It’s another full sports page today for high school. Northwest swim coach Doug Vannaman is retiring, North’s Liz Strother was the Getting to Know feature, Newton gets the love in track, Maize wins big in soccer, Goddard beats Heights in soccer, Rose Hill does the same to Andover Central.

We’ve got track regionals today and make sure you check out varsitykansas.com for more track results than you can ask for. The way we do it is so cool.

We’ll of course put up the results as we get them, but then for Sunday’s paper, we’ll have them in the coolest format. Each class and each event will be put in order from best time/distance on down. So you can see where you or anyone ranks from 1-16 in each event based on what was done at regionals. It’s a ton of work, we rely on all the track sites to get us the info, but it is a beautiful thing if you truly care about track. I can’t tell you the number of people who tell me they take this to the state track meet. So check it out.

I’ll be heading to Augusta for a track regional, Jonathan’s going to Emporia and Taylor Eldridge will be at Northwest. Who should we be checking out?

It was a busy soccer day yesterday. In 5-1A, Kapaun took care of business, so did Rose Hill over Andover Central. In 6A, Derby lost, while Goddard beat Heights and Maize took its revenge on Northwest with an 8-1 win. Quarterfinals are on Tuesday.

Who were you most impressed with in soccer? Who will advance out of quarters?

Is that enough to discuss or what? If not, you tell me, 30 SPF? 50 SPF or not at all?

Joanna, in girls soccer 5A-1A, I’d have to say #13 Hutch beating #1 Trinity! What an upset!! In 6A locally, I would have never thought Maize would blowout NW the way they did! Some crazy games and some crazy games left!

Your question about who will advance out of quarter final action and go to State… In 6A locally, I’ll go with Maize over Garden City and Goddard over TWR.

Blonde girl from the North, 50SPF

Jim — I call it a bronze tan! Bronze. Not burned. But I wear the highest I have. Today it’s the zoo with the kindergarten class — should be interesting.

Definitely the SPF 50. I have more freckles on my arms and legs than I care to admit. I am “fashionably” pale. Gotta stay away from that black lipstick though.

Zoo with kindergarten – we want a report on this. My baby is in kindergarten next year and I get to start all over on that stuff. When I went with my oldest’s class, I had a kid take off on me. That was not fun.

I love all the coverage today. Love it. And looking forward to all the regional track results. State swimming today!!!

Someone please explain to me how the teams are re-seeded?

Great article on the Rose Hill – Andover Central Game! Some nice recognition for some of the players that are flying under the radar.

  9. Mally says:

The teams are reseeded by record with the school colsest to the south/west region moving over. In this case Washburn moves over with Maize, Goddard, and Garden City. Their records then effect the new seedings for who you play in the next round.

Thanks, I couldn’t figure out how TWR was now in our bracket.

Off topic again, leave it to me.

LadyLionsFan – I heard on the radio that Rod Stewart’s excuse for his “off” performance on AI the other night was because he’s 64 years old.

What??? I know people in their 60s that not only can dance well, but don’t look like they are drunk while doing it. Your post yesterday made me laugh.

    Swim mom,

Yeah, I think ole’ Rod needs to call AA! :0)

Your posts always crack me up, great stress relief…thanks!

Will anybody be covering the 6A track regionals @ Washburn Rural, which probably on paper is one the most competative Regions in the State?

  14. Joanna says:

HSSportsfan — we won’t have anyone there. The track regionals that we’re at include Augusta, Emporia and Northwest. All the track sites have been contacted, though, to get us the results. Our plan is to have the results in the paper.
Swim mom — the zoo trip was successful. I didn’t lose anyone. Thank God. I only heard — I’m hungry and Will you buy us something — about 786 times. But I dealt with it.
All right, I’m off to cover track now. I might just stay inside all day on Saturday.

I want to hear from Swim Dad about how STATE is going…

  16. Swim Dad says:

What a great day! I’ve never seen so many Speedo LZR Racers in one building.

Emma Reaney scratched. One of the girls on our team said she had strep. So I’m sorry to report that there will be no Nikki Daniels/Emma race.

Elizabeth Strother had a very strong 100 Free. She’s in the final in both 100 and 200 Frees. Bailey Beins – same in the 100 Fly and 100 Back. Kara Aaby for NW went sub 1:00 in the 100 Back, so I think she made the final, too.

Nikki swam something like 1:02.95 in the 100 Breast and had easily the best prelim time. Kelsey Schultz (Maize) swam 1:07.9-ish and made the final. I think Rebecca Swank of Trinity had the top 500 Free prelim.

Lots of Wichita area girls made top 16 and get to swim tomorrow.

Last year, 55.54 got you in the final for 100 Free, and I told my kid if she swam 54-anything she would probably make it. She cut a personal best 54.4-something and missed the final by .07. C’est la vie. She’ll get a chance tomorrow to go 53 in the consolation. Not bad for a freshman. :)

Coolest moment of the day: one of the KC area schools (Blue Valley NW, I think) set a state record in the 4×50 free relay at 1:38.30 (previous record was about 1:38.40) only to see SM East go 1:38.00 in the very next heat. “Hey Mom, we had the state record for about 3 minutes.”

I’m recounting all this from memory, so my apologies to anyone I missed.

    More fun tomorrow!

Swim Dad I just commented on the other post, asking about Emma Reaney. That would stink to work all season then have to scratch. It happens. But still, it would suck.

Yeah, I saw Nikki’s time was almost a second faster than last week at league. Holy LZR! She is peaking at just the right time.

That is so neat about records falling. It is always a thrill to see something like that.

Can’t wait for your update about finals. Thanks for the inside scoop.

LadyLionsFan, is it going to be Goddard and Maize, again this season, going through to the State Semi’s in girls soccer?
Hopefully I’ll make it back in time on Tues. night to watch these games!
