ESPN Rise picked the best football rivalry games in each state. And the Kansas winner is . . .

KANSAS

Abilene vs. Chapman

These neighboring schools have been playing since 1892 in the oldest rivalry west of the Mississippi River.

I haven’t heard a lot about this rivalry, but since they have been going against one another for over 100 years, I can see why ESPN Rise picked this one.

Do you think they got this one right? If not, who would you have chosen?

Though a couple of teams got started on Friday, most of the area will start the 2009 season on Tuesday.

Kapaun Mount Carmel at Andover will be one of the best Tuesday matchups.

A former co-worker of mine knows the majority of Kansas high school mascots, can name the Super Bowl winners and their MVPs in order.

Football starts this week, finally. The opener on Thursday will be excellent with Kapaun at Northwest. Will Kapaun surprise Northwest? Kapaun is definitely improved, but Northwest is a loaded team with Demarcus Robinson. What’s your pick?

We’ve also got Rockhurst (Mo.) at Hutchinson (Rockhurst beat Hutch last year in the opener to end Hutch’s winning streak) on Friday. And Andover is at Buhler — two of the top 4A teams in the state will face off right away. Heights is at Bishop Carroll, too.

That’s an awfully good slate of games, and that’s just a few.
