What a night, what a night. Three of the state’s top games were in the Wichita area, and they did not disappoint. Can you ask for anything better? How about — we’ll probably see repeats of these games come semifinal play.

Let’s get the recap started.

I was at Buhler at Andale, and I can tell you that this game was not what I expected in the first half. But it was great all the way around.

Buhler’s Jorden Oden was “held” to 160 rushing yards, and he’s the stud I thought he was. There was a blackout — somehow the stadium lights got turned off, right after an Andale touchdown, a 38-yard interception return by Craig Simon, and it was pitch black. Except for the press box lights. It was freaky, to be sure.

The first half was a defensive battle. Buhler committed four turnovers — a fumble and Jake Reffner was intercepted three times. Andale turned two interceptions into points for the 13-0 lead.

The second half, wow, what a difference. Eight scoring plays, folks. It was back and forth — Andale coach Gary O’Hair said that his neck started to hurt because he was looking up and down the field constantly.

Reffner had a solid second half and finished with 104 passing yards. Andale’s Jake Hattabaugh had 133 rushing yards. I really like this kid. His legs were constantly churning and he was picking up yards after being hit. Fun to watch, let me tell you. I’ll add video of him in the morning.

Buhler scored twice in the final 2 minutes of the game — meaningless points, but they were important for the Crusaders to show that they’ve got the passing game to go with the running game. Those turnovers were way too costly, though.

Saw a strange play tonight — Buhler kicked an onside kick in the final 1:15, the ball bounced right up to Andale’s Allen Trent, who raced into the end zone for a 50-yard score. Crazy play.

OK, moving on. Hutchinson and McPherson was closer than I expected. At least for most of the game, as Hutch turned it into a blowout. By the way, as if we didn’t know, Josh Smith is a major stud. Yeah. He is.

Conway Springs and Garden Plain was a tightly contested game that finished a 6-point victory for Conway. Tough, tough game — as we all expected. This is the only one of the three that I picked wrong. But I have gone on the record that I thought it could go either way. Congrats to Conway.

In other action, Derby beat Southeast. Heights got back on the winning side of things with a 26-point victory over East. South beat North — will this be the year that the Titans get back to the playoffs? Will it? I thought it was last year, then they lost to Campus in the second week of districts. A win this coming week and it’s a given.

Northwest continues to win, as does Carroll (in a Thursday night game). Kapaun whooped up on Ark City (71-14!), and Newton edged Winfield by 3.

Augusta got a win! Ending a 17-game losing streak. Congrats to them with the win over Circle.

Rose Hill beat W. Trinity and Andover Central definitely seems to be back on track with a good, big win over Mulvane.

Hutchinson Trinity continues smack around its opponents, and Sedgwick beat Halstead.

Collegiate handled Douglass and should ease into the playoffs — where the Spartans will meet Garden Plain. Madison and Caldwell continue to roll. Goessel didn’t play St. John’s Military because of an H1N1 outbreak at the military school.

So where were you? What caught your eye? Any impressive performances? Crazy calls? Anything?

Let’s hear about it.

    ok cardfan,

go to catch it kansas and read and watch the video. it clearly shows that braden eck got into the endzone before half.

on the fourth play when brill had that sweep for the TD, on kake it clearly shows a block in the back.

until conway can win without relying on a trick offense and hopeing the defense makes a mistake, then just shut your mouth.

Did see them, but you have to remember this is high school football there is no instant replay. I would be upset to, but what irks me is when CS goes to or wins state there seems to be no media respect. These boys deserve respect, even though Wichita pictures us a HIC town.

  7. OWLS says:

I do agree with you. The cpl is a hard legue and we desirve more credit. But you gotta remember that it takes a good 30mins to get from Wichita to gp, probably longer to Conway , why come 30+mind when they could cover bishop carrol or someone.

  8. sbcoach says:

officials are human, they make mistakes. it’s part of the game. you either learn to shut up and deal with it, or you make a fool of yourself and get kicked out. I hear Derby’s coach got the boot today, would like to know what that was about.

  9. CPL fan says:

Turnovers and penalties cost GP this game. GP ran out of bullets shooting themselves in the foot. Conway made some plays when they needed to, and were for the most part mistake free, and still only won by 6 points. However the officials played a big role in this game. How can a flag happy crew that officiated this game miss a blatant block in the back 6 feet in front of him, reulting in a TD instead of a possible tackle and not throw a flag. And then to miss an obvious TD by #54. Both these teams worked very hard coming into this game, the fans were excited and supportive, but the officiating crew took alot of the allure away from the fans and the players by doing a subpar job. Fans and players from any team would be upset and this crew should be ashamed of themselves for their disgraceful performance. Missed calls such as these have a huge effect on a close hard fought game.

  10. CPL fan says:

sbcoach, you are right, everyone makes mistakes, but I also know there are officiating crews out there who take great pride in doing an outstanding job. But I also know there are crews that don’t put in the time and are consistently poor officials. I know two officials that do high school and small college games and they both work hard to be good at what they do. One of these gentleman told me once, that if these kids and coaches dedicate the time and work to be the best, why shouldn’t the officials.

