Maize WR Brett Soft out for the season

I love this blog. Have I said it before? I first heard about Soft’s injury here, and I checked it out (also got an e-mail from a consistent poster as a heads-up).

Sadly, it’s true. Brett Soft, a senior at Maize who has played wide receiver and free safety and punter and returner this season, suffered a leg injury Friday against Derby. Soft had a state record 1,422 receiving yards last season.

I talked to him and his mom today.

Gail Soft was a little emotional talking about the injury because, as she explained, it’s hard to see one of your children sick or injured. But she told me how it happened and what’s been up this week.

“The X-ray showed he broke his fibula. What happened, when he got hit, the Derby player tackled our quarterback and his momentum swung him around. He caught Bub (Brett Soft) in the ankle and moved one of the bones over about an inch. He has two pins in it.”

Soft had surgery on Monday and is home now. He hopes to be back in school on Thursday.

The first X-ray “showed the fibula was broken way up high,” Gail Soft said. “They couldn’t figure it out. It doesn’t look right. His ankle was swollen and puffy…. he had more X-rays and they could see it had shifted. The fibula is such a thin bone that it moved over and it splintered all the way up. We got him a wheelchair because he can’t put pressure on it. He can’t use it at all for at least two weeks.”

The Softs know all about injuries. Brett’s sister, Micki, tore an ACL before her senior season and missed the whole year. And his other sister, Casey, tore an ACL two games into her season at Hutch juco. She rehabbed, came back and tore the other one the first game of the next season.

I then talked to Brett, who was struggling with the reality of his season being over.

He’s hoping to back back at the beginning of basketball season, but he knows that probably won’t happen. Maybe mid-season. He said he’s very depressing and he’s still in some pain.

As for college, “I really don’t know right now. I’m hoping that whatever, five games, I’ve got are good enough to get me somewhere. I’m mostly getting really hard looks at jucos and D-IIs around Kansas. There are a couple D-Is looking at me. I hope those five games are good enough to get me D-1.

I have been watching this kid play FB and BB since he was an 8th grader and I can honestly say that I have never seen someone play with the same kind of passion, aggression and heart and he does. I cannot see how he is not getting much in the way of DI looks and my bet is there are alot of schools who are going to be sorry they let him get away.

Good Luck Brett…look forward to seeing you in #33 come BB mid-season!! Keep the faith!!

Terribly sorry to hear this about Brett. He is an incredible athlete. Keep your chin up kid. Good things will still be in store for you.

brett i am surprised to hear u r not getting more d-1 looks.if u go juco go to butler county, they have several seniors that will be going there. u guys would have a good chance of a natl title and then u will get plenty of d-1 offers.

  8. Travis says:

It’s a shame he’s going to miss the rest of the season. He was clearly a top player in the state. Against Hutch he only had about 3 catches, but had 3 interceptions, and kept the Hutch offense pinned deep in its own territory all night with his punts. Maize is losing a very talented player.

Nothing wrong with going D-II or Juco. My son started Juco and went on to D-II and had a great college experience and lots of playing time.

Maize coach tried to do to much with Soft, wore him down and got him injured. don’t know if Soft stands a chance now to improve his speed now that he has injury but i have heard that his speed is why he is not getting d-1 looks. Soft was a loose cannon in the past hopefully he has matured.good luck to him rehabbing and in the future.

I’ve talked with both Bret and his dad. Just good folks.

Maize coach did NOT get him injured. That’s weak and uninformed.

  13. MHS football dad says:

nobody wanted to see Bret or any other player get hurt but it now forces the coaching staff to open up their game plan and give other players the chance they might never havt gotten before.

RikRok - I guess you never sat in the stands by Brets dad during a MHS football game.

  16. Maizeeagle says:

I play for Maize, not going to say who I am.

-Soft worked his butt off everyday in practice, he might not have a fast 40, but he is such a fluid reciever, and his speed in the 40 doesn’t show at all his speed running routes.

