Soccer: No. 1 vs. No. 2

Oct. 7, 2008 @ 11:24 a.m. by jlong

By J. Long

Here we go soccer fans. Rose Hill at Trinity, today at 4 p.m.

Rose Hill is the No. 1 ranked team in Class 4-1A, while Trinity is right behind them at No. 2. I love a No. 1 vs. No. 2 match-up.

This is Rose Hill’s chance to really show everyone just how good it is. The Rockets - the only undefeated team left in the state - are very fast and play with a very exciting, fast-pasted offensive attack. Austin Walls is one of the premiere offensive threats in the area. I wonder if yesterday’s storm has taken a toll on the Trinity field? The Knights are a very strong and are pretty physical. Their height and strength could give the Rockets some problems inside the box.

These match-up reminds me a lot of the Southeast-Kapaun rivalry in the City League. And if that is indeed the case, today’s match should be pretty good.

I’ve had this game circled in my calendar for quite some time. What other games should people be paying attention to today?

Is’nt the game being played at Stryker and not Trinity? For some reason I thought it was. Anyway could be a good game depending on the field conditions.

  2. rhsports says:

No, the game is at Trinity. I beleive Kapaun / Heights is at Stryker.
I hope the field is in good condition. Could be an equalizer for Trinity if the field is slow

  3. jjflash2b says:

Sorry, my bad! I looked at the catchitkansas listing of games and they have it listed being played at Stryker at 4:00 p.m. Just thought I’d throw that out there just in case. Don’t mean to screw anyone up on being late to the game.

  6. KSsoccerfan says:

    I say 6-0 Rose Hill
With two goals by Simmons, 3 goals by Walls, and 1 goal by some JV player because Rose Hill will so much in control of the game there will be no need for the varsity to play very long…

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  7. rhsports says:

Well, I’m as positive as anyone, but I don’t beleive it will be that one sided. Trinity wants this game very bad (as does Rose Hill) I think Rose Hill will win, but it will be more like 5-3 Rose Hill, I beleive.

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  8. KOking says:

i dont think they have a chance of scoring three, last time i checked, they have only been scored on three times ALL SEASON! i dont think treat will let any jv play tho… this is a big game, no time to put jv on there for a potential comeback, plus rose hill obviously likes the shutout (6 of them already this season)

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  9. KSsoccerfan says:

Weird on those 6 shutouts JV played in each one of those…
So chances are they will get younger guys with a lot of potential like Charles Blanchet in there for some experience…

    Go Rockets!

I played against Rose Hill personally. Not gonna lie they controlled the game with no doubt in my mind. They put our team to shame. I see RH coming out on top because of RH’s attack. Dominating their league in top scorers….

    At halftime 2-2.
Trinity is doing a great job taking care of its scoring chances. RH not so much. The Rockets have caught the Knights sleeping some on defense, but have been limited by solid play from Trinity’s Quentin Walters.

    Wow!

Memo to Rockets, they play soccer on the field not the discussion boards.

Congratulations on beating Elyria, Valley Center, Winfield, and the Derby JV this summer.

Just funnin you, you still have a good team, even if the players come from Derby, Augusta, and Germany. Remember, you’re never as good as you think you are and you’re never as bad as you think you are. Good luck the rest of the year.

  21. rocketfan1 says:

Congrats Trinity. You had one awesome goal scored from the midfield, sunk in right over the goalies head. The sideline ref, gave you two goals by not calling offsides. We have a great defense, but the ref has to make the call. They weren’t even close, totally offsides.
Trinity, I hope that your coach doesn’t coach you to play like you did tonight. Sportsmanship is a very important factor and you have NONE. Shoving, tripping, pushing….you did that very well to your advantage. It made a very dirty game.
Keep your heads up Rose Hill you are still number 1.

Sucks to see a great comeback by RH spoiled by a non-call on a CLEAR offsides. Wow. Keep the heads up Rockets, you played hard. Trinity is very physical, probably too much so. But kudos to them for playing their game, not RH’s. Some nice acting jobs too…

Anyone just dying to see a rematch? Perhaps at RH? I’m guessing RH would play tonight if they could. I feel very bad for Mulvane on Thursday, RH will be pissed and ready to 10 goal in the first half.

