I spent yesterday afternoon calling coaches to see if any of their kids who had trained or were training under Brian Butler had been contacted by the NCAA. No one knew anything about it.

But the NCAA did meet with East coach Brian Byers on Thursday, and the NCAA met with Northwest player Colby Duranleau.

How do you feel about this if you were/are with the program? How would you feel about the future of Potential Players? Do you think the NCAA is merely trying to make sure things are on the up-and-up with the nation’s top running back?

  • football mom

My son was contacted to work with Brian Butler and we opted not to do it for a couple of reasons.
    1. Our head coach asked us not too
    2. we had heard that once some of these kids started working with butler that they ended up thinking they were better- did not want to be team players
    3. my husband was worried about paying anyone for these services

I hope all the kids that worked out with him will not be affected by this mess with the ncaa. this story is all over rivals too

  • For Pete’s Sake

Thumbs up to you football mom!

  • FBallfn

football mom parents should make that choice but i hope whoever is coaching your son is really preparing him for the next level. I will dissagree with points 2 and 3 . Potential Players does not teach there kids to act better than the team and if they play for a head coach worth his salt this would never even be an issue. “Paying for services ” that i really dont understand . Personal trainers in every sport charge for services. Math tutors charge for services. While i will be the 1st one to say PARENTS should be the ones to decide just make sure you are deciding on FACTS and not hearsay from those who dont really get it in the 1st place. I have taken the time to study many football programs in this state and WITHOUT placing blame most if not all of our programs do not do enough to prepare the top players to advance to the next level. I would even listen to the arguement that its not really there job or that they even have time to do this and are limited by rule as well. Doing everything that most high school football programs have the kids do in my opinion will not prepare you for the next level .

  • FBallfn

Paying for services ! i want to touch on this topic again. There are companies charging$ 2000/$3000 for the same service Brian provides and that does not include the training side either so would suggest doing some homework before you make any decission.

  • Hank

From reading the article regarding the NCAA meeting with the two area coaches and one player, it sounds to me like Butler is more of an agent, giving advice on whether to go pro in the CFL or go to college. Now FBallin, before you come to his defense, I understand there are people all over the country who do this and charge $2000/$3000 for the same service. They all sound like agents and the NCAA should be in there investigating. Why else would the number one talent still be “shopping”. And I use the word shopping because that is exactly what it seems like they are doing. Who can give me the best deal. Well a scholarship should be the only thing they have to offer, which they all have. So the decision should come down to the best program fit, and if he hasn’t made that decision, why announce a deadline (announcement date) of March 12. It sounds as if he is saying that is the last day to get your offers in.

  • FBallfn

Hank i understand thats how it can look from the outside but its just not true. Bryce has had a long time to decide but the fact of the matter is he was all ready to go to Miami then a few things changed towards the end of the year. With that being the case if it were my son i woud want him to take his time and be 100% sure . Making the right choice could be worth millions of $$$ to Bryce in 3/4 years so i hope he gets in the best situation for him.

  • Itsjustagame

I have a 3rd grade basketball player. I will consider giving Brian Butler 10% if he can get him a NBA contract by next year.

  • For Pete’s Sake

FBallfn said it all in his response to Football Mom about what Potential Players really is all about don’t listen to your coach because he can’t adequately prepare you to get a college scholarship.

Brian Butler is the gift that keeps on giving to the Varsity Kansas blog.

  • FBallfn

Pete how the heck did even you drag that out of my post ! lol my man you should run for office the way you enjoy twisting words.

i will agree this blog might go under without Brian.

  • football mom

I know Bryce is a great kid but what I don’t understand is when you are the top recruit in the nation that you do not make a decision. These universities are giving him the opportunity of a lifetime- probably $200,000 to 400,000 for a 5 year full ride scholarship. There is no guarantee that he will go to the NFL- he could get hurt or a number of other things could happen but no one can take away his education. That’s why you are called a STUDENT-ATHLETE.

FBallfn- I have talked some coaches who have told me how some not all of these players act after working out with Butler. Football recruitment should be done by the athlete, parents and their coach as Mark Bell said!

  • Itsjustagame

There is always going to be the hope that salesmanship trumps talent.

