20-30 times a game get big heads and forget that the line, and recievers give them the blocks to run. If not for them good luck getting your yards.

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  17. BOSS says:

Good point, if those recievers are working as hard as you say they are, then they should be ready if the run game is stopped.

i would like to see NW play soon. i always seem to be elsewhere on friday nights

Drake won the game for NW against SE….if u have not noticed, they did win by 3 and drake put the feild goal in from a 32 yarder in the 2nd quarter against the blazing wind, and they northwest defense played great, but i must give some credit to the NW kicker.
