Championship recap

What a weekend it’s been. The Wichita area scored two state champs in Wichita Heights and Wichita Collegiate boys. But there was a lot of excitement around the state.

Let’s get the recap started:

In Class 6A girls

Washburn Rural wins 57-47 over Olathe South, dominating this game from the start. It was a balanced attack for the Junior Blues, and while Olathe South tried to get back into it, they weren’t hitting their shots, but Rural certainly was. Maggie Holmberg had 16 points for Rural.

In Class 6A boys

Wichita Heights beats Wichita Southeast 73-58 in an All-City League final, the first since 1995 when Northwest and South met at then-Henry Levitt Arena. Heights dominated this game — shooting 48.1 percent, outrebounding Southeast by 13, hitting 7 of 10 from three-point range. Southeast struggled, hitting only 33.8 percent of their shots. This was a tough game to predict a winner, but I don’t think anyone expected a blowout by either team. Joe Auer finally gets a state championship, winning Heights’ first since 1977.

In Class 5A girls

Bishop Miege beats Great Bend 69-48 in a game that was close for only the first quarter. Bishop Miege wins its 16th state title. Wow. Terry English is the man.

In Class 5A boys

Highland Park wins on a last-second shot, beating Bishop Miege. It’s the third straight title for Highland Park. What a run for the Scots.

In Class 4A girls

Concordia beats Topeka Hayden 59-52. Hayden was a surprise to be in that game, but they made it intereseting, that’s for sure.

In Class 4A boys

Basehor-Linwood comes away with the 53-48 victory over Girard. Not an outcome that I expected. I thought Girard had this game after it beat Hayden.

In Class 3A girls

Southwestern Heights beats Wichita Collegiate 65-59. Collegiate finished third last year, second this year.

In Class 3A boys

The Collegiate boys end a perfect season with a 55-52 victory over Sabetha. What a way to end the year. An exciting game and perfection.

In Class 2A girls

St. Marys rolls over Ellis 60-46. Could St. Marys be the only team to win both boys and girls?

In Class 2A boys

St. Marys beats Pittsburg Colgan 56-55 to get that double title.

In Class 1A girls

St. John caps a heck of a season by beating South Gray 46-35.

In Class 1A boys

Hanover boys beat Quinter 53-47, capping a perfect season.

Did you see a great game? Are you sad that your team didn’t win? Are you happy that your team did win? Let’s hear about it.

WHY TO GO SCOTS ON A GOOD YEAR

  • BBallFan

Hey Joanna, how bout an all tournament team? 5A and 6A

  • FBallfn

Called Heights before the 1st tip of the season and will also state again that for the most part SE just goes 1 on 1 and doesnt run a offense to speak of.Heights with Evan Wessel at the controls runs an offense that is under control and smooth. Ellis looked like a freshman for most of the game and they still were in control of the game. Next year my bet is he wont let that happen and this group should win 1 or 2 more state titles. Well done boys !

  • Jefferson

Ellis had 20 rebounds. I wish I had a freshman on my team that put up stats like that.

  • Matt

Ellis had 9 points and 20 rebounds, what a player, an entire team effort…. Ellis got hammered inside, I thought some fouls should have been called on some of the beating he was taking, but hey, it all worked out. Very impressive. Heights made SE look like they werent ready. The seniors led the way as they should, watch out this team is young. Good job Heights.

  • Kelly E.

I saw the 3A title games, and they were great games. Collegiate girls ran to a 10-point lead in the 2nd quarter, but SW Heights made up the margin with inside play and scoring and near flawless foul shooting. Vivian Oliviera refused to let her team lose, and she proved it late when it mattered most. The Mustangs held a #45 jersey aloft when they got the trophy; must have been playing for somebody special that I don’t know about. Great job, Mustangs. I tell you, Collegiate’s Aisha Woods is going to be a great player in the next two seasons. Whoever she plays for in college will be honored to have her.
The boys game had everything you would want in a championship atmosphere and it was electric. Sabetha’s #25 was literally carrying his team, and the Spartans couldn’t stop him in the first half. But in the second half, they double- and triple-teamed him when he got the ball, and it worked. Collegiate won this game on guts and great defense when it mattered. A second straight 3A title and 26-0 to go with it. Collegiate, I’m happy for you; you deserved and earned this title. Congratulations!

I think the 5-a tournament needs to be moved out of topeka its favored Highand Park more or less playing at home its a big advantage! Play a state somewhere beside topeka every year do we need to call it the High Park invitational!

  • http://kansas.com topcity

they will not moved it out of topeka people do not one to go some were eles just to see there team playa

  • http://kansas.com topcity

it been in topeka for a long time as for ass i kown i think it will say in topeka

  • again?

Why keep saying he played like a freshman? How many freshmen did you see out on the court this weekend helping their team to a title. He does get hammered and the offense definitely doesn’t run through him. If a set play is set up for that, watch out for this young team. The guards will get better and play like a team. They were a good team, not just based on thier class! Congrats to Coach and Team!

  • Big Buff

We had a goood season! After gatting beat for a third time I have to take my hat off to the champs! They played well and beat everyone they needed to for the title. They will be good for years to come.

Good Luck to all of the Southeast Seniors!

We will be back next year.

  • It’s a TEAM

Your cohort, Lutz, states in his account they don’t win if it weren’t for the seniors. In all actuality, they don’t win if the TEAM didn’t play to win. All the attention on Ellis and all of his 20 rebounds makes it possible for the seniors to follow through and do VERY well. Dreamius Smith being a game-changer and doing the little things makes a HUGE difference! All the attention given to Ellis allows the game to open up for everyone to be a part of the TEAM! Heights had a lot of turnovers, but the hustle of the TEAM to make up for that made a HUGE difference!

  • Fan

It’s way to early but will Ellis be the best basketball player to ever come out of the Wichita area?

  • http://none no

Bishop Miege and Collegiate win all of their state titles because they can recruit, which isn’t fair to the other schools.

Went to the 3A games–the #45 was for the player that would have been there wearing that jersey had her father not been killed in a farming accident earlier that week. Sat behind some grandparents of a SWH player–nice fans! WCS band was great thanks for the entertainment and the games were both AWSOME!!! Both teams represented their schools brilliantly and with class–I do think that private schools do have a bit of an edge over your public school systems…in public schools especially in small rural communities…you get who you get and there isn’t anyone from across town that you can get…How about the private schools playing in their own system–there is enough of them in Kansas to do so? Just a thought.

  • BBALLFAN

miege wins state titles because they play as a team and they have a very good coach this guy knows how how to make good adjustments and settle his kids down and finish congrats coach english and your team

  • Just another bb fan

Great schools, great players, great coaches…not trying to take anything away from anyone…but it is what it is. Every great coach would love to have a great move in…difference is that in the private school setting, they get brought in by the school…in a public school, it is just where their family lands.

Even though Highland Park won in Topeka, it was challenged. It won the semi-finals and finals on last-second shots.

  • http://kansas.com topcity

hp will be good next year to

  • BBall A

Highland Park didn’t win the semi-finals. The refs handed them the game when they gave them the ball back after their player knocked it out of bounds with maybe 11 seconds left. No one really knows who would have won. If the last call had been called correctly and Central had gotten the ball back, as they should have, who knows how it would have ended up? Seems the championship game went the same way for them.

  • TigerLilyJK

    Wow – well done, Falcons.

To all who doubted: Told you! (Or – as we say in Georgia – “Toad’ja!”