  11. Panthers44 says:

Derby coach Brandon Clark got ejected from the game for protecting his player. I’m not going to say that the ejection wasn’t justified, but you can’t blame Clark for being upset. On one of Derby’s first offensive plays, Tyler Harrison threw a pass to Hedgepeth which was batted down by Joseph Randle. The corner continued over to blindside hedgepeth after the ball was dead. I respect Clark for trying to protect his players, but he probably could have handled the situation better

I was at the game and watched the video clips. There were calls for both sides that were questionable. There were some ball placements that should have been 1st downs and weren’t. The simple fact is both teams played well. GP’s biggest problem was themselves. GP tackled several times around the head and was off sides several times. It was obvious and can’t be blamed on the officials. There were times when GP should have scored and didn’t. Don’t take anything away from an awesome team, Conway Springs, because you are mad that you lost. Someone had to lose. Conway played well, took advantage of GP’s fumbles and they deserve respect for a hard fought victory.

OOPS, You can whine about the officiating, but it went both ways, all I heard last week was about GP powerful running game, and how good their defense was and how One dimesional Conway Springs is…On the Running Game I beleive Brill had more rushing yards then the entire GP running Game, on the Defense I refer back to Brill and the rest of the Conway backs, and as far as One dimesional goes, they shoved it down your throats all night, if you can’t stop it why change it, that offensive line for Conway was the difference they were winning the battle up front…DEFENSE I beleive 3-4 Goal line stands will prove your defense…Enough said GREAT GAME way to go CARDINALS AWESOME…

In regards to AC over Mulvane I believe anybody could beat Mulvane now. They seem to have gotten worse as the year progresses compliments of the plays being called. Last night was the worst play calling I have ever seen in my entire life.
The plays were comparable to Kingmans no punting strategy.
    I could not believe it.
There were probably at least 7 passes to the end zone to the same corner in double coverage. AC knew exactly what Mulvane was going to do before they even knew it.
Heres a couple for you, Lets do an onside kick on the opening KO, they won’t expect that, Lets go the the End Zone on Fourth and 2 from the Jag 40 to the same corner we’ve been beaten on all night “Just get the first down, forget the heroics” . And what happened on a third and 37 ?
I think that someone has not realized that Tyler Springer and Jordan Gosch are no longer playing .
There were probably at least 7 passes to the end zone to the same corner in double coverage.
Mulvane looked pretty good playing GB in the opener (they did have 11 starters out though) just good FB no hair brained heroic plays.

Did anyone else see or hear of this FIASCO ?

The refs at the Derby vs. Southeast game are the MOST incompetent individuals I have seen in a game. The calls are unnecessary and some of them were wrong calls. SE had the worst calls and penalties! The refs were a bunch of losers! Too bad we don’t have instant replay, cuz Derby would not have won this game.

  26. FBCATFAN says:

Obsessed-I agree 100% with your post. That was the WORST play calling I have ever seen. The middle of the field was wide open, our backs were able to run the ball and get 4-5 yards on each play so why exactly did we continue to throw the ball to the corner? The QB was rushed all night and in turn made some bad choices. Does Mulvane ever want to be a powerhouse program?? How many more years will go on before some big changes are made?

Trinity Academy is a good team, they played Rose Hill to a 0-0 half and 2nd half played good just made some crucial mistakes that caused them the game, if they cut those mistakes down they will make it to the playoffs… they have played 3 of the top teams in the state(Garden Plain, Conway Spring, Rose Hill), so they will be prepared and know whats coming in the last 2 district games

  28. anonymous says:

bigkansas- you must have not been watching the same game the rest of us were watching. the only thing southeast needs to do is become better actors. if you expect to get a pass interference call you either need to act better or be interferred with. the refs were correct in throwing out coach clark so dont say it was one sided. if we would have had instant replay we would have seen alot more infractions from southeast.

    [REPORT A VIOLATION]

  29. Panthers44 says:

Southeast’s entire offensive line was just tackling the Derby d-line throughout the game, they threw the flag one time. So BigKansas, i do think they should have had instant replay, because then Southeast wouldn’t have even got their whopping 60 yards rushing.

Can you sense my sarcasm? I think this Derby defense deserves a ton of credit. They are 180 across on the D-line and still held the best back in the state to 50 yards on the ground. Not to mention they have been extremely tough in the redzone, including 2 goal line stands so far this year and had Plowden not made an amazing play to pitch the ball to Randle as he was falling down, derby would have had another.

I had a close perfect view and i didnt see anything he did that deserved being tossed for but even officials have bad days .

On the play in question the hit was clearly late in the open field and right in front of the official . It was a play that a flag must be thrown on so nobody should be surprised by Clarks reaction.

