The inside scoop on Kansas high school sports.

Friday’s recap (10-10)

Another fantastic night of football. Don’t you just love high school football? Wow. You never know what might happen. One night after North beats Southeast in double overtime, we see Derby come back from a 28-point deficit to beat host Salina South. It does not get any better than that.

Derby defeats Salina South 43-42 (I called this). From the Salina Journal, Arne Green hooked us up with a story.

Even though Salina South scored seven touchdowns, had 448 offensive yards and led by 21 in the fourth quarter — Derby won. Derby scored 22 points in the final 7 1/2 minutes. It was the fourth time Derby rallied to win a game.

Aaron Wilson had 244 rushing yards and scored with 47 seconds remaining.

Wellington defeats Rose Hill 14-13 (I picked Rose Hill) — Wellington pretty much won the game on two plays, a 43-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Edwards to Heath Carrol (in the third quarter). The one that won it form them was an 80-yard TD pass to Sage Aguilar. Wellington ran the same play back-to-back. It was a play-action pass and Edwards threw an incomplete pass and Aguilar was wide open. Edwards ran it the same way on the next play and hit Aguilar for the TD with 6 minutes remaining.

Rose Hill was up 13-0 at the half. Wellington had 10 possessions; the Crusaders scored on two and the other eight they had 58 yards on 32 plays.

Garden Plain defeats W. Trinity 41-21 (I called this): From correspondent Matt Browning. Garden Plain scored 35 points on 26 plays in the first half. In the first half, the Owls held Trinity to 66 yards and forced two turnovers. Daniel Capul led the game with a 92-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

Andover defeats Pittsburg 13-9 (I called this). From Travis Richardson: Pittsburg had five red-zone opportunites and Andover forced three three-and-outs. Andover’s Alex Croituru blocked a field goal and intercepted a pass. On the blocked field goal, he blocked it and Andover’s Ben Riedel picked it up and fumbled it on the return, giving the ball back to Pittsburg. But Andover forced Pitt into another 3-and-out.

Andover’s offense was Jason Hoover, who had 118 yards on 23 carries, including a 47-yard touchdown run with eight minutes remaining for the 13-9 final. Aaron Hansen had 58 passing yards.

Bishop Carroll 36, Kapaun 28 (I called this). From Jonathan Long: Blake Bell was his usual self, 350 yards, two TDs rushing, two TDs passing. He hit Nick Johansen 11 times for 185 yards. Kapaun put up a great fight, but the Crusaders played from behind the whole game. Kapaun quarterback Ben VinZant was 14 of 22 for 185, he had two rushing touchdowns and one passing.

East 54, West 0 (I called this. Shocking. I know). Bryce Brown ran for 274 on 13 carries. Look, for anyone saying that he’s not as great as Blake Bell or not as great as he was, here’s my response: He’s been doing this consistently for three years now. The kid’s a stud. So is Bell, but I think we’re all wide-eyed over Bell, while it’s old hat to us for Brown to be kicking everyone’s tails.

Northwest 35, Garden City 13 (I called this). Demarcus Robinson had 220 rushing yards on 28 carries and three touchdowns for Northwest.

Andale 76, Kingman 6 (I called this.)

Buhler 36, Mulvane 21(I called this.) Mulvane QB Jordan Gosch had 312 passing yards, two touchdowns passing, one rushing. Buhler was led by Jorden Oden’s 190 rushing yards.

Hutchinson 42, Goddard 0 (I called this). Goddard 0-6. Oof.

Newton 61, Pratt 35(I called this). Nathaniel Martens had 251 rushing for Newton.

In the rest of the state, Blue Valley beat 5A’s No. 1-ranked St. Thomas Aquinas 31-7.

How in the heck can Jordan Gosch have 312 passing yards and still loose the game? Is Jordan the only one on the team?
    How many rushing?

  2. Hawks Rock says:

Sad thing for Buhler is that Andale is coming to town, and they likely will not have Jordan Oden to play at RB. Separated shoulder 5 minutes before halftime. He got 193 yards in one half (minus 5 minutes). They really need him in there to challenge the good teams.