-It’s BS if he doesn’t get to go D-1, he’s the best player by far I’ve ever played against (been layed out a few times by him), and frankly he might be a better safety than he is reciever.

-He’s an great all around player, and we’ll miss him, but we have guys stepping up to fill in his role.

I can’t believe with how hard KU is recruiting receivers they wouldn’t offer an in-state record holder by now. Scouts don’t think he has much speed, but he’s one heck of a football player, does he remind anybody else of Jordy Nelson?

  20. Derby says:

    Brett is a good receiver

he should go D-1, hes the Best reciever in the State next to the Derby ones(just playing, i gotta give our guys love too)

but why no discussion about derby football???

Brett is a great kid as well as athlete.I have heard all the stuff about his speed and how Kansas and Kansas State want kids with more size but this kid is good and been proving it for 2 years. I know he has schools interested and he will make full recovery from this .

Really Hovey? You go to ALL Maize events so you can tell us all without a doubt that Ron Soft isn’t never sits in the stands and yells. Most Maize fans can tell you differently.

  30. Good Grief says:

Okay - Joanna wrote a great article on Bubba and his injury. Why in the heck do some of you insist on posting comments about his DAD?? This isn’t about his dad, its about a GREAT kid, that has endured something that all of us wish would have not happened. I understand it’s a blog, but don’t you think that MAYBE Bubba will get on and read this. Not sure reading comments about how people feel about his dad, will make him feel any better.
As a wife of a coach, I always tell people, I don’t care what you think or what you say, just have enough respect to not say it to where the children/child can hear or read.
GOOD LUCK BUBBA-you’re an awesome kid and have work ethic that coaches would love every player to have. As for as recruitment, any coach in this COUNTRY would be blessed to have such a fine athlete and leader.

Both times I’ve visited with him during games he has been sitting at the picnic tables. Whatever dude. But if you want to quote me, do it right.

Good luck Bret. You know where to get ahold of me and it won’t be on here with these idiots.

Bubba Soft can play D I anytime. He’s fast and has great size and great hands for a big man. In 2 years he will have more body mass and make a great tight end. His punting skills alone can get him a D I position.

    Good luck Bubba.

  35. Football Fan says:

I have seen Soft play a few times and think he is a good player. He makes plays on offense and defense but I must admit I really don’t know what D-1 coaches and scouts look for. Why no D-1 offers?

  36. FB Mom says:

    I guess I don’t understand.
If Brett is already being offered scholarships then accept one. My son is at a 4A school. He is a good student and a good player and has worked his tail off for 4 years and hasn’t received any offers yet.
We would be so excited if someone offered him a scholarship to play football anywhere.

  37. maizeeagle says:

Brett had potential to go to KU or KSU, and he was getting intrest from Colorado State, Duke, and Texas Tech.

His offers were from Emporia and Fort Hays.

What would you rather do, wait to see if Texas Tech offers? or go to Fort Hays without exploring your options?

FB MOM??? I hope you are really not a mom and are just simply giving a silly screen name. If so, I am sorry for you. Why would any mom make a post to say “if he is so good, what are the other schools waiting for?” Maybe you haven’t seen good??? Curious to know which 4A school you son plays for.

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  40. Maizeeagle says:

He isn’t exactly Reggie Bush and being recruited by USC, Ohio State, Miami, Illinois, and Florida.

A lot of other schools want to see how he does his senior year, and then offer.

Come on, you obviously don’t know anything about the recruiting process FB Mom, don’t act like you do.

  42. FB Mom says:

Yes, I am a mom asking a legitimate question.
I want to know why, if this kid is as good as you all say he is, what are the D1 colleges waiting for? Why wouldn’t they jump on him right away? I am not saying he is not good, I just want to understand from the colleges perspective.
I know many other fb playes in they area have been offered D1 scholarships last summer so it just doesn’t make sense to me, that’s all.
I am not claiming to know anything about the recruiting process, I am just trying to understand it.
