Collegiate is dissed
June 30, 2009 @ 1:27 p.m. by Joannaby joanna
I’ve got a story going in Wednesday’s paper about how Collegiate, which won’t be in a league after the 2009-10 school year because eight teams pulled out of the MCAA, was denied a league assignment hearing.
Collegiate wanted a hearing and then wanted to be assigned to a league. Pratt got a hearing but was denied and assignment.
Collegiate would love to get into the AV-CTL or the CPL, but neither wants to add teams. The AV-CTL has 24 teams and is adding Maize South this fall, while Goddard’s new high school opens in 2011.
I would imagine that Andover isn’t too far away from getting another high school. I know that district doesn’t want its schools too big, and Central is already 5A.
The CPL has 10 teams and doesn’t want to add any more teams.
How much does Collegiate’s status as a private school and its success in athletics hurt its chances? I’d say a lot.

I have been assured that both Andover schools will be 5A this fall and that Andover will be bigger than Central.

City league is a great place for them.
I do not think their success has anything to do with a league not wanting them. However, I think the fact that they are a private school does. Most public schools the size of Collegiate do not want compete for titles against private schools because of the disparity of the rules regarding eligibility.
In the larger school classifications that advantage is negated by the number of students attending the public schools.
So if you put them in the City league neither side has a real advantage.

Collegiate doesn’t want to play in the city league because that wouldn’t allow them to pad the stats of their recruited D-1 wannabes. If they want a league to accept them the answer is simple…cut the recruited players and their coach daddys/employee mommys loose and stop recruiting in the future! Either pay or play somewhere else!!

Putting them in the City League would only affect their regular season win/loss percentage. As long as they limit their enrollment so they can stay in 3A, they’ll still win State Championships, they just won’t be undefeated when they hit sub-state.

wiseowl — please, please show me where I’d say I’d be surprised to see Collegiate join the CPL. I have no desire to dog the CPL or any other team. Ever. And certainly no team is too good to be in any league. But every team deserves to be in a league.
I will say now, although I didn’t say it up top in my original post, that I’d be surprised to see Collegiate join any league without being placed there. In regards to the AV-CTL and the CPL, neither one wants to add more teams, as I’ve been told by people associated with both leagues.

Joanna, the AVCTL is too unwieldy. Some schools would be better fits in other leagues. The two Salina schools would probably be better off in the Centennial League, and move Emporia to the Frontier League, since it’s doubtful they’ll be 6A again. Hutchinson ought to join the WAC. Then again, you wouldn’t be happy if the Salthawks had to travel to Hays and Liberal.
I’ve suggested Pratt try to draw out other schools, such as Chaparral, Cheney, Medicine Lodge and Kingman to form a new league. Andale would also be a candidate. What would have made sense is for Pratt to get in with Halstead, Haven, Hesston, Nickerson and Smoky Valley, who are all leaving the MCAA.
Teams looking for placement in leagues will continue. The next to have this problem will be Smith Center. In 2008, the North Central Activities Association voted unanimously (7-0) to reject Smith Center should the Redmen ask to join if the Mid-Continent League should break up. Norton and Phillipsburg may be in the same predicament now that Colby and Goodland have found a new league. That’s an area with a bunch of 8-man school and nothing else until you get to the I-70 corridor and south.

I just don’t get the whole “recruiting” theory that people have in regards to Collegiate. On last years boys basketball and football teams if you had actually seen them play, I’d like to know which kids you think were recruited to play. All I have seen for lack of a better term “were averaged size white kids” who have obviously worked hard and been coached into developing good teams. Please give me one kid in the last 5-6 years that have been head and shoulders above anyone they have competed with. Thow in the fact of high academic standards in order to stay eligible and I argue how Collegiate has all these advantages that everyone speaks of.

every student that attends a private school has been recruited to some degree. Not necessarily for athletics. It only gives them an advantage if if they choose to recruit for athletics. The rules permit that and there is nothing wrong with it.
However, since the rules permit it for private schools and not public schools then public schools are completely justified in not wanting to compete against private schools for a league title.
I also would disagree that the academic standards to compete are higher at a private school than at most public schools.

OH PLEASE!!
Everybody knows who has been recruited and is on scholarship at Wichita Collegiate on both the boys teams and girls teams. Some of them HAVE been head and shoulders above their competition but obviously not all of them are going to be the next Deangelo Evans or Chris Harper!
The main problem is hiring their dads to coach them or hiring their parents in some other capacity. This is an obvious conflict of interest and a bare naked violation of kshsaa rules! The heck of it is they don’t even need to recruit to be good. All they have to do is simply coach their indigenous population! It seems however, that they are addicted to recruiting.
Wichita Collegiate had better start taking care of their paying customers or their campus is going to end up being an office park!! There is no way to sustain it as a viable business if half the kids are paying net zero and half are paying full tuition to support them and their athletic endeavors.

I have no problem with KMC or BC being in the City league. As I have said on here many times, I believe the unquestionable advantage that private schools have, is negated in the larger schools. So the City league is a good place for them.
My point was that a league consisting of all private schools may be a good idea and there are enough private schools in the area to support it.

They like it the way it is were they can beat up on Bluestem, Douglass and Belle Plaine. I had four neices and nephews go to school at Bluesteam some played sports and some didn’t. I always asked the question what the heck is Bluestesm doing in the CPL, I never got a answer. Drop Bluestem and Douglass and add Collegiate to the CPL.

I don’t know all the details about Collegiate.
But it seems to me that we are missing the most important issue here…….
What about the KIDS?
What will happen to them? Is this fair to them? How does this impact seniors?
When other schools have had major changes that impact the students, they usually have a transition periods.
Now that Maize is opening a new high school, they intentially did not force seniors to move so as not to disrupt everything about the their school life.
There will be no seniors at the new high school this year.
They are allowing their students to transition to the new school.
It’s extremely tough being a teenager.
Is the KSHAA doing the right thing and the best thing for those kids there?
Shouldn’t they change their policies over a period of time so that the incoming freshman will know, in advance, the situation of the athletic program.
How is this fair to the kids who are already involved?
They can’t exactly transfer to another school and be eligible, can they?
Are some of these kids children of your doctor or perhaps other medical specialist? Do you appreciate what your doctor does for you do you really want to hurt his family?
Some of these parents are probably community leaders.
What about the Golden Rule?

bbfan, the bottom line is that KSHAA allowed Collegitate and all the other private schools in the state to join. They now have the responsiblity of acting fairly toward all the schools. What they are doing to Collegiate in not fair. If KSHAA, or if you, want to lobby KSHAA to seperate public and private that is fine. But that is not the situation that curently exists and KSHAA needs to act fairly. You also continue to say that public schools do not recruit kids for athletic purposes and I know that to not be true. Several kids I have coached were recruited by several public high schools. They went on to play at high schools whose districts the did not live in.

There is an obvoius disadvantage between Public and Private schools. Show me any public school (or two) that has won 61 State Championships in the last 18 years like Collegiate. In class 5A 44% of the State Championships the last 10 years have been won by private schools (which makes up less than 12% of the teams, Bishop Miege bounce back and forth between 4A and 5A).
Kansas needs to adopt the same rules as other states and have private schools play up one division (Colligiate would be 4A) and the number of scholarshiped athletes should not exceed the school average for non-athletic scholarships.
