As talented as Bryce Brown is, and I am very well aware that he is a phenom, it just seems that at least someone from East’s O-line would have placed higher than Honorable mention. You’ve got someone rushing for 250-300 ypg but no one who did better than average blocking? Certainly there were wholes to fill due to injuries duroing the season and at least one pre-season academic casualty but their QB wasn’t sacked all that much and Brown got his yards. Barring the debacle that was the SE game they did well against Carroll (after the 1st quarter was over) and with the exception of a 2 minute span against Derby did well in that game too. That is not to mention winning against Heights and the 3 1st Team All-City D-linemen they have. I know, I know, everybody has there opinion - just saying that it seems odd to me, that’s all.

As parents and as (I assume) mostly adult football fans, it is far more important for us to be truly proud of and congratulatory to the kids who DID get on the list then to complain about the kids who didn’t. Complaining about East’s lack of representation on the 1st and 2nd all city teams (and, sorry, they just weren’t first and second team material this year) is the kind of poor sportsmanship that I don’t think it is wise to demonstrate for our kids.

It’s not about how good of a player you are, it’s about how much money Mom and Dad have and who the coaches PETS are. Some deserve this honor but alot don’t. Just my opinion but I bet alot agree with me.

It’s strange that no East High defensive players were named to 1st team since their defense was statistically up in the top three of the city league for least yards for the majority of the season. Where do the coaches who vote on this get info from? Why aren’t there any defensive stats for east high posted?
[REPORT A VIOLATION]
November 18th, 2008 at 9:36 am
Just so you know I’m not just making up stats, I checked CatchIt Kansas, and East High school defense was top three in all but one category - first in total offense allowed, 2nd in yds/game behind Northwest, 2nd in passing yds/game, 2nd in rushing yds/game…so again I ask, why aren’t any east def players on 1st team? Is it because they play as a team, so there’s no standout players? Let me amend my previous question - why are no individual east high stats posted for defense? Could that have had an effect on getting players on 1st team?

Green4State — We’ll run the Top 11 teams on Dec. 7, the All-Metro team and the All-League teams on Dec. 4.
And Tom’s right — since all the City League teams are finished, even though we won’t run the All-City League team in the paper until Dec. 4, we thought we’d get it up on the web site so you all can have the info and because we know there’s a huge number of readers on the site interested in it.
We do not run leagues that still have teams playing. It’s just not fair to the coaches and the players.

Joanna, not sure of the process of this, does each coach submit names from his team, or do all of the coaches in the city put names in from memory, stats, etc.
Just curious of what the full process is, and would be appreciative if you could explain.
Congrats to all!!
Thanks!

So EastOL’sMom, you must tell me how nice it is living in that Ivory Tower.
I was ONLY pointing out a problem from a logical perspective. If A=B, and B=C, it follows that A=C. If your offense gets lots of yards rushing and doesn’t allow very many sacks it only follows that your O-line must be doing something right. In the last 4 seasons, 2 of which East went to the playoffs - and all four of which featured a stellar running back, they have only had one 1st team, and four 2nd team O-Linemen selected to All-City. As I pointed out in my previous post, Bryce deserves a mountain of praise for his accomplishments, especially this year when he didn’t have an offensive scheme that featured a blocking FB. However, the fact that he did so well without a blocking FB would generally be indicative of an offensive line that is doing something right.
The line of argument that I have taken was not meant in anyway to show poor sportsmanship, nor do I cotton much to your implication that this sets a poor example for our youth. As an American it is my duty to point out injustice and discrepancies of logic that would otherwise go unchallenged. That being said I am not going to sit here and let you bad mouth the United States of America!

Sports Gal, the way it usually works (and again, I haven’t run the CL meetings in about five, six years now), is that a coach nominates his players.
So for football, they’d probably start, let’s say, with quarterback. Each coach who nominated his quarterback would then give info on that quarterback — stats, accomplishments, etc. They’d vote on that position. Then they’d go onto running back, and each coach that nominated a player would talk about that player. Essentially trying to sell others on that player.

Master Blaster, you’re pretty funny but your spelling is absymal and you need to read Msgoofy’s post. Why don’t you try being proud of the East High kids and setting an example of not whining. I doubt there is one O line player who made first or second team that you could legitimately deny in favor of an East Hight O line player so I think it is time for you to find something else upon which to focus your apparently considerable reasoning skills.

My Dear Dear EastOL’sMom,
I am quite proud of the players from East. Nor would I at any time argue against someone else getting a nod for 1st or 2nd team. That is all beside the point. My sole issue is that you can’t statistically have the kind of success they have had and only ever had one 1st team offensive lineman in the last 4 years.
Oh, and before I forget let me apologize for whatever spelling errors might have occured in today’s posts. Had I known this was going to turn into some type of literary critique I would have been better prepared. As it was I thought this this was an informal blog, one free of the holier-than-thou attitudes one might expect to find in a copy of the “New Yorker” or “Esquire”. Oh, and please tell me what you mean by “East Hight”.
Presently I am turning my attention to what my wife is going to prepare for dinner. She is a good woman who knows her place and she makes my 1st Team selection everyday!

Master Blaster, I am truly proud of my stepson making honorable mention on the O-line. I am sorry that you feel that your son was unfairly denied first or second team. Perhaps with time and thought you will come to peace with the all city selections. Perhaps you will find something better to do than spend all your time posting today. Maybe you could do something nice for your 1st team wife…like make your own dinner:)

Each team has fans that go to the games every week, they see who does what, they know who makes things happen. If a kid isn’t on the list for some reason, these fans will wonder why.
It’s not the kids that will look bad if they are not on the list, but the coaches that didn’t nominate them. Then you have a kid who is not on the list feel bad, and a kid who is on the list feel bad because he/she knows someone else deserves it more.
Coaches have a huge responsibility to do what is right.

“There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so”. - Hamlet (Act II, Scene II).
Joanna,
It is generally my nature to approach all things sports in a stoic manner (as a Domer this has become a necessity for me if not a way of life). This is even more true when I consider the visscitudes that are the nature of high school athletics. Far more important to me than post-season honors are that those who I cheer for gave every last heroic measure. To me, that is what is admirable and best. Football, especially the high school variety, has a dichotomous nature in that it is the best example of what a “team” sport is while at the same time relying strongly on individuals to enter what at times can best be described as “single combat”. In the end it is all about effort, that is what will be remembered - all of the rest is quickly forgotten.
Congratulations to any and all football players from the City League, you have made everyone very proud.

Very good point shocker528. An example would be professional all-star games, occasionally someone from an absolutely dreadful team will go to the pro bowl while a team makes the playoffs without any pro bowlers on their roster. It doesn’t always happen that way, but it does happen.
