Districts start this week, and I don’t think it’s a cliche to call it the real season, since really, the first six weeks are practice for this.
Here’s what I’m liking about district play this week — McPherson and Hutch meet, so do Garden Plain and Conway Springs, Buhler and Andale. Huge games in Week 1.
So what are your thoughts on districts? Want to complain about how Kansas does this? Want to talk about how South is, I predict, going to end that long streak of no playoff berths?

Complain about district play in KS surely not ? I have and will pound this point home even though i realize its doing no good whatsoever. We need to do away with league play which is meaningless and go to 8 team districts with 3 noncon games leading . This is such a simple concept and would help make high school football so better . I have heard all of the reasons this wont work and none of them hold water at all.
I agree South is looking like a playoff team this season and they may even win a game in the postseason.

KSFOOTBALL and Joanna, how do the district playoff system and seedings play out for High School football? Is it similar to the way soccer does it, by the different regions in the State and for example in the South Central soccer region, which includes Maize along with the majority of the Wichita 6A schools, has #1 seed playing the lowest #12 seed and so on and so on in the first round. For the most part the 1st round games are nothing, unless you pit a #6 against a #7 or more of an equal opponent against each other, but like the NCAA March Madness tournament, the lesser seeds usually get weeded out in the first round.

KSFOOTBALL, it’s important for these teams to win because it helps with playoff placement.
I know for a fact whoever comes in second between Garden Plain and Conway Springs will likely have to play Wichita Collegiate. That’s not a fun first round game to play.

Amen KSFOOTBALL! You are 100% correct! 8 team districts make scheduling easier, and keep inferior teams from qualifying for post season play. Over the course of 7 district games, the better teams will rise to the top. Plus, more games are meaningful, not just the last 3. The top four teams qualify, cross-bracket 4 vs 1, 3 vs 2, etc, with the top two finishers earning home games, the 3 and 4 teams having to travel. In my opinion, a much better, more meaningful system. Leagues were great back in the day, but state championships are what everyone should be shooting for.

Conway or GP will beat Collegiate so no big deal there.

LOSE; Collegiate is a solid program, so there are no freebees in highschool when two solid programs meet….. that said, GP looks to be the best of all three teams. they certainly can run it down your throat, or simply sit back and pick you apart throwing it too. They do have one of the top receivers in the state. that will give conway a big headache this week. Collegiate can throw it nicely, but lacks the balanced attack that will hurt them in the playoffs. Conway is beastly on the ground again this year, but are simp;ly too one dimentional to succeed deep into the playoffs without a stud like J byrd on the roster to get it done.

They need to change up the district system some how. Let’s take a look at the Hutch, Mac, GB, Hays district. A combined record of 22-2 while you have district like the BC one where you have a team with a terrible record making the playoffs.

JChansler -
First of all, district assignments are supposedly based on regional or geographic alignments by class. If you look at the 5A West district assignments for 2010-2011, it looks much more balanced than what we have currently. see below.
These look good today but you could have a similar imbalance in quality teams 2 years from now as the talent level in each school varies year to year.
District 5 – McPherson, Emporia, Newton, Valley Center
District 6 – Salina-Central, Great Bend, Salina-South, Hays
District 7 – Andover, Andover-Central, Kapaun, Arkansas City
District 8 – Hutchinson, Bishop Carroll, Liberal, Wichita-West

If you do away with league play how do you have three non-league games? :)

I watched Collegiate play last week and they are going to be tough to beat this year. I disagree that they have an issue with its running game. They are superior when it comes to the pass and they bring a tough defense to the field. They had a few weak running plays when I watched them, but all in all they are the team to beat.

from what i can take just by reading it, i think he means that we would conisder the 7 games played during districts as “league” or “conference” and have 3 non conference games before them…..
maybe? am i headed in the right direction?

Possibly.
But in a way, if I’m seeing it right, doesn’t that just turn an eight-team district into a league?
Right now, two teams from each district advance.
How often does a really good team not advance? Not just a team with a nice record or one that’s playing well at the end (thought not that well or it wouldn’t have lost a district game), but a team where you thought, “they could win this?”

I know how the districts are aligned. I just think they need to change the system so somehow a 3 win team doesn’t make it when a 6 win or 7 win team doesn’t. The 8 team districts sound like a good way to go.

How often does a three-win team advance?
And for the ones that did, I’m guessing that somebody in those same districts had five, six or seven wins and didn’t advance because it lost to the three-win team.
Don’t lose to the three-win team.
Win your district. Finish second in your district. If, as some would argue, that the regular season is “meaningless,” then quit worrying about those five or six “meaningless” wins.
