Just watched the top five Super Bowl ads, including Mean Joe Greene and Coke. Wonderful ad.

But we’ll talk about the Super Bowl as we get closer to it. Right now let’s hit today’s games, with a heavy emphasis on the championships.

I’ll be watching Wichita East play Highland Park tonight. Both are ranked in state, I’ve got East at 4th in 6A, while Highland Park is first in 5A. I’m taking Highland Park in this game. I think Highland Park is too deep for the Aces, and their guard play is superior (superior to most of the state). HP plays the same style of game as East, though — fast, fast, fast — and it will be a high-scoring game. I expect Leon Flowers and Marcus Adams to have big games for East, but I think the difference will be the perimeter game, where HP will dominate.

Wichita Collegiate vs. Wichita Trinity in El Dorado — Ooooo, this is a good game. How about the 3A and 4A schools getting to the title game, perfect records intact. Some awfully good teams here, yet they came through. I’ll take Collegiate in this game, by the slimmest of margins.

Southeast vs. BV Northwest at Valley Center — I’m taking Southeast here. BV Northwest will be the Buffs’ toughest competition of the tourney, but they’ll be up for it.

Andover Central will play Goddard at Chanute. Mmmm. Ilike this game. Both teams have had some questionable losses lately, so this tournament has been good for them. I think this game is too close to call.

Andover plays host Coffeyville in the championship — I’m taking Andover. The girls play Cherryvale in the title game. Both Trojans teams coming away with titles? Why not?

At Chaparral, Wellington and Kingman will play for the title. I’ll take Kingman in this game.

Newton will play Dodge City in the TOC. Dodge City always seems to find a way to get the title game, no matter how rough its season has been. While I like Newton in this game, I wouldn’t put it past DC to pull out the win.

Rose Hill vs. Haven at Halstead — I’m not picking this game. I’m sure you understand. Good championship, though.

Republic County vs. Hesston at Hillsboro — I’m loving this championship game. It’s definitely one I wouldn’t mind seeing. I think Hesston wins, but what a tough, tough matchup for these teams. Wish I could be there.

Maize vs. McPherson at Mac — Definitely not the championship I envisioned. Congrats to Maize for getting to this point. But I’m taking McPherson in a fairly big win.

Bishop Miege vs. SM Northwest at Aquinas — Bishop Carroll is playing for seventh. Miege is going to win this game, but it won’t be easy. I have faith in that.

Clay Center vs. Salina Central in Salina — You know, I’ve picked for Salina Central all season this year. I’m taking Clay Center.

In girls action, there’s Wichita Heights playing in the title game vs. SM West at SM South — I’ll take Heights. Hesston girls are also in the Hillsboro tourney final, facing Thomas More Prep. South Haven girls will play Argonia in the SCBL final

Other boys championships:

Berean vs. Peabody-Burns at Burrton

Kinsley and Word of Life at Cunningham

Medicine Lodge vs. Nickerson at St. John

Oxford vs. West Elk in the SCBL tourney (I’ll take Oxford with Bryce Mayes scoring big points)

So it’s a big day. I’m liking a lot of different matchups here. Where will you be? Which title games would you love to see? For that matter, what non-title games interest you?

C’mon, Joanna…why NOT pick the Haven-Rose Hill game? You’re not going to Halstead, are you? :)

  • Joanna

observer — I’m taking no chances. Not one.

  • Tom

just pick Haven… then they’ll be nice to you.

Although, you’ll be wrong. But that is beside the point.

  • hooper2

great way of saying Dodge always “finds a way” to get into finals, The out shoot their opponents at the line is way. Stats on-line show 30 attempts for Dodge and only 13 for Holcomb, weird? I wonder what the track record is for the past yrs of attempts vs. Dodge in their tournament. Holcomb boys are a very good team and attack, they should have gone to the line more than 13 times

  • lkrsfan

East over Highland Park with Ja’ln Williams leading the way and outplaying Rico.

  • ictaero

Collegiate vs. Trinity in the final at El Dorado. The ritual whining about private schools will begin in 3… 2… 1…

  • Hillsboro

Anybody else have predictions on the Republic County Hesston championship?

  • http://yahoo.com yahoo

    It’s Haven… they suck at everything…no offense…
IDK how they even got to the finals. Did they play the schools of the deaf and blind in the first 2 rounds?

  • Jim Cross

    Hesston by at least 20

  • WC

the collegiate trinity game will be huge. the crowd looks to be electric as collegiate travels very well and i’m betting trinity does as well

  • Hillsboro

People think the Hesston Republic County game should be close, is hesston really that good?

  • Hillsboro

responding to you Jim cross wondering what makes you think Hesston can win by that many, ill take hesston by 10

Joanna, i am sorry about what happened to you at the Haven vs. Collegiate game, but that was over a week ago. There is no need to make a comment about it on almost every blog. Many Haven fans feel bad about what happened. Haven is not all bad, there were one or two bad fans at that game. Really, this whole confrontation needs to be stopped on both sides. There is more to life than a basketball game, so lets all let that situation go and worry about more important things.

  • Joanna

let it go — Can I ask a question of the Haven folks, without starting anything else? How bad do you think I feel about getting something thrown at me?
I’m used to people not liking me; it’s the nature of the business. But never in my life did I ever expect that someone would throw something at me. And all I said was “I don’t think these games will be close.”
There has never in my life been a time where I’ve thrown something at someone. Never. Not even after a hairdresser screwed up my hair at 16 or when a boy broke up with me.
I didn’t disparage your town, I didn’t say your teams stink. I merely made a comment I’ve made a bazillion times about a bazillion games.
Not one person from Haven has come to me and told me what a crappy situation it is and how bad, I’m sure, it made the town look. So yeah, I feel crappy about having someone be so angry at such a comment that they threw something at me.
So I laugh about it. I guess we all deal with things differently. I’m not mad. I now think it’s funny. I still haven’t dogged the people of Haven. Haven’t said anything negative about the players or the coaches. But bottle caps will probably always been in my vocabulary, simply as an inside joke. Because laughter is the best medicine. Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down. It is what it is. I give 110 percent. Oops. I ran out of pertinent cliches there. Sorry. It’s late.

Well, someone needs to put a lid on it. No more popping off about this subject!

  • FBallfn

Joanna i know we dont agree some and you have hammered me in the past but someone throwing things at you is WEAK so feel free to bring it up every week the rest of the year if you like !

  • Joanna

proud dad — put a cap on the subject. Who feels all bottled up now?

    Hi Joanna -

i was viewing this site for the first time in an effort to see what items were reported about the Haven win at the Rupp tourney last night. We have children who are student/athletes for the Haven School District and i just became aware that anything was done to you personally over your reporting role at the Wichita Eagle. I’d like to apologize for this and ask that this does not represent the student body or the citizens of the communities that represent Haven – Haven, Mt. Hope, Yoder, Partridge and Hutchinson. i believe that you will find that our schools and their families provide for students with higher integrity than one person. A talk with our student athletes will prove this point as many of their names appear over and over on the Honor Roll, National Honor Society, involved in community service, mentoring other students and participating in select local, regional and state band, vocal, scholar and debate venues and as National Merit Scholars. This is getting to the real students who represent Haven High. We welcome your time and effort to report on High School sports and the students who are challenged every day to make good decisions on and off the court. This is the true test of character. Hope you look past this one incident and meet our student athletes on a personal level. Come on out for the Wildcat Classic next week. We are looking forward to some great games.

Well, there you go, Joanna. The peace pipe has been passed! And, it should be a great tourney, as well.

  • Joanna

Parents, Observer — The peace pipe has been accepted.