  24. Tom says:

Mr. Long…. what do you say? Was it offisdes or was it offisdes? Did it strike you as an overly physical game? It definatley was emotional. Trinity was super jacked.

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  25. KSsoccerfan says:

Obviously Trinity was a ridiculously dirty team. Shoving from behind and they couldn’t keep there mouths shut on the field. Everyone who watched that game knew that ball was offsides on there last goal…To bad the ref was to blind to see what everyone else did…
Could have been a great game to see in Overtime, instead Trinity lucked out on this one..

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  26. DrJay says:

Mr. Long……what do you say? Were the Rose Hill fans crying at the game like they are on this board? Trinity a dirty and physical team? Please, and you guys wanted to play 6A schools and MLS teams. Rocket fans give the Trinity boys some props because you’re definitely losing points with this kind of response to losing a tough and close game.

  27. Tom says:

hey… I gave em kudos… they did a great job playing their game instead of allowing RH to play theirs… kudos indeed.

I just we coulda seen OT. Would have been a classic game.

Also, I’d still like to see how they stack up to some 6A teams… what’s wrong with that?

That all said, there were some pretty distraught/angry/livid Rose Hill fans… but please don’t let a few nut jobs give all fans a bad name.

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  28. rocket mom says:

There’s no crying in soccer. And there is nothing wrong with being physical, but you should be playing the ball, the game, and not taking out the other players. We are lucky no one was injured tonite.

  30. J Long says:

I saw a great soccer game.

I was surprised at the number of people who came on here and were talking about a blowout. Not only were they saying it would be a blowout, but they were posting how many goals each player would score. That’s downright disrespectful.

As far as the play went, I think the officials missed calls on both teams. I said before the game that Trinity would be physical. However, I underestimated the speed of its defenders. I think that bothered Walls and the other Rocket forwards who are used to just running around people.

The wind blowing like it was really helped Trinity. The ball hung in the air a little more and when you’ve got a player like Chase Billings that is huge.

Great game. Both teams played hard. But in the end Trinity was the better team on Tuesday.

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  31. soccerfan04 says:

rose hill was every bit as physical as Trinity was…..by the way go to a college game some time and see how physical that is. If you really want to play at the next level you may want to see whats in store.

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  32. soccer fan 33 says:

DrJay you are downright disrespectful man…

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  33. Tom says:

I don’t think we got to see who the better team actually was…. we never got to overtime. The rest of the game aside, that non-call on the offsides was just ridiculous.

All respect to Trinity though, they’re tough and played well tonight. Refused to let Walls and Simmons behind them. Really exposed some holes in the Rockets. Coach Treat would tell you that too. But it’s okay, it just means the hype around a potential rematch will be even greater. Can’t wait to see how it plays out.

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  34. J Long says:

    For the record:

When I said disrespectful, I didn’t mean that in a you’re a horrible person kind of way.

I meant that if I was a player and you said you were going to beat my team and so and so would score this, and so and so would score that, I’d feel disrespected.

    That’s all.

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  35. Tom says:

yeah, i kinda think some Trinity players may have seen that…. they were awfully motivated tonight.

Never provide bulletin board material when you’re going on the road… whoops.

Keep up the good work here at Varsity Kansas, I love it.

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  36. socrfn2 says:

Well well, Rose Hill talks a big game but can’t finish the job, all I hear is whining on the part of the bad calls by referees. Let’s face it, you should never let your team even get in the position to lose a game by a bad call. By the way, Derby is still on a winning streak - now 10 games - defeating Salina South 3-1 tonight. Thursday’s game against Salina Central in Derby will be a great game and will determine the winner of AVCTL Div 1. Next time don’t talk trash about Derby as well as some other great teams in this area and maybe it won’t come back and bite you in the rear.

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  37. KOking says:

Rose Hill is still the better team, the wind and cheap shots determined this game…

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  38. KSsoccerfan says:

Exactly…Let Trinity play Rose Hill again. It doesn’t even have to be a Rose Hill, just at a real field. Maybe with some real refs. Possibly a game where ever 3 seconds Trinity isn’t shoving someone from behind… If Trinity gets matched up with Rose Hill again they will be in for a surprise. RH players want a re match…. If it’s in the state tourny or the regionals or whatever they will win when it matters…

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  39. KSsoccerfan says:

Whats dis respectful J Long is how the Trinity players couldn’t go 30 seconds with out some kind of cheap shot…

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  40. Soccerfan says:

If trinity made it a dirty game then Rose Hill should have answered back. Physical play is a key in soccer, even if the kids don’t like it. It changes games. Football players dont whine when they get cheap hit and so on. They come back and get the player with a clean hard tackle or have another play do the duty. Physical play from trinity was great. Id love to see them play Rose Hill again in a Physical match.

