Best high school helmets

Do you have a favorite school logo? What about a favorite school helmet. Remember a few years back when Northwest had the U of Michigan helmets? Which do you prefer.

As a former North High Redskin, i do not understand the native american mascot issue – i was proud of my school and its history – a very unique building, architecture and history….GO REDSKINS!

Go ask a Native American if they want to be called a Redskin or used as a mascot. It doesn’t have anything to do with buildings or architecture. Here is a mascot idea, a school can have Crack as the mascot and they could put a trash eating bum on their helmets with flies swarming around them.

I love Norton’s helmets. That lemon-drop yellow stands out beautifully. Ellsworth’s logo may be copied from the University of Cincinnati, but it works.

As 1/3 Native American 1/3 Japanese and 1/3 Wookie i think it must be doen tastefully and embracing the traditions of the past people.

Redskins or Redmen are not done tastefully no matter how much you want to argue that point. Indians might not cross the line, but I bet Native Americans really love the Hays High football team coming out of the locker room through a blow up tepee. Call it politically correct or whatever, but most Native Americans do not embrace their traditions being used as fodder at sporting events.

Not all of the Seminole Indian tribe share that opinion nanny nunchucks. If you go back and read my post most but not all Native Americans do not like being mascots. Some think it is okay. Do some more research on the topic and you will find out.

If i went to your neighborhood with a baby rabbit and i went door to door asking hey should i kill this baby rabbit? most would say no, but if i expanded the area to include all of Wichita i would probably find at least one person who hates rabbits.

I grew up in Riverside and was surrounded by North High people my entire life. I’m proud to have graduated from North as a Redskin.
I assure you, there was NEVER, EVER any disrespect intended to Native Americans.
We (everyone I know!) meant it (the term, Redskins) to honor the tradition of Native America.
This tradition thing is HUGE deal at North! Always has been – hope it always will be!
This issue came up recently and there were some Native American North High graduates stating that they were fine with the term.
I’m part Swedish and I would be honored if Lindsborg called their football team The Swedes, with a Swedish type logo. (Maybe they do – I don’t know!)

As I have stated, some Native Americans are fine with it others are not. The use of redskins is a negative term. The use of swede is not negative, the use of Seminole is not negative if the Seminole people have approved it which the Florida band have (the Oklahoma band are a little less reticent). I am sure all North High School graduates feel the same way you do, but that does not mean it is right. Go to a powwow at the Wichita All-Indian center and do the tomahawk chop and start screaming redskins, then find out what happens.
Look this is a divisive topic and I respect those people who want to argue their side legitimately like Janice. Unfortunately, many people are still disrespectful of Native American people after 500 years.

Typical that you reference cartoons in the same vein as a serious topic. So at what high school is a black man or a latin american a mascot? Historically, redskins is a derogatory term, just as the derogatory term for a black person should not be used so shouldn’t that term for a Native American. You don’t get it, it is just not a word. Hence, the reason the NCAA has forced several institutions to get rid of the nicknames and mascot. The NFL team can’t be forced to remove the name because they are a private enterprise as deemed by the Supreme Court.

I’m not one to get in the middle of arguments. Usually.
But on this topic, I have cousins who are half-Cherokee, and concerning the use of Redskins, it’s not about having a thicker skin. It’s about a word that has long held negative connotations to a race of people.
As a white person, I have not been on the receiving end of such racism based on the color of my skin, although I know that it does happen both ways. I fully understand that such words do hurt because of those connotations.
It can be easy to say just get over it. It’s not that simple.