  • FBallfn

If a parent has that abilty and wants to take on all that it requires then yes i agree 100% but each situation is different. If your dad played in the NFL im guessing you will be just fine either way.In the perfect world yes the High School coach should handle it but the fact is its not getting done in most cases. I will also say again they are not taught to act that way and im sure there are kids that dont train with Brian that act like jerks as well .

  • FBallfn

There are thousands of players with the same talent basicly and yes in most cases it does take a salesman to set a kid apart. This might be a coach or not but it is a sales job in the end.

  • Itsjustagame

I have a question. In high school how to you avoid the catch 22 of standing up for your kid and the possibility of the High School Coach telling the College Coach that their Parents are difficult?

  • jay hawk

Its a game- Are you getting on the coach about playing time or a position? If so that never goes over well. My suggestion is to let your son fight his own battles. I would hope that no coach would get in the way a kid getting recruited or talking bad about parents unless they are out of control.

  • For Pete’s Sake

    Football Mom:

The University of Miami made major changes in the English Department that is why Bryce is going back on his verbal commitment to the university.

  • Jimmy Crack Corn

if the parents who are so upset with what the coaches are doing or not doing for their son…..transfer to another school or have brian bulter start his own team and then the “coach” will be the perfect fit for what you say you need. as we have all been told, BB would be great. he has tons of football coaching experience as well as sport performance background.

he has coached many many successful teams and has years upon years of sports performance experience and the education and certification needed to train athletes and not put them in dangers way……oh sorry, he doesnt have any of those. hmm???

  • Itsjustagame

jay hawk. Thanks that’s wise advice. Being a parent it seems hard to have the blessing of when to keep your mouth shut and the curse of not thinking before using it. Coaches are transient at best and children are forever. When a coach feels the parents should not be part of the scene it can be difficult to deal with.

  • DanielEdwardHobble

I totally agree the Jonas Brothers do suck!

  • Tribeck

I want to know how anyone ever got a scholarship before Mr.Butler came along?

  • FBallfn

Tribeck the question should be how many kids that could have didnt get one ? Brian doesnt work magic but what he does do is get them a “look” and shows them how to get there best on display. I keep hearing “IF” a kid can play they will find him but like i have said before there are 1000 kids that have the same talent and getting the right film and combine prep can be the difference in many cases.

  • jay hawk

Does anyone know what transpired with Colby and Butler? Also why did Colby pick a jucco over getting four years of school paid for? Was it grades?

  • Itsjustagame

How to not use Brian Butler
    Register with the Clearing House.
Fill out Prospective Athlete Forms on line.
    Have at least a 3.0 G.P.A
    Score above 18 on A.C.T.
    Return Calls
    Have the performance numbers (Important)
    Sell. Sell. Sell.

  • jay hawk

to continue how to not use Brian Butler
    make a highlight dvd
    have good full game tapes
make a bio with all your stats and accolades
mail out dvds, call and email coaches
go to any camp where if you think it is a school you might want to go to most of these are one day camps now and not expensive
    write thank you notes
    be a good citizen
    be a team player

  • jay hawk

all the above can and should be done by parents and players they are the ones who receive the gift of a free education

  • For Pete’s Sake

Excellent advice Jayhawk and all without hiring an agent.

  • Itsjustagame

    To add to the above.
Make those 5 College visits you get count.

  • FBallfn

Yall should start your own service since its so easy and you have all the free time and knowledge to do so. I dont dissagree at all that those things need to be done but its not as simple as you make it seem . Some parents barely have time to watch there kids play let alone do all the things you have listed. It sounds good on this blog but in reality it takes much more time and work that you are leading people to believe.

  • FBallfn

I will add a lot Coachs dont even do a quality job making highlight film let alone parents who dont know what there looking for !

  • jay hawk

FBallfn- I don’t want to start a service look at all the controversy your service has caused and now schools are pulling out because they don’t want to work with butler.

Believe me when i say that i know it takes a lot of time I have been there and done that for my kid . It’s not easy but either is getting someone to hand you over hundreds of thousands of dollars which is what the student athlete is receiving. Hard work pays off! It’s much more rewarding to do it yourself and know your kid was recruited for the right reasons.