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  41. KSsoccerfan says:

Trinity went farther than a dirty game. It was outta hand. There coach should have told them to chill out. They were shovin people from behind. Not to mention Trinity has got to be the best actors ever, A guy would take a fall and be on the ground for 3 minutes then get up with a smile on his face cause he knows the call went his way… It’s to bad this game had to end on a terrible call by the ref..

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  42. Soccerfan says:

that happens in soccer KSsoccerfan. Do you watch professional soccer? players go down. Act like their hurt to get a call. It works, people might call you actors but you get the job done. All im saying is that physical play can get in highschool kids heads and take them out of the game. If you can get in a players head and the refs gives calls to the other team and not his, the player will get frustrated and can play bad. its all about using your brains in soccer.

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  43. 3rd party says:

I think that this game has made the rose hill players realize not every game will be a walk through even though i believe rose hill will come out more motivated and ready for the cheap kind of play that trinity has next time they play. Also the time wasting made me kind of disappointed, I mean if you have to resort to wasting time every dead ball and draining 10 minutes off the clock because you don’t want to risk a goal due to not having confidence i mean that makes the game boring to watch

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  44. 3rd party says:

Also soccer fan, i know what you mean by needing to be able to play with a bad ref but its puts a team at a great disadvantage when a player (trinity) is at least 3 strides offside (?) and the ref doesn’t make a call. Not much you can do there and its extremely unfair

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  45. KSsoccerfan says:

Well this isn’t pro soccer is it? Pretty much what your sayin is its ok for Trinity to cheap shot Rose Hill and not have a semi fair game? They couldn’t keep there mouths closed on the field either i could here them from the sideline. Say all you want but Trinity just plays out of hand dis respectful soccer. They need to learn how to play the game right…

This was the first time RH has been losing all season. They will start up another win streak, but this time it will end with a State Championship on there home field…

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  46. 3rd party says:

Im going to have to agree, even after seeing the game tonight i think that the rose hill squad has the more consistent team and all around what it takes to go all the way

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  47. Soccerfan says:

Im not saying its right, but if they get away with it so be it. I played at maize at 6A school. We were taught to battle hard, if you commit a cheap foul, dont over do it to get kicked out of the game. Id like to see a trinity or rose hill play a 6a team or maize. Like i said, battling and playing physical can change a game. Most refs will let physical play go on to an extent. So the rose hill kids should have said to them selves, “guys we need to go out their and show trinity we can play physical and knock them one and win the game”. But they rather complain about cheap shots and the ref..

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  48. 3rd party says:

If you were there then you would know that rose hill did play a physical game they just didnt get involved with all the hacking and dirty play. If your saying thats what it takes to win then i think you need to relook the way you were/are being coached and taught because a team like rose hill that works the ball this well does not have to play cheap to get a win

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  49. Hawks Rock says:

Not all soccer sides are graceful and talented as some manage to be in high school. Those teams have to resort to aggressive play and determination to win. I didn’t see the game, but sometimes, aggresiveness can be miscontrued as dirty. If the ref lets the overly aggressive play go, then it is his fault for letting it happen. A ref has to keep a tight reign on super aggresive players so it doesn’t escalate into a free-for-all, which results in someone getting hurt. Rose Hill won’t die because of this loss. They should take the good things and run with it, and use the knowledge to prepare for similiar teams, and maybe even Trinity again, in the future.

  50. ICTSoccerFAN says:

What a blog….emotions, emotions, emotions. i did not see the game, but, after reading this blog, I feel like I did. Faking an injury is part of the game! So is bad officiating!! Welcome to soccer! If the referee missed an OFFSIDE(soccer), not offsides(football), call and it cost a team a goal, that really sucks! However, a referee usually doesn’t keep the ball from finding the back of the net. Moral of the story, if you score enough goals in a match, a missed offside call that results in a goal will not hurt as much! I will definately not miss a rematch between these two teams. Gotta love the #1 vs. #2 games like J Long says!

