updated 1-22: Sounds like Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin will be in town today to visit Bryce Brown. A Miami assistant coach sat with him at Tuesday’s Andover Central at Rose Hill girls basketball game, too. And I got an e-mail that Pete Carroll was in to see him this week, too.

From Wednesday: Kansas State football coach Bill Snyder made a visit to Southeast on Tuesday because of running back/defensive back Joseph Randle, a junior and two-time All-Metro player. (Thanks to the heads-up from buffs1)

Snyder also visited Northwest and talked to Weston Schartz about running back Demarcus Robinson. (Thanks to the heads-up from Coach EM)

I talked to Gary Guzman and Schartz today about the visit.

Guzman: “He got swarmed by our teachers and administrators. It was an in-service day, so a lot came out of meetings to meet him. We have a lot of Kansas State fans here. I really didn’t get a chance to talk to him.

“He didn’t didn’t ask me anything about Joseph. He didn’t ask any questions. I volunteered some information, that he’s a good kid, good student, that type of thing.
He just just stopped by. Coaches tend to do that at times.
At the last minute, one of his assistant coaches called me and asked if I would be around.
He (Snyder) was very personable with everybody. He took time to talk with everyone, even took some pictures. He was walking down the hallway and people were coming out. It was crazy.
Being who he is and being here in Kansas, it happens to him all the time, I’m sure.”

Other teams that have been through Southeast to recruit Randle include Kansas, Illinois, Arizona, Miami, Louisville. Former K-State coach Ron Prince offered Randle a scholarship, but Illinois was the first to offer him.

“Having a player that might have the opportunity to play Division I, you’ll get some of the bigtime coaches coming through. It’s a nice thing for me, too.”

Weston Schartz: Snyder “took his time and talked, visited with the coaches, visited with our principal. He was nice to be around. I’ve never seen him like that.”

As for offers, Robinson has been offered by Louisville, but Schartz thinks KSU and KU are close to offering.

“I think, in a week, after recruiting season is over, I think he’ll get more (offers).”

How embarrassing for SE teachers and admins to act like little girls seeing Miley Cyrus.

Once again, a nice little post gets turned into negativity.

I don’t consider it acting like little girls seeing Miley Cyrus. Don’t we all have sports figures that we admire?
My husband would love to meet Steve Spurrier. I have no idea why, but he would.
My parents met Ron Gardenhire and still talk about how nice he was.

There are people that I admire and I would like to meet, but it doesn’t mean that people are giddy or goofy just because of that.

  4. For Pete's Sake says:

Seriously Joanna? Its one thing to want to meet the man, but for grown adults to swarm the man like he is the second coming of the Beatles. I would say hero worship has gone to the extreme in this country. Now that is the perfect blog topic if you will.

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  5. Joanna says:

Seriously, Pete. I doubt that people were lined up 10 deep to meet him, doubt that they were drooling at the sight of him. So they wanted to get out of their inservice and meet him. Why is that so negative?
You really don’t have a person you admire that you would like to meet?

I have met people like Ryne Sandberg and George Brett, but I didn’t “swarm” them either. Didn’t ask them for their autograph, didn’t take pictures, didn’t interrupt their meals with their families or whatever nonsense happens. I treated them like they were ordinary people, shook their hands and moved on. And by the way weren’t these teachers supposed to be working?

Pete — Seriously, are you questioning whether the teachers lost work time because they said hi or had a picture taken with Bill Snyder? Have you had a break today? I have. Just sat for about five minutes and talked to a friend about nonsense. I’ll probably have another break later today.

Me, I wouldn’t ask for an autograph, either. But if I weren’t a sports reporter, I bet I would. I think it would be cool to have Michael Jordan’s autograph. Does that make me a crazy, too?

  9. For Pete's Sake says:

I don’t think I used the word crazy, nor would I say that questioning a bunch of adults mobbing a college football coach negative. I think you are being a little sensitive about this. I am just not buying into the hero worship of the man that is all, and it wouldn’t matter if it was Mark Mangino or Bob Stoops or Barack Obama. I just don’t get all gooey when I meet a quasi celebrity. I have a right to my opinion right?

  16. Coach EM says:

Not for sell…ever. Got one from Prince (any buyers???) and one from Belotti when he came through. You seriously get to meet coaches like that whom you greatly respect once in a blue moon. And unless you are in the coaching community, it is even fewer and far between. For myself, I was at KSU in the 11 game bowl streak. The ball represents a time in my past that I am immensely proud of, and the opportunity to meet a man I truly respect. Nothing more.