I am not talking about Bryce when I say some of these kids were supposeably offered scholarships to Miami only so the coaching staff could stay in good with Butler and the Browns- but according to the New York Times yesterday Miami is done with Bryce- that is horrible. Thanks for getting kids from Kansas looked at and giving them a bad reputation! Good job Butler.

  • jay hawk

It would be worth it to have a professional do your dvds if you do not know what you are doing. This is not expensive at all and worth every penny because you don’t want a college coach putting in a bad tape they will just throw it aside!

  • FBallfn

a bad name ? well no not really. the players that come out of Potential Players are ready to work at the D 1 level which is a shock to a lot of talented kids every year when they get to and cant handle it or just are not ready. Coachs like kids who know how to work and will contact Potential Players because they see the work ethic. Bryce is one player only 1 the program is sound and will produce quality kids.

  • FBallfn

I should say has and will continue to do so because the results are out there all ready .

  • jay hawk

Bryce would have been recruited without Butler just like Bell and Randle are getting recruited they are talented athletes!

  • Itsjustagame

Give Mr. Butler credit. He gets these kids attention in the worse way. And I mean the worse way :]

  • Huh?

Yeah Arthur Jr. was really ready to handle things at Miami. Did he play this year?

  • Tribeck

FBallfn, 2 questions.Who has gotten a scholarship because of Mr.Butler that would not have,otherwise?Also-do you consider Mr.Butler an agent?

  • FBallfn

no hes not an agent and there is no exact way to answer your other question but i know for a fact of several kids that didnt get even much of a look until they had Brian working for them and now 3 of 4 have full ride D 1 . He is good at the service he provides and i understand all the pub Bryce is bringing in but Brian is about helping many players not just Bryce.

  • FBallfn

jay hawk do you even know how randles offers started ?or bell to FBU camp the answer is no . this may shock some of you but Brian does things behind the sences for players that noone will even hear about.

  • Tribeck

Well, I guess that’s my question…exactly who? The kid from Mulvane? Jayden Bird? The Browns are pretty high profile, but people knew who Tharp was on his own, did they not?

  • jay hawk

I am sure Butler wants to get the chance to work with Bell and Randle and if he got them invited to this camp that was very nice. I also know that Butler went to a game with Bell and his dad and you know darn well that he is dying to work with Blake- because he has no super star for the class of 2010. It’s pretty obvious in Bob Lutz’s article that the Bell’s are going about this the right way and his dad even mentioned that Blake will for sure sign no later than signng day next year-I am only guessing that if Mark was ever considering letting Blake work with Butler he never will now after the Bryce soap opera

  • FBallfn

im curious jayhawk why do you think Brian has to have a “superstar” as you call it every year ? There will be at least one in the class of 2010 guys going to top a 20 Program but again im not sure why that matters as long as kids are getting there education paid for ? Blake doesnt need much help opening doors at this point and for sure with a dad that played in the league so im not sure how that is a negitive towards Brian either ?

  • jay hawk

I think he wants a superstar so he can sit behind him during interviews- be their voice which it looks like he can’t do anymore or charge to look at Bryce’s updates? What’s that all about?

I bet the Browns have regrets about Butler now, as schools are pulling out. He wants college coaches to know he is associated with these big names so the coaches might trust him about other kids he has. Some parents who are naive and may think if their son gets a letter in the mail they are now D-1 talent may seek out someone like this. As you have said time and time again people can pay for training so then why not go to a Matt Sanders? Get your training and no hoopla!

  • FBallfn

schools pulling out ?ya ok lol i agree parents should decide if or who they want there son to train with but the “hoopla” is mostly from having the #1 player in the country this wouldnt even be an issue if he was the 50th rated running back. I think people missunderstand whats really going on but in time it will all shake out.

  • that guy

fballfn, why do you spend so much time defending butler and potential players?

you have a response for everything…im just curious

  • jay hawk

The hoopla is that he is an agent!

