So do we have to wait until tomorrow for the other all league teams???

  2. Joanna says:

Done, vbfan. But you have to wait for All-Metro.

  3. vbfan says:

    Thanks!

Do you know how most leagues vote on these teams? I know they are done by the coaches - but does each coach pick a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd team with point values assigned for each or does each coach just pick a 1st team? Are they allowed to vote for players on their own teams or just make nominations from their own teams?

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  4. Joanna says:

When we were running the All-City League teams before we started All-Metro, coaches nominated their players but could not vote for their own players.
There was a first and second team picked and anyone received a vote was honorable mention. First team votes got 10 points, while second team votes got 5 (or something like that — it’s been awhile).

  5. ahsfan says:

    How is All-Metro decided?

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  6. Joanna says:

I send out surveys to all the coaches in the three-county area and then they nominate their own players and other players. I tally the votes, I talk to coaches and I go by what I’ve seen and then I make the decision.
I choose either two setters, four hitters and a libero/defensive specialist. Or I’ve gone five hitters, one setter and a libero/defensive specialist.

  7. ahsfan says:

How does it happen that a player is 1st team League, MVP and a D-1 athlete, but does not make the All-Metro team?

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  8. Joanna says:

ahsfan — I feel very comfortable with the seven players on this all-metro volleyball team. I believe that there are two outstanding setters, four outstanding hitters and one outstanding libero. Were there other candidates that I considered closely? That I talked to others about? Most definitely.
But these are the seven that I chose, based on nominations, based on votes. It’s a great group.
Are there others that will feel someone else should have been on the team? Of course. Anyone can feel free to debate who’s been chosen, who you would have chosen (all without being negative to a player, please.)

  9. luvvb says:

Do you happen to have South Central Border League all league teams?

  10. vbattack says:

ahsfan: these “All Metro” selections never make sense. (in any sport) lol There have been many times when ALL STATE players have not made it and some second team 3A player does. I am sure that the “EAGLE” chosen girls are good players though. But it IS primarily based on writers opinions, they may hear coaches suggestions but that definately doesnt mean they listen :) All State will be out soon and that is the list that shows how it really is with an un-biased selection.

  11. volleyit says:

I have to agree with vbattack and ahsfan. The MCAA had only two UNANIMOUS selections, Dakota Kaufman and Dominique Chew. Dakota would not be considered for All-Metro due to her location, but Chew would. (maybe her name wasn’t submitted?)

Sadie is an amazing player and great kid and deserving of this list, but if the coaches saw something, what is the Eagle seeing?(or not seeing) Granted Hillsboro and Hesston didn’t get any ‘eye witness’ coverage from any Wichita media, and I’m sure that’s part of it. But if the other counties are eligible for selection, then it might be nice to have some media at least watch matches those kids (Harvey County specifically).

Like others have stated, these are great players on your list, but I think some of the BEST are not on here. Maybe it’s worth it to have a more comprehensive list?

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  12. Hovpen says:

Joanna, great job on your list. Although several on here are looking for the “no child left behind” way of doing all metro or all state, the line has to be drawn somewhere. People, these are what they feel are the best seven in the metro area. Live with it. As for all-state being any better, believe me, All-State is much more political than the media here ever thought of being. If you haven’t realized it before, coaches have a tendency to vote for the person that they feel someone else won’t vote for so their own players can make the team. Not just on all state, but all league as well. I’ve seen some All-Ameicans not make the all league teams.

Yes, some of the best are not on there. You can only have seven and I don’t see anyone on there that doesn’t deserve recognition.

  13. avctlfan says:

Congrats to Karsen Wohler, setter from Clearwater! No hits, no digs, just consistent, solid play!

  14. dowhatsright says:

Glad to see many on the list, was able to see most of the sub-state for 3A at Conway………. but looking at some of the young ladies on the list,,,,,,,, very interesting to see one particular one from ML in the Honorable Mention list,,,,, there were actually 2 on that list one definately deserves to be there but the other one….. very questionable, was not able to see most of the games because of where I live but the ones I did see, well lets just say that I understand that her mom is a coach….. I just think that there might have been some more deserving players out there!!!!!!!! But congrats to all the young ladies

  15. volleyit says:

No child left behind. Funny. Just understanding that not all schools get the looks, and that’s just the way it is. I think this comment thread is exactly for these purposes. Talk about those who didn’t get the nod and more than likely deserved it. What really matters is the impact they have on their teams, in their league and reaching the personal goals they set for themselves. The best players won’t always get recognized for that, and those are the breaks. Still cracking up on the ‘no child left behind’. Funny.

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  16. luvvolleyball says:

I wonder why the Andale coach never received any nomination ballots to send in for all metro??? Talk about “no child left behind”..Looks like all the andale girls were left WAY BEHIND!!!

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  17. inthedark says:

I am wonder why the Andover player who was MVP of their league did not make all-metro but another andover player did? By doing all metro the eagle is in someway playing “no child left behind” by chosing girls from making sure to include more schools and taking only one player from each team. Instead of taking maybe two players from a school like Heights that went 41-5 they take a player from a marginal school like derby who honestly if they had an all-metro qualitly player they would have had a better record. Not even sure if McFarland was the best player on her team, but she made it as a junior so she was already on the team as a senior.

