I don’t have anything against the smaller class schools, but I enjoy the flair and style that the bigger schools bring. There were plenty of funny t-shirts and more than enough mohawks this morning. But I’ve seen a Kid a Play style flat-top, a kid with his distance shaved in his head and a relay team give a basketball ball-style, pre-race chant. I love this kind of stuff.

Kaylie Clark of Garden Plain won the Class 3A javelin title. Despite coming in with the shortest distance in her heat (118-8), Clark won the competition with a throw of 128-3. Heidi Brown of Southwestern Heights finished second (127-8) and Cheryl Seiwert of Conway Springs finished third (118-11).

Clark advanced to the finals on her first throw. That gave her the confidence to overtake Brown on the last throw of the competition.

It’s hot.

Any suggestions on beating the heat? I’ve been walking around and have seen people with battery operated fans, using headbands to keep wet towels on their foreheads and overcrowding  the shade areas.

I thought wearing a sweat-resistant undershirt would be good enough, but tomorrow I’ll need to do a little more.
