Name your favorite coach
July 1, 2009 @ 11:39 a.m. by Joannaby joanna
There’s always someone getting dogged on the blog, and some people seem to get the heat more than others. But then there are other athletes and coaches who just don’t even get mentioned in a negative light.
So that’s what I want to talk about — the people you like.
There are coaches who have been successful and yet don’t seem to be well-liked. Then there are coaches who have had mediocre careers who are extremely well-liked.
So name a coach you like. If you want to take it national, fine. But I’d love to keep it local. Brag on your coach. By the way, this is not meant as an avenue to completely rip people. You all know how I feel about such negativity.
Feel free to talk about a coach in what you like about this person as a coach or as a person.
I’ll get it started with a coach who I think is one of the nicest people out there. It’s new Northwest girls basketball coach Jim Mernagh. The guy is just nice. He’s always got a kind word, he’s low-key and his wife, Rita, the Bishop Carroll volleyball coach, is the same way.

Jeff Lutz — please back up your comment. Tell us why.
And I know you really are Jeff Lutz because of course Weston is the first name from you.
Not a bad pick, though. Although he doesn’t call me as much as he used to, Weston has always been the type to talk about anything and everything.

Mike Darrah- current Head Men’s soccer coach at Maize. Has a good rapport with all his players, past and present. Is not afraid to talk with them about Jesus Christ and what matters in life. The door is always open to his players to communicate whether it be at school, home or on the field. My favorites as a player in High School had to be Billy Means and Bruce DeHaven of Southeast. Both great coaches as far as knowing the game of basketball and football, but you wanted to bust your tail the whole time you were playing for them! They knew how to motivate and encourage you as a player and a person. They could be as hard as heck on you and sometimes push you to the limit, and knew how to get every ounce of potential out of each individual player! Great coaches and men! I used to see coach Means around town here in Wichita. Always a big grin on his face when he’d greet you! Coach DeHaven, the last time I saw him was on T.V. on the Dallas Cowboy’s sideline. Made it big through the NFL coaching ranks I believe as a special teams coach.

I enjoy Weston because I can routinely beat him in Wii tennis, yet he’ll still buy me pizza. And for Weston, a notorious tightwad, that’s impressive.

Weston, ever since he was little was a competitor! Did’nt matter what you were playing, checker’s, cards, kick-ball, didn’t matter, he wanted to win and then talk some smack afterwards! Just don’t ever get him started on the Green Bay Packers! He is a good coach!

Bruce Dehaven is a great choice. I had him as a coach the first five years of his coaching career, just after he graduated from Southwestern.
Great motivator and really cared about his kids.

My son really liked Larry Becker and Craig Broadbent with Maize football. Both made him work hard, taught him the finer points of the game and positions, didn’t use a lot of foul language, and taught him what it meant to be a respectable honorable man.

Coach Brian Chadwick, I feel he brings the best in his girls during track season. Doesn’t have the best, but does his best to make them the best. This year for example took fourth in state in the girls 4×100 with three sophmores and one freshman. And one of the sophmores has only ran track the past two years. No AAU expreince or nothing. Awesome job Coach Chadwick.

hha sportsfan101: thats what i’m talkin about! lol
but i would probly have to go with our derby jr coaches for the blue devils back in the day. matt liston and jimmy queen. without them we wouldnt know anything about character, sportsmanship and just the basic’s of being a team and playing the right way. they taught us a lot. and by we i mean the 6 people that are on the varsity football team. the 1 that starts for olathe north. another that starts OL for east, who is actually Big B’s son lol. another who is starting saftey in south carolina i think. the 4 that are on the varsity basketball team. and the 4 that start for the varsity baseball team. so it was a pretty talented group of kids. my point is, without those two great coaches these guys would’nt be as good of players. if that makes any sense

If we are including youth sports Kirk Westmoreland and Troy Scott are 2 of the best football coachs period . 15+ years 20games a year and 90+ win% . Coaching and teaching teams without even having a kid on the team. I would agrue that the staffs they put together are higher quality than a lot of high school programs. This state needs more coachs like these 2 .

I’ll second JJ’s Bill Means. “You get up under their cage and knock em stem windin” OMG, the three a days at SE in 100 degree heat was made only made better by Coach Means. Hardest and most demanding coach I ever played for, and when I started a career and family was I ever thankful for the lessons he tought me about discipline and hard work. I see him on occassion and he’s still Coach to me. As the son of a single mother he made a great impact on my life. Years later my mother told me about some of their personal conversations about me and he assured her that they would make me a better a man for the experience. Coach, thanks for all you did and continue to do.

Westons favorite coach could also be his little league baseball coach John Simon who used to call him “pretty boy” when he wouldn’t stay down on a ground ball lol. Dan Johnson is probably in his top 5 too.

It would be just like you to claim some kind of victory. The real losers are those that talk about winning but never come through. I get the feeling that is you Cracky. If I bore you so much why don’t you run along and try to show the rest of the bloggers your so called knowledge of anything sports related. You can’t because the truth is beyond insulting people you can’t logically post anything about sports because you never played them. Heck I am betting if someone threw you a ball it would smack you in your big nose. But hey I am game if you want to keep on playing this game of smack talk I will match your so called smack. You should follow KSFOOTBALL’s advice from a few blog topics ago and find something else to do because this is a game you can’t win. But you already know that because you have never won at anything.
