Well, the swine flu has hit high school athletics. Check out the stories below from the Associated Press. The first came out today (Thursday) on Alabama. The second is from Wednesday in regards to Texas.

So I saw that the Royals’ Zack Greinke is on the cover of SI. To me that’s crazy because it was only a few years ago that he was playing for the Wranglers (remember them?) and I was covering the team. I always liked him, probably because he was just a little odd. Those are usually my favorite people.
So what I want to know today — and, as always, feel free to take this open discussion any way you want — what are your favorite magazine covers? Do any stick out? Whether it’s Time, Teen Beat (wasn’t that its name?) or Sport magazine (remember that? My brother used to cut out pictures from that magazine and hang them in his room).

I just found this story on the Web site of the Kansas City Star, our sister paper. A high school baseball player was hit by a wild pitch. The pitchhit him just below his helmet. The player collapsed, and was pronounced brain dead two days later.

Here’s some updated signings:
As we had in the paper on Tuesday, Joe Mitchell — an All-State selection from Southeast — is heading to Hutchinson. I’m not all that surprised by that because at our All-State luncheon, he and his family talked about Hutch and Steve Eck. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him end up at WSU in the future.

There are two big matchups on Friday.
Northwest and Bishop Carroll square off at Westurban in a 4:30 p.m. doubleheader, while Goddard goes to Maize for two games starting at 4.
The forecast calls for thunderstorms the rest of the week, so I’m pretty skeptical about getting these games in.
These four teams are arguably the best that the area has to offer, with Andover Central and Mulvane in the mix as well. Maize is undefeated while Carroll, Goddard, and Northwest all have one loss.
So who do you like?
Can the Carroll pitching staff match the Northwest hurlers? Is Goddard’s pitching staff deep enough to hand Maize its first loss?

So I talked to several people about the artificial turf that will be going in at the Wichita public school’s football fields (and be used for soccer, practices, P.E. classes). I know that many athletes and coaches are disappointed that the 2009 season might be on grass, still, because of this setback. Here’s the story. I’m curious about your thoughts.
While you’re at it, which would you prefer — grass fields to artificial turf?

Tonight the Goddard track, soccer and volleyball athletes will be holding a clinic for Special Olympics athletes at 6 p.m. at its sports complex. (If it’s raining, it will go inside.)
This is a very cool event, and there’s nothing better than seeing the smiles on all the athletes’ faces — Goddard athletes or Special Olympians.

Another rainy day, perfect for sleeping in and watching movies all day. If you could stay at home and not have to do any work — for your job, school or around the house — what would you do?
I would sit back and watch Madagascar 2, maybe Rocky 3, the Office episodes from last night, fall asleep to Sandlot (while my kids and husband watch it), read a book, and definitely not cook. Now that sounds like a great day!
Ah well, it’s about time to get the kids to school and me to work. Sigh.