Oh yeah, Coach Miller from KU was through today, and really enjoyed hearing his stories about when he was at Miami and coached Ray Lewis, now that was cool. 34. FBallfn says:

Snyder has earned the attention and should be recruiting Wichita/Kansas hard as he seems to be. The kool-aid drinkers however need to realize the kstate is not a football destination for top players is a landing for 2nd level and small town players that grew up in purple households. I promise you when these kids go to combines/camps etc all over the country KSU is not a place you brag about getting an offer from. In the Big 12 alone you have OU,Neb,the Tex schools and even Mizzo that are much bigger draws for talented football players . I wish it was different and maybe someday it will be (doubtfull) but the reality is Snyder has a uphill job and will have to build his team with overachievers not top 100 players.

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  35. Willis Wildcat says:

Exactly FBallfn. Look if my memory serves me correctly in those years K-State was at its best when Snyder didn’t land the top recruits (I think the most highly touted recruit was Ell Roberson). He went out and got the kids he could build up, the juco players, etc. He has to recruit the Browns, Randles and Robinsons just in hopes that they may buy his pitch, but it is unlikely. He is going to have to really be creative in rebuilding this time around because their is more competition in the Big 12 than in the Big 8. I hope he does it.

Your right Joseph was not there, but we don’t know if Snyder knew that. You might do things a little bit different than other teachers, but nobody likes to be in meetings all day. It was a way for the staff to enjoy the day a little bit better. And its not like they spent the entire workday with him. Your entitled to your own opinion, but it’s a little ridiculous that you’re chastizing others because you work without any fun. That’s just my opinion.

In these tough economic times where every dollar is needed for education I kind of find that about as appalling as you calling a football coach a hero. Sorry if your day is so monotonous that it was little better meeting a “hero”. WIth teachers like you I find it kind of embarrassing to call myself one as well. Now that was immature

I doubt if any students or whining parents would be upset!! Also I don’t think anyone forced those coaches to work for Snyder-THEY CHOSE TO DO IT RIGHT? You clearly think you are above everyone else in the world. What right do you have to judge anyone else? People with attitudes like yours is why so many students dislike school. When is the last time a former student of yours called and thanked you for anything you did for them. I am willing to bet Bill Snyder gets calls weekly for ex-players and coaches. He can throw his tantrums about the butter not being whipped all he wants but the fact remains the league is tougher. But I am sure he will try to play as many 1-AA schools as he can so his record isn’t totally atrocious. As for knowing a good coach when you see one, you wouldn’t know a good coach if he slapped you upside the head or in the case of Hutchinson, hist you with a gatorade bottle. Sorry hutch people. He is going to need all the Randle’s and Robinson’s he can get. But the fact remains, was Bill Snyder coming back to KSU the best thing. After the great Big XII title win something happened and he was not the same coach. The Big XII is not the same conference when he left. Add to that the state that Ron Prince has left the program and its a chore better left to someone who is almost 70, especially a person who is legendary for his 22 hour work days. Its just not humanly possible. If you take your purple blinders off and ask yourself is this the best long-term answer for my team and if you were honest with yourself you would say no. The probability of success is not great, use John Robinson’s second stint at USC as a guide.

As for heroes, I just don’t consider him to be one, if others do that is great. Everyone needs heroes, but I kind of agree with Charles Barkley (I can’t believe I am) heroes need to be your parents not athletes or in this case a coach. Someone mentioned coaches as heroes and the movies that inspired, absolutely those men were inspiring and coaches can inspire and if Bill Snyder does that for you more power to ya. I will just chuckle when you people act like little kids when he comes to your school.

I have a differing opinion, it doesn’t mean that i forgot breakfast or got my butt kicked (profanity isn’t really necessary is it?).

I actually tried to put something worthwhile on here about K-State and heroes. Obviously some of you can’t read or maybe its just something that hit a nerve. While Joanna hates the childish back and forth, I am sure the hits the site is taking alleviates some of the mind-numbing pain. So keep your personal attacks coming. Don’t you think Michael Jordan as a Washington Wizard was a has been? Wasn’t it painful to watch? What are the expectations in Manhattan? To be in the top third of the Big XII like Big B seems to think they will be in 3 years. Don’t you people want to win Big XII championships, maybe even compete for an occasional national title. Don’t you think the hire was short sighted? Your right he deserves respect, but the fact is he was not good at the end of the first go-around.