  • once again

Once again all this hubaloo….will you all stop talking trash when this is proved to have no context and I say all that dont like him fine does it really have anything to do with you or your children NO IT DOES NOT so if you dont like him or his training then keep your children away but obviously there are intelligent parents out there that do like and trust him and have their kids involved with him… so what this really comes down to is either you like him or you dont….stay away or dont….it all a matter of opinion who is not involved or only have 1 side of the facts….keep it to yourself stop talking about the kids…..another point is why havent any of the parents been interviewed it seems they talk to high school coaches, but none of the parents have been interviewed that really doesnt show all of the facts if you are only talking to the disgruntled side why not talk to the parents.

  • Big B

that guy-If you have followed the posts of fballfan you would realize he actually knows Butler and has had personal dealings with him. Unlike all the people on here who just believe reporters and others who have no clue what Butler really does. Fballfan could ask you why you guys spend so much time bashing him without EVER even talking to the man. As for those of you who question Arthur Brown’s ability, read the article in todays Eagle and contemplate Shannon’s comments on him. I think Shannon likes him. I just hope all of you come back on here when the NCAA says they discovered NO wrongdoing on Butler. Bet you will all disappear. Wondering why Blake Bell doesn’t work with Butler is hilarious. Why does he need to with who is Dad and Uncle are. Get a clue people!!!

  • For Pete’s Sake

The Bells know an agent when they see one.

  • that guy

    big b-
i am aware that fballfn has a close relationship with big daddy butler. and i wouldnt question the whole situation situation with PP if i hadnt encountered its sketchyness first hand…

but if there is nothing incorrect going on then why defend so much…why not just let people say what they want..

he literally has a defense for every statement directed toward him, im wondering why

  • that guy

im not the ignorant unaware blogger

  • putmein

If you want to read my post, it will cost $9.00 a month…

  • Big B

I think he defends him cause he considers him a friend also. If people were putting out derogatory, false and misleading statements and comments about a friend of yours that YOU KNEW were untrue would you not defend him? He just wants people to hear the positive side of the story-not just the side given by people who believe everything they hear from people who have never talked to the man or some reporter from NY who spoke to him for a few minutes once!! It cracks me up that the haters on here will believe people who don’t know Butler over people who do actually know him!!!

this song rocks zo much cuz itz zo cool

  • http://jonasbrothersbiocc.blogspot.com/ Deshaun Burks

I love The Jonas Brothers so much!! this song is awesome!!

  • Ari

Brian rocks! He’s doing something wonderful for the youth in this State. I know him first hand and hes so passionate about helping and training these children for more then just a scholarship, hes teaching them life lessons. Brian was doing this when he was scraping money to get these kids to different camps and see colleges..Brian does this because he loves the game and more importantly he understands that the youth is our future and wants to do everything to set them up for SUCCESS! I’ve been around Brian for a long time and know what hes in this for! He’s in it for the love..Anyone who disagrees with that has a right to their opinion..But I have one question for you…What part are you playing in the youth of America’s future? It takes a village, and honestly I see a bunch of people talking about what he’s not doing instead of the positive of what he is doing and the impact he’s having on a bunch of children..This is what’s wrong with America, everyone talks and no action behind it. We need more people that are like Brian, simply silent with the jibber jabber and put their money where their mouth is..enough said

  • Ari

And I’d like to add that I’m so pumped at his accomplishments and know that he is a blessing for these children and he’s definitely the right one for the job! My son is in the 6th grade and I cannot wait till Brian can hopefully train him. The first thing he asked my son was..What are your grades? Why do you have a C? Talked about how important grades are and schooling because that is your future, doesnt sound like someone who is in it for themselves to me…Brian teaches discipline, strength, trust, hardwork, passion, team work, giving back, to be humble, respectful, honest, teaches to have fun, love what you do, TEACHES SCHOOL COMES FIRST, and he teaches this all with one thing leading him…GOD! I know that this is great for our community and the fact is the one’s who are being negative are sitting at home, bitter about life i say stop being bitter and go out and live your dream, or help someone else fulfill theirs. We waste too much time and energy being negative. Make a change, instead of blogging negatively, why don’t you go shadow Brian and see what he does on any given day? Formulate ur own opinion by setting the foundations on facts, and only you can gain those facts by first hand knowledge..Brian keep doing what you do, push forward, shun away from all this negativity..God BLESS YOU
