Volleyball discussion (10-15)

Oct. 15, 2008 @ 7:00 a.m. by Joanna

by joanna

I was in Wellington last night for the best night of volleyball I’ve seen this season — Clearwater swept the quad, beating Circle (in three), Andover and Wellington). Andover’s only loss was to Clearwater in an outstanding match that went 26-24, 28-26. This was wonderful volleyball, with good setting, exciting play at the net, good passing. I was loving it.

Did you see a match last night? Who impressed you?

Andover is loaded with athletes — I especially enjoyed watching Sabra Clark, Haley Dotson and Rebecca Dinsmore. Clearwater’s Melanie Brockleman and Tricia Vogel and Ashton Watt were talented, as well. Circle is definitely a young team, but that’s a team that could make problems in the postseason because what does this team have to fear? Not many expect much from this team, but there’s way too  good of tradition here to ignore the T-Birds.

    Joanna,
Thank you so much for coming to the Clearwatre quad last night! I knew it would be worth the drive! Loads of talent and the best volleyball! What more could you ask for? I do want to bring up the fact that Andover and Clearwater are both in the same 4A SUB-STATE! They are 1-1 against each other so it should be another great match up. However, both teams went to State last year and I think they both deserve a shot at State this year but only one will come out of SUB-STATE! This truely makes me sad! Including St. James Academy 4A volleyball is the best in the state HANDS DOWN!!!

I’m really hoping others called in scores from their matches and they just haven’t been posted yet…

At any rate, congrats to Clearwater on the big win!

  4. Joanna says:

I wrote about Cheney on Tuesday and the Cardinals’ undefeated record. Well, the Cards lost last night to Independent. Good win for Independent, a team I had written about last week.

i saw some good things out of South High Volleyball last night( they won 1 match and lost 1 match.. but they are young and have what i beleive is a bright future for the next few years. GO TITANS

  6. salman says:

Good one in Salina lastnight with the crosstown rivals, South and Central. Central pulled it off in three with the last one ending 31-29. Maize beat Central and South beat Maize. Central played like they wanted to win.

  7. vbfan says:

Hesston beat both Wichita Collegiate and Hillsboro in some great matches! (I don’t have scores) It was a double-dual, Collegiate and Hillsboro both beat Smoky Valley as well.

  8. Volleyball says:

I was at Douglas and saw Independent beat Cheney in two. Garden Plain then beat Independent in three. I believe that Garden Plain, Independent and Cheney all beat Douglas in two. Cheney and Garden Plain did not play last night but are set for a rematch in Garden Plain on Tuesday. Not sure but I think that Garden Plain is now 31-3.

  9. ict_egall says:

Carroll beat both Northwest and North in 2 games each at North. North beat Northwest in a nailbiter again 25-23, 18-25, 25-23, making a three-way tie for 3rd place in the City for now … NW, KMC and North all at 9-5, assuming KMC lost to league-leader Heights and beat West last night. Not sure though, since there’s nothing in the WICHITA eagle about volleyball in town.

  10. Joanna says:

ict-egall — I think you are calling me out for covering something outside the City League.
Yes, Wichita is in my newspaper’s name, but do you know that a large number of the paper’s subscribers come from outside the city limits? And do you know that towns like Andover and Maize have Wichita kids in their districts?

To be honest, I’m just not going to cover every City League match when it’s obvious that there are some outstanding teams in the area.

  11. Hovpen says:

Year in and year out, the AV-CTL Division 3 and 4 (4A) volleyball teams display some of the best volleyball in the region. Competition among those schools is always intense, and always a pleasure to watch.

What about Clearwater’s senior libero Kaitlin Stearns and senior middle Amanda Newlin, I’ve been told they had a pretty good night last night in the Andover match.

  15. ict_egall says:

Not calling you out for covering volleyball in the area. I’m glad to see any coverage of volleyball. The girls get such little coverage in the Wichita area as it is. I enjoy reading about the other area teams, also. Just would be nice to get scores on the games in the city of Wichita reported in the paper that I subscribe to on a daily/timely basis.

  16. Joanna says:

ict_egall, I’m not sure what’s going on with the City League scores. I asked my boss today if he knew if the scores were being called in too late or what it was.

  17. ripit says:

as a coach I call in all scores the night of the event prior to 10pm. i guess the writers are choosing not to post them.

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  18. Joanna says:

ripit — do you really think that the writers — I’m guessing that’s referring to me, considering I’m the only writer who covers high school volleyball as a beat — say that we’re just not going to print the scores? I’m out covering volleyball, not saying who do I not want in the paper. If it were up to me, I’d run everything possible just so there’d never be any complaints.
I’ve sent a message to my boss about this subject. But really, I’m not here to try to screw anyone over. No matter who you are.

  19. catbackerksu says:

I think the best solution to the problem of getting scores (and standings) out to the public is for each league to either provide a league website - or use an existing web site (such as maxpreps) to post their results to. This way instead of coaches/AD’s calling scores into multiple media outlets they just post them at one location and then anyone can go check all results/standings in one place.

  20. OrioleFan says:

The long and short of it is this: If you want your teams’ scores in the paper, you have to report them to the Eagle. It’s not like Joanna can call every coach and ask if they won or not…

“that guy” .. you are correct … South High seems to be changing direction of the program. They are young and playing some good teams pretty tough.