Could also name some other folks like Jordy Nelson (who he talked into being a WR), Mark Mangino, Darren Sproules. He also works with Kansas Mentors, changing lives.

You sound a bit scared that Snyder is going to win again. Are you a chickenhawk, if so, you should be concerned. You run your mouth like a child. I hope you are not one of children’s teachers. As for your concern over the SE teachers wanting to meet coach Snyder, maybe they were excited to meet a man that has spent endless hours on the Kansas mentoring program, that helps kids that need it. Kev is he a hero for touching the lives of Darren Sproles or is he a hero for turning around K-State and winning ball games? I never said he wasn’t a good man, but did the people glad-hand him yesterday for touching kids lives or winning ball games.

One important reality that student athletes and families must face during the recruiting process is that receiving a few letters from college coaches or a one time school visit does not constitute serious recruitment. While finding a few letters in the mailbox, a school visit, and email inbox might indicate a good start to the process, it certainly does not mean a scholarship is inevitable.

Once a college coach has developed a massive list of potential student athletes who might be a good fit for their program, it comes time to contact the student athletes. Even though college coaches are always restricted by their recruiting budgets, they usually begin their process by contacting thousands of student athletes. Of course that number will vary depending on the sport and amount of money a coach has available, but either way it is almost always surprisingly high.

That Guy your right I am just projecting into the future and going off the final two years of his coaching reign. The Big XII is a lot different now then 3 years ago. Mizzou and KU are much better, Colorado is down but that was due to injuries last year should be better next. Pelini looks like he is righting the ship at Nebraska and the South division is better than ever. I think he is fighting an uphill battle. I love the OC hire though…but I think he is a head coaching candidate in the very near future and won’t be around long. If Snyder can sign a couple of in-state studs that would be great for KSU, if he just reverses the damage Ron Prince did than he has done the second greatest coaching job in a century. I agree with Barry Switzer, Bill Snyder is the Coach of the 20th Century, but it doesn’t change my opinion he is washed up and the KSU administration would have done better to look elsewhere.

I agree with you that it is kind of silly for grown men and women to swarm for photo’s and autograph’s that is something those people like so why do you need to put down something that they enjoy?

I am a KSU grad and have no dilusion that KSU will be winning anything but with the state of our University’s president and Athletic department I think Snyder was the best choice. He will bring stability and I will promise you this we will be able to tackle next year.

It was only 20 years ago that they were called Futility U. To even be having this conversation shows how far they have come. I don’t understand why you have gone on this tirade to begin with. If Snyder is beyond his time, as you claim, then why does it matter to you? Do you really want to see K-State succeed and you were disappointed by this hire? You should be cheering that they hired someone who will doom them to fail. Then, you can support your team and leave all the K-State fans to moan and groan about the administration’s ineptitude. I know if KU hired someone that was sure to fail, I wouldn’t waste 2 minutes trying to convince them it was a bad move because I would hope their folliness would lead to K-State’s success.

Some teams set high goals I guess K-State and their fans don’t

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  105. spauly says:

Wins matter more than strength of schedule. I don’t remember ever seeing a team with more than 2 losses winning the National Championship. So, as long as you win your games, and belong to a BCS conference, then strength of schedule does not really matter.

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  106. For Pete's Sake says:

Wins are primary of course but ask Texas if strength of schedule doesn’t matter because they didn’t go to the Big XII title game as OU had a better strength of schedule than UT. OU played for the national title Texas did not. Do your research next time.

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  107. spauly says:

That is true, but that has more to do with non-conference scheduling than it did conference scheduling which you are inferring when saying some people care about who they play. The only difference in Big XII opponents that Texas and Oklahoma had was that one played Colorado and the other Nebraska. So, I don’t think the Big XII schedule played much of a decision on which of those teams had a better Strength of Schedule. I think it had more to do with the fact that OU had wins over two Top 20 teams out of conference while Texas had zero.

If you want to accept mediocrity, I am more than happy for you. While most teams strive for championships, K-State is happy for the occasional Alamo Bowl. Scouts.com and Foxsports.com did a story about who the perennial winning schools are and how they are also the best schools at recruiting. Their is a reason why they are perennial winners, they recruit the top athletes like Randle and Robinson. Snyder scored a couple of great recruits like Sproles and Roberson, often he turned the average recruit into a very good player, and he won his fair share of his ball games. But, with the Big XII changing like it has in the past several years, I will ask can Bill Snyder compete. I say no, many of you seem to disagree, or at least I think you do when you quit the name calling. Time will tell if Snyder coming back is a good idea.