Kapaun staff, FYI: give Knox the ball in open space and let him make plays. What are you guys waiting for. He’s the best athlete on the team.

Joanna, did Chris Harper get moved to WR? I saw he led Oregon in receiving against UCLA. (2 catches 25 yards and 1 TD)

  5. Browns99 says:

What’s going on with the football program at Goddard this year? Everythng seems to have imploded from the 1st game and has gotten progressively worse each game. I have watched Goddard for the last 8-10 years and saw them go through some tough times but the program was getting much better over the last 4 years. They have some good athletes out there but there doesn’t seem to be any enthusiasm from the players. The offense just runs three or four basic plays and doesn’t even challenge the defense. The defense puts 8 men in the box and stuffs the run. I see no one who even resembles a wide receiver and no urgency on the part of the coaching staff to change anything. Is it the players who don’t care or is it the coaches who refuse to admit that the game plan just doesn’t work if you don’t have right personnel to run it? I think that the coaching staff needs to take a long hard look in the mirror and admit that drastic changes are needed. Do they need a new game plan or new coaching staff? Any comments?

  7. Derby Dad says:

Yes Brown99 Goddard is no more. They ( like this years Derby team) groomed last years Seniors ( this years Derby Seniors) and once they were gone so was the talent. Derby will be lucky to pull together 2 wins in the AVCTL next season. Bad for you Brown99 is that Goddard will probably be one of those two wins. Last years Goddard, like this years Derby, played their starters until late, very late, in the game even in blow outs. Not developing the under classmen They say you can measure a coaching staff by how well the team performs without the super stars. Well observe this years Goddard. Enough said. But Derby can enjoy the rest of this season more than likely well into the playoffs. Can they beat the large and powerful Junction City or the explosive Olathe teams? What we can enjoy are the matchups and possible matchups still ahead. heights/Derby, possibly BC/Hutch, MacPherson/Hutch, East/Heights, Derby/East. Yes the Derby/East game will be a good one maybe East fans will quit crying about flags thrown last year. hey East fan I have the DVD of that game want to watch it??? You still commit the fouls and you still lose. Enjoy Brown and Byers a few more weeks because after that it will be much of the same o, same o for the Aces prior to the Brown brothers playing.

  8. Derby Dad says:

By the way let me send out congrats to BC and Northwest for making state. Oh I am a few weeks early?? Hardly. look at the joke of a district they each play in this year. Can you say cake walk?? Only question for those two teams is how many yards rushing the cheerleaders will get each week. I forgot to tell brown99 that Goddards district is down this year so If their Coach will throw the ball Goddard may have a chance to actually make the state playoffs. Maize, Dodge are down and Garden has been inconsistant so good luck. Then it is back into the fire though. But hey a 2-7 district runnerup is still a district runnerup. Woooo Hoooo.

  9. Big B says:

Derby dad-at least your fair. Before you dog East at the end of your post you dog your own team by saying they will only get 2 wins next year. I’m sure all the current juniors and soph. on Derby appreciate your confidence. I had been told Coach Clark was better than that but I guess you don’t think so.

  10. obssesed says:

Hawks Rock - Will Andale take state this year? I think the way Andover has been playing they have a pretty good chance.
Really hate to see Jordan get hurt, he’s a dang good RB.
A good RB can make a world of difference.
Take Mulvane for instance, loosing Huldon Tharp.
They go from 11-1 to 3-3. Could Buhler end up in the same boat?
Mulvanes my team, I would liked to have seen them win at Buhler.
But their defense is lacking and they have only average RBs.
They had a total of -17 rushing (might be a little below Avg.). With Jordan Oden having 193 before the half had he not gotten hurt he very well could have racked up 400.
I don’t know if loosing Huldon is entirely what happened to Mulvane, but they are certanily not the team they were. With Jordan in I think Buhler would have a good chance of taking Andale.
    Could still happen.

