Shrine Bowl selections
Jan. 5, 2009 @ 1:36 p.m. by Joannaby joanna
The Shrine Bowl selections are now available.
The media met in December to pick the teams, although the coaches each had two picks they could make. Please remember that only two players from each team are allowed, and this is for seniors only. (Also, Conway Springs’ Jaydan Bird wasn’t picked because he was planning on going to Oklahoma early. Same with Bryce Brown from East and his plans to go to Miami early.)

Do you know when the XC teams will be announced?

I say nominate them anyway and give them the honor of being selected, then let them decline because the NCAA won’t allow them to play while enrolled in college

I’m with Hovpen. Unless they themselves asked ahead of time not to be nominated, then nominate them and let them decline.

Hmm, I did just read the story in the Cap-Journal and it says neither Byrd nor Brown were nominated.
Not completely sure who does the nominating — coaches and/or media? — but if they’re not nominated, it would be hard to select them.
I thought they HAD been nominated, but not chosen to the team.

As a member of the KS Shrine Bowl Board of Directors I can tell you, for a player to be selected they must first be nominated by their High School Coach. If they are not nominated then they can not be selected as a Shrine Bowl Players by the media or Shrine Bowl Coaches. In this case, Brown was not nominated by his coach. Maybe he asked his coach not to nominate him maybe the coach did it on his own, we don’t know but it is a shame that the coach denied Brown any opportunity to participate or at least be selected to play in the game.

XC Fan: The selection of the cross country teams is done a little different and are manly choosen by a commitee of coaches. I believe they hope to have the teams complete by the end of January if not sooner.

Most ot the players who are going on to play college football (at any level) will not play in this game anyway. I’m not saying they shouldn’t play, I’m just saying that most don’t want the added risk of gatting hurt and if they are going to a D1 school they wil have already had to report fo the summer anyway. Congrats to all.

A question for Joanna. Did Michael Starnes ever recieve the scholarship offer from Kansas State? You ran a blog a while back where he had stated he expected an offer from them the next day.
Just a question I’m not knocking anyone or trying to get anyone all fired up. Just curious.

In Response to Hinds57:
Most if not all the players that were selected and play in the game will be playing football at the next level whether it be Juco, NAIA, Div II, or Div. I. You are correct in that some of the Div. I schools expect their incoming freshman class to report early, which would keep them from participating in the game, but we do and will continue to have Div. I talent in the game. Just last year Logan Dold from Garden Plain, who played for Kansas State this past season, played in the game.

Hinds57 — Starnes’ dad e-mailed me and said K-State has cooled off. He could be leaning toward Fort Hays State. But Utah State has now gotten in the mix.

hahahahahahahahahahaha hotgirl101= Alex Croitoru i know it
im one of his best friends i have to stick up for him, if the ignorant coaches wont who will. but seriously im not that bitter he is good but it just sucks when u beat the team twice, and not beat but demolished when it counted in playoffs, and u still see the good players not getting the recognition they deserve. it makes me frown

Andover HS Alex Croitoru had a real nice year, Alex don’t let this overshadow the season you had. ACHS Starnes is on the KSU 3rd tier or “C” list and might get a walk-on offer from them.

I was wondering what the criteria was for the media in picking the shrine bowl team? Who are the quarterbacks chosen for the west squad and how do their stats compare to Conner Martin out of Salina-Sacred Heart. Conner had 69 TD passes and almost 5000 yards passing in his 2 years as a starter. Last year as a junior, he was 2 TDs shy of the state record while he led the state in TD passes with 37. This year, after losing 3 senior receivers and 13 senior lettermen he had 32 TD passes and 2300+ yards.
Two years ago the media did the same thing to another quarterback at Sacred Heart-Dane Simoneau-who was eventually selected as an alternate to the shrine bowl. He went on to play very well in the Shrine Bowl game and is now the starting quarterback for Washburn after starting midway thru his redshirt freshman year. So if it is the size of the school that sways the selection committee, they should look again. I would hope that when looking at alternates, the Shrine Bowl selection committee would consider Conner Martin. The stats speak for themselves.

Andoverbaler: Would you like to see Springer choke like he did against Andover in the last game with 8 receptions for 207 yds.
Andover really shut him down.
Andoverbaler nothing personal but I am afraid that I am going to have to question your sanity.
Have a wonderfull day!!!

Jeff: good points, but I think the selection committee also looks at the level of competition. And Sacred Heart’s was nothing special.
