JMJ, I agree also that it is strategy coming down from 11man to 8man. David Hughes is a great coach and has his system in place at South Haven. That is only 1 of the reasons they are so successful. It helps that they have a great middle school program. If middle school coaches run the same offense as high school they now know what to expect when they get older. I think this is in place out South Haven and the results show. At Oxford their middle school plays 8-man and when they were freshmen they had to adapt to the 11-man game. I guess only time will tell if they can develop into a winning program, cause they certainly do have some athletes over there. Or at least they used to anyway

Jack,
mercy rule doesnt necessarilly mean giving up. I coached at a school that used the mercy rule. and at halftime you have the oppertunity to end the game or keep playing. I am just saying with this rule in class 2-1a you may have a team with only 19 or 20 kids out versus a school that may have 40 or 50 out. Smaller 11man schools have several kids that play both ways. If they loose a quarterback they might have just lost a linbacker as well. Some of those schools cant rebound from losing kids in a game that was out of hand anyway. 50 point lead at halftime is difficult for any team to come back from. Not impossible but difficult.

Blackshirtsfootball-

Oxford dropped down to 8-man this season and haven't had a lot of success even though they have some very good athletes. I wonder if some of it is the change in strategy from 11 to 8. Coaches like David Hughes at South Haven have a real good feel for the 8-man game having been at it for many years.

I think you are going to see much more consolidation in the years to come as enrollment diminishes. But it's really up to the communities to get the kids to participate. Dexter and South Haven have similar enrollments but South Haven has nearly every kid out participating, girls and boys alike.

Mercy Rule = Giving up …not what I want my kid to be taught

Are you saying there should be more 8-man schools?

I would like to talk about the class 2-1a schools this morning. What is going to happen with class in the near future. Small town schools are strugguling with enrollment but are too big for 8-man and too small for 3a. Which I think something needs to be done in this class. Every year 1 or 2 schools drop down out of 2-1a and can be powerhouses in 8-man. On the other hand if they stay in 2-1a they are being crushed every week by bigger schools and not to mention traveling across the state to do so. If it stays the way it is i think the need to put a 50 point mercy rule at halftime in this class. Who gains by being beat 75-7 every other week. Kids play hard but they are not seeing the satisfaction of being pounded on week in and week out. Then the following year they arent interested in football anymore. The kids loose in the end. This is high school football not college football. Why not put in the mercy rule.

response to sportsmaniac:

I think we all new that was probably going to happen to Dexter in that game. Norwich is an execellent football team and Dexter just isnt up to their caliber. This team only had 10 kids go out for football last year and they have better numbers this year but really arent used to winning. It wasnt always this way though Dexter used to be a playoff team every year in the late 80s and early 90s. Dexter was the first team in 4-6 years to beat power house Midway-Denton. Great school just lost some of the tradition.

Response to Cueball,

Dexter couldnt consolidate its football this year due to the district assignment. I believe they had to participate in their new district assignment signed last year for at least one year. Next year they will totally be consolidated with cedar vale in every sport.

Response to: KSTATEBBALLANDTRACK
Wow that is a fairly big statement to make about the coach who led them to the place to even play for first to start with. Also if you look at the team seated number one in the league right now the only teams that they have really played are all 0-5, I respect Veritas Christian but they have yet to really play anyone. If sunrise had been beaten by a larger margin I think maybe making a statement like, “I think they needed to adjust some play calling,” would be in order. But wow to essentially call for the coaches resignation on a public blog…no class.

our starting qb ben gottsch is hurt due to a fractured vertebrae so back up jacob fish is having a season he is sure not to forget. when fish settles down and plays the game he has all the intentions of being a great qb but with gottsch on the road to recovering the starting position will be up for competition. hillsboro has a solid team and our defense is well equipped with experienced linebackers and big defensive line. brandon brown had 18 tackles last game against sterling.