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  51. FootballFan says:

Faking an injury is not part of the game. That is why they issue yellow cards for it. People get by with it, but they shouldn’t.

Hey KSsoccerfan and whomever the blowme kid is. You got a little too big for your britches in talking smack. It’s too bad you had to go run your mouths and too bad for true RHS fans and players that you did! You lost, so quit whinning, accept it. No team is unbeatable, especially when people like you motivate other teams to beat you. Keep talk’in and you just might keep losing. I know as a player your talk is all it would have taken for me to go bust ya in the chops! The wind, field, blades of grass, sun, moon and the stars and of course the refs didn’t beat you, you just lost to a better team for that particular day. Sorry for your loss.

I was shocked to hear RH lost but like everyone on here has already commented on thinking your on top and being on top like Rose Hill is puts a big bullseye on ur back even if you guys are the most talented team lesser opposition teams are going to come in and play there hearts out just because your on top, so cut out the smack talk and predicting whos going to score and just play the game because talking crap will come back to bite you in the butt like it did last night.

  55. jjflash2b says:

Hey, to the RHS fan who keeps changing his post name. I know it’s hard to be humble, especially when you’re young and cocky, but you brought a lot of this on yourself and your team by talking trash. Talk is cheap and if you can’t back up your bulletin board material then you just need to keep quiet. Life is full of hard lessons and you just learned one! RHS is a good team and hopefully learned that if you let any team keep it close, which by you and a host of your other posted names said it was impossible for Trinity to even be in the game, have a chance of losing. Anyway hope you learned your lesson. In my estimation RHS will still be in the state 1-4A state championship game.

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  56. DrJay says:

Rose Hill fans complaining about poor soccer officiating, which cost them the game? Thats like going to Walmart and complaining about all the NASCAR apparel and mullets. It’s a given baby. Any of you teams that lose a match just use the Rose Hill Doctrine and blame it on the bad officiating.

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  57. rhsports says:

Rose Hill did NOT, let me repeat NOT lose this game due to bad officiating. They lost this game because they surrendered 5 goals while only scoring 4, the rest is just details. No one single play/call/non-call decided this game. Bad calls are part of every game, in all most every sport, and very rarely does a call/non-call cost a team a game. Give both teams credit for a hard fought match and on this night, Trinity was the better team. If both teams continue to excel at the level they played at last night, they will most likely meet again very soon, I for one will pay to see that rematch.

Dear RH FANS. You say that we have no sportsmanship, when 1 of your parents came over after you tied it 4-4 and waved his pointer fingers in the air at our student section. Not to mention all the players i heard cussing out our players so next time you say something look at your self and just dont say it.

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  59. StrongSupporter says:

Except for the fact that your players were cursing just as much. You talk about us being cocky when #4 for trinity was easily the cockiest person on that field. I watched the game over again today and saw at least 3!!! plays that were just ridiculously obvious and should have been straight red cards. You complain about 17 diving when he was one player and trinity’s whole team was diving so maybe you should think before you say something

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  60. Rose Hill says:

I don’t know who it is running their mouths on this board, but its ridiculous. If its the players then you know better. If its not then you need to shut up, because your getting your friends and classmates hacked. Clean it up a little, we’re good and we expect to win. But its not a great idea to fire up the second ranked team in the state, even if you are…or were the first.

OH and not to metion the heard of parents cussing and yelling at the line judge. 63. rocket mom says:

Trinity, since your game I have had the privladge of talking to many of your previous opponents and it seems to be conclusive that the only way you can win is to hack and cheat your way through a game. We have had several positive comments by opposing teams about how nice it is to get beat by talent. Truth is I have watched many professional matches including one tonight where a guy got a red card for a minor tripping when I watched you try to trip my son every chance you had, yet you claim that’s soccer!!! A team with real talent can keep the ball away from another team and never have to become physical but that dosn’t work when officials will let you get away with anything to get the ball. ENOUGH SAID.

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  64. StrongSupporter says:

so i dont know if u realize this but umm not a single player from our team said we were going to 10 goal you so ur shot down on that one and just whatever we will see who is the better team when we meet again in post season since i have a strong belief you guys will hack your way to us…