Panthers dont belive what Derby dad said. Good luck. And I will be there next year too. Go Panthers

  12. Derby Dad says:

Oldtime I didn’t say I wouldn’t be there. Heck I have sat through the thick and the thin I am just stating what is fact. I was there in the 70’s when Derby played Bishop Meige in the mud. When Derby Played a Southeast team on a Nov 1st with Ice everywhere. From Jim Davies to Brandon Clark I have watched each Coach and his plans either succeed or fail.Tell me what the JV record is this year. Tell me who is getting the playing time this year from the underclassmen to prove me wrong. This years Seniors have played for three years over the past two years Jr’s and Seniors. They have basically been groomed for this years peak. I would Love to be wrong and I don’t mean any dis-respect to the young underclassmen who strap it on every day. I just have not heard or seen anything to make me believe otherwise. And I hope Brandon doesn’t jump to the next level I am just saying I would not be surprised to see him use this success to move on.

  13. N2Sports says:

Brown99, The reason you don’t see anyone that resembles a WR at Goddard is that they have only thrown his way 4 times in the last 4 games. The results of that have been 3 catches & 1 defensive pass interference call.
You can’t blame the kid when you are getting blown out by 40 every game & he only get’s 1 opportunity to make a play.
By the way, the linebackers make great tackles 8 yards down field and the Dbacks haven’t covered anyone all year.
Look at the play calling & you’ll have a better understanding of the problem. 3rd and long and they run a dive right into those 8 guys in the box.
The kids have given up on a coach that has given up on them.

  14. vonerich2000 says:

Goddard’s quarterbacks threw 3 interceptions against Hutch friday night and missed their receivers by 5 yards all night. That is why they don’t throw. If Derby’s JV squad is any indication it might be a rough 2009 season for the Panthers. However, kids grow and get better so these teams the 2009 Derby and Goddard teams might show everyone something.

I remember playing in that ice game vs Southeast. Remember when the lights went out due to the space heaters tripping the circuits?

    Good times.

I couldn’t believe the Panthers came back Friday. I turned the game off when they went down 42-21. That will teach me.

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  16. Derby Dad says:

Yeah I remember the lights going out and people pulling cars up on the northeast corner turning their lights on. And the band freezing their rears off befoe the game. The guy that was supposed to sing the national anthem was late so the crowd sang it. Then he showed up and it was sung again LOL. I was alot warmer than you poor guys playing the game as I was snuggled in my 40 below sleeping bag LOL. I wish these young kids could have seen Billy Campfield run. You only see speed like that every so often. Also the only Derby running back to play in the NFL for the Eagles.

  17. Derby Dad says:

Old school “you turned the game Off? Shame on you LOL. I had to work late so I couldn’t go but I listened to every play. Watching the news it almost looked like Salina purposefully snapped the ball over the punters head to get the safety and out of their end zone. If someone was there and can enlighten me I was very curious about the safety. It didn’t look like the punter made much effort to go back and get it from the TV replay on the news.

  18. Derby Dad says:

I do wish Doyle would get better at his play by play. His ” still on his feet-still on his feet” doesn’t tell you If he is on his feet for 2 yds or twenty two yards. I do appreciate the coverage but alittle less emotion and more information would be nice. But haven’t been in his shoes so I don’t want to complain to much.

  19. Gamer says:

N2Sports, what WR were you talking about at goddard?

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  20. N2Sports says:

#31 has started since Derby, he was thrown to once and made a diving, one handed 2 yard catch. In the Salina South game he was thrown to twice. The starting QB threw to him once, it was a wopping 3 yard pass and he was hit immediately, the back up QB threw him a 37 yarder that he had to come back to get, he was thrown to once in the Hutch game & drew the interference call. 4 passes, 4 reasonably positive plays, if you can call a 2 & 3 yard pass to your WR positive when you are down by 30.

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  21. vonerich2000 says:

and he drew the interference call when the ball had already been thrown behind him 10 yards. Goddard has some developing talent. The offense just didn’t look in synch. Some of that credit has to go to the Hutch defense, but I question some of Goddard’s play calling.

  22. zebra stripes says:

fyi in high school pass interference can and is called anytime the reciever is interfered with from the moment the ball leaves the hand of the qb until the moment the ball hits the ground or is caught. there is no such thing as uncatchable in high school.