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  18. Joanna says:

luvvball — not sure why Andale coach wouldn’t have gotten a survey. Every school in the metro area is sent one. I did talk to her, as a Rule 10 coach, today and told her to make sure to check for that next year. But the school was sent one with it addressed to the volleyball coach.

inthedark — you definitely have some misconceptions about how this team is chosen, specifically that a previous All-Metro player is a shoo-in. You still have to have votes and stats to back it up.

If any of you would like to call me at 268-6270 and talk about picks, etc., great.

So, just to keep this lively debate going, who would your seven have been? How about your coach? Please back up your reasons.

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  19. Hovpen says:

Having watched her a few games this season, I’d be more concerned if McFarland wasn’t chosen. I sure wouldn’t want to hit that aspirn coming at me.

  20. VBALLfan says:

Crybabies, crybabies. Why can’t people be happy for these girls. They are all very important members of their teams. The success of these teams would not happen without them. The jealous parents on this blog should be embarrassed. Your daughter wasn’t picked, so what, move on. Congratulations to all the girls who were fortunate enough to get selected for all-metro and all league. It was a great season of high school volleyball!

  21. vb attack says:

Not a parent but an official: and sorry but while Mc Farland is an AMAZING athlete she is most definately not the best player on that team. All 7 pllayers were good but it is joannas paper and ultimately HER choice. She could put football players on there if she wanted. Its only one reporters opionion…….

  22. Hovpen says:

U’re entitled to your opinion, but that ball was out of bounds and you didn’t see it. :)

  23. inthedark says:

I can only go off games I saw and I was not very impressed with McFarland. I do think that since GP did win state that a player from their team would be on there along with their coach. This would have been a tough year to pick a coach with GP, Goddard and Heights all having great years. I think you had most of your team right on but again I am a traditionlist and am more partial to all league and all city. I always looked forward to seeing the all city pictures in the paper every year. I just always feel like all-metro is about making it diverse with different classes represented and different schools instead the real top players. Those of us who grew up in the city league it meant something to make all city and get your picture in the paper. I mean you were ALL CITY and everyone knew it because it was in the paper with your picture. All metro just feels more political than any other team out there and even if it isn’t it just feels like almost a little dirty. At the same time it takes away some of the internal satisfaction a young person might get from making all-city because people only know if they open the sports section. I fell bad for those players who didn’t get the intrinsic rewards from seeing their picture on the front page and being ALL -CITY! Whatever it takes to sell more papers to the small town people.

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  24. Joanna says:

Sigh. OK. There’s not one thing political about the All-Metro teams that we pick. Why you feel dirty looking at seven girls and a coach being honored in another fashion outside of All-League, I don’t understand. Disagree with the choices of All-Metro — in whatever sport — that’s fine.
But understand one thing — I’m not in anyone’s pocket, I don’t have bones to pick with anyone. I just pick the best players based on what I’ve seen, what other coaches say, how coaches vote. Really. Seriously. It’s that black and white.

Were there deserving athletes left off the team? Of course. But it has seven players and one coach.

The All-City issue is one that I can understand based on your history. So let me revisit why we changed how we did things.
*The Wichita Eagle has a readership base that extends beyond the city limits.
*Yet within the city limits, there are many, many students who attend area schools because that is their district. (This happens frequently with Andover, Maize and Goddard, for instance.)
*So why not find yet another way to honor the area kids in our readership base? Why not make it even bigger than we did All-City? This is meant to be the cream of the crop — whether you agree with selections or not — so it’s an even bigger honor.
*Is the Eagle about selling newspapers? Lord, yes. This is a business.

Feel free to dislike how we do things, feel free to disagree with me on whatever subject. But don’t make it so these kids think that it means less. Parents are constantly clamoring for their children to receive attention for this or that, so let those who are honored enjoy it.
It’s not dirty. It’s an honor.
A parent reminded me of that yesterday when she told me how ecstatic her daughter was when she found out she’d been chosen. That’s cool.

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  25. Hovpen says:

Actually, I wasn’t impressed with any single girl from Garden Plain, but they did look well as a team. For one of them to be listed just cause they won state would be highly political.

Don’t worry about it Joanna, I catch hell because I work for rivals and they require a membership to read what I write to help pay me and some jack thinks I’m bad cause I don’t work for free. You got a good team, you can live with it.

Sry, I got another advertising plug in didn’t I. :(

  26. Andoverbaler says:

No offense to anyone, especially the selections, but i think everyone takes all metro a bit to seriously. I actually like the face that it includes people from a big selection of schools, so u dont end up with a devision with one team as its first team, clearwater lol. All State is when the hard stats and real prestige comes, when is that coming out any clue

  30. vb attack says:

FUNNY THOUGHT: Two girls from our metro area have signed to play volleyball at WSU the “11th ranked team in the NATION.” But they are not good enough to make the “chadwick” all metro team. lol kind of proves a point some are trying to make on here that the best of the best are not who really makes this team. Dotson, Engle, Shook, S Clark, Kaiser, Bengston. Those are the BEST players in the area.

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  31. Joanna says:

vbattack — so what you’re saying, in a roundabout way, is if you were picking the team, it would be Dotson, Engel, Shook, Clark, Kaiser and Bengtson. Sounds like the “vb attack” team is a good one, too.
But we disagreed, and I based mine not only on opinion but coaches votes, nominations and talking to others. And that’s ok.

  32. Joanna says:

I asked this on the Soccer All-Metro post: If you were picking All-Metro (for whatever sport), what would your criteria be?