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  23. N2Sports says:

It was previously stated that “I see no one who even resembles a wide receiver”. All I’m doing is defending this kid, it’s hard to make plays when you only get the opportunity to make one as a WR once a game, regardless of where the ball is thrown. I’ve been questioning play calling since last year.

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  24. Gamer says:

sounds like ya have been avidly keepin that stats on that kid N2. hopefully goddard can pull out a couple wins in district and get back on the right track.

  25. Insulin Army says:

I too played in the ice game, Nov. 1, 1991–most fun game I ever played in. Then again, it was always fun sticking it to SE. Districts were much easier for Derby then, having West and South as the other two opponents. Won’t be so easy this year, Heights is legit and will be tough to beat. And if they can’t move the ball against East, there will be problems. Derby’s been succeptible to the big play this year, which makes Brown even more dangerous. And SE is no pushover, notwithstanding its last two games.

  26. N2Sports says:

Gamer, I’m keeping track of all of the position players comparing rushes vs passes, yardage etc. because I love offense and I believe the talent is there in all of those positions.

  27. fball guy says:

I think derby will be just fine next year despite losing Langworthy Westmoreland and Molhoek on the O- line as well as Wilson And Snodgrass. They return a good portion of their back seven on D, they also have a good crop of soph. and junior receivers and have 2 hardnosed rb’s. The d-line is undersized but they all have motors and are quick and scrappy. The Jv qb has a strong and accurate arm, but is not as good a runner as Snodgrass. One more year in the system will help him immensely with his reads and command of the offense.

DerbyDad, instead of waving your DVD in front of your monitor, why don’t you put some of that video on YouTube for ALL to see what you saw in last year’s East game. I have video too and would like to compare it to the view from the other side. If you were one of the refs, of course the penalties were still committed in your eyes because you saw what you wanted to see (green). I would especially like to see the “chop block” in OT. Also, the penalty at the end of the first half by the East defense so that Derby runs one more play with ZERO seconds. During regulation, why don’t you count how many TDs were called back. I counted at least three.

  29. ProudDad says:

Browns99, I’d say you have Goddard figured out pretty well. The success of the Goddard teams depends on the ability of the players to outplay their coaches. Last year they could. This year they can’t. But last year’s players had no more respect for the coaching than this year’s (this isn’t true of all the coaches, but it starts from the top). We keep running the same plays that don’t work. They only worked last year because Watkins could run himself out of trouble. We’ve heard opposing fans say that they could tell what plays we were going to run. Mishandling of players has drained the love of the game out of them. They’ve thought about quitting for weeks but stick it out for each other. A starting OT quit before the Hutch game, so we lost 80 lbs. off our starting O line.

Interestingly, Goddard’s freshmen beat Hutch last night for the 1st time ever.

Regarding Derby, it’s interesting that we haven’t heard much from the huffers and blowers that predicted a blowout. They nearly got blown out themselves. Derby obviously know how to win though. Congratulations on pulling it out. However, against the 3 good teams they’ve played this year, they have a combined winning margin of 5 points. That requires a combination of skill and luck (favorable calls, opponent miscues, and reliance on big plays) which I don’t expect will last through more than a couple of rounds in playoffs.

  33. Derby Dad says:

fball guy you are right you lose Snodgrass and Wilson and langworthy, westyand mohlhoek. However you also lose Dunham, Chase, Sparks, and Nichols. And several on a defense that already has shown some weakness. The JV QB you speak of may be tall but he doesn’t make the quick decisions as Jake does and does not have the legs. I would love to be wrong, that the Panthers will just reload and be as strong. Losing 9 starters on any offense along with
transfer Hyde who was a second string backup at receiver will weaken any team.

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  34. fball guy says:

    Derby Dad-

No doubt, they wont be as strong as this years team. I was merely pointing out to vonerich that next years team does not have as bleak an outlook as he would like to forecast. I am not predicting a 7 or 8 win season, but they wont be goddard like. Also your assessment of the jv qb was essentially the same as mine. However, give the kid another year in the system to improve his reads and understanding of the system which, I believe, clark will tweak to play to the teams strength.