I watched the game and was amazed of the lack of discipline in GP, after showing all year how they execute…Don’t blame the officials, if GP does what they do, this game isn’t within 21 pts. But, Conway had allot to say about that. They were obviously the better team this night. Bottom line!

The backup QB Tomlinson was able to rally the team, and give them a chace at a win, from what i saw, he needs to be the starter. If he steps into that 40 yard pass, we are all talking about him as the hero for decades to come! Brill showed why he is considered the stud in this conference. GP’s receiver #1 is a Beast. Way to go for all three!

I think GP wins the rematch, if GP can get it together, and get by medicine lodge and Collegiate.

  38. BigKansas says:

They didn’t throw the flag ONE time…..it was several unneccessary calls if you pay attention. Panther44,please watch the game again…Derby score 3 points in the 2H, please! SE scored 6 points, too bad the snap didn’t go well. With less then 4 minutes left, SE had the ball, the play clock was ticking even when they barely got up from the previous play. They had 2 delay of game penalty which was unncessary, because everytime when Derby had the ball, the refs took their time. So please, don’t tell me Derby wasn’t favor….There was calls on both sides when the refs didn’t call (obvious).

  45. KSFOOTBALL says:

Salty SE,s (which i thought preseason would be really good) was horrible so the SmithvRandle debate is impossible to determine by numbers Vs Derbys D.

Big Ks you need to look at your coaching staff on the delay of game calls. We have gotten a few this season but we run the clock down inside 5seconds routinely and get the snap off so dont try to turn that into the officials problem. SE is the worst coached team i have watched this season and if i had a kid on his way or attending that program i would have the relator on the phone real quick!!!

Not sure how long the starter is out for, but I’m thinking GP will be just fine.

Brill was amazing as always. I thought GP would be able to bottle him up, but I was wrong. Kudos to him, and that line. I was right about GP’s receiver, what a stud. He was open all night, no matter who they put on him, big players show up to big games.

Dont get me wrong there are some that no busniess ever being on a field but since WE b!tch about it all of them so much the horrible/corrupt ones get a pass.

Exactly, KSFOOTBALL. Whining about the officials is for losers. How often do you see winners whining? It’s always US that got robbed. Sure, they make mistakes in the course of hundreds of decisions during a game, but playing through any such mistakes is part of what makes a winner.

GP fans you lost get over it! Enough of the excuses. If you knew before the game how awful Conways pass defense then why did you try to run the ball the whole first half? Why all the comments about Conways offense? Let me guess the offense we run is somehow illegal since your boys cannot defend it. Your boys did not execute and made mental mistakes which cost you the game end of story! Maybe KWCH and catch it kansas should just anounce GP the state champions and buy all the fans and players rings this year since you are by far the best team in the state. Champions perform in the big game and figure out ways to win. 6 titles in 10yrs speaks for itself. Go BIG RED!!!

I agree, fans seem to argue every call, and then when there truely are bad calls, they go unnoticed. Is there any means to hold officials accountable for their actions? Most officials do a good job, and you have accept a few bad calls. It’s a challenge to watch every player on the field. They can’t be perfect, but at least for high school football, there should be some means to protest a trend of consistant bad calls in a game. Not to change the game, but to weed out bad officials.

Some comments and questions after some emotion has subsided.
Video shows GP scored but was not called a TD. A tough pill for anyone to swallow. We don’t know if it would have made a difference, but I guarantee if GP would have ran it into the endzone it would have been a no brainer. Props to CS for making it a close call.
GP missed several opportunities to take control of this game, but didn’t. Some were their fault, some were good defense by CS. Very hard fought battle by both teams. I’m not sure either is a state contender, but time will tell. GP will regroup and hopefully learn from their mistakes.
CS fans, Brill is a good athlete, but I didn’t see him doing everything on his own. The O line needs to be patted on the back every once in a while for some darn good blocking.
GP knows how to defend the single wing, they’ve done it before, but if a defense doesn’t execute better than an offense, or vice versa, we all know what happens.
After all the missed opportunities, blown calls, penalties, coaching decisions, and whatever else you want to throw in, all that matters is what the scoreboard says when the clock runs down. CS won.
The backup quarterback was not recruited. (get real) Fact of the matter is he’s the stepbrother of the reciever who caught the first TD pass. Pretty cool for the family.
Question, If all plays out similar to last year, won’t CS have the tougher road in the playoffs ie Scott City, Hutch Trinity, etc? I’m not sure that will provide an opportunity to “roll through the playoffs”
Finally, cards predicts GP will lose 55-7 to Collegiate in the playoffs because GP sucks. Since CS only beat a sucky GP team by 6, how do think CS will rate against a passing machine like Collegiate if they meet in the playoffs?

FBCATFAN: I think we need to look in the direction of the play caller. Now who might that be? Take a look at Andale, a different group of kids comes in every year, but they are consistently good.
What does that tell you? The only one who doesn’t leave is the Coach. I think someone thinks Jordan and Springer are still playing.

I was at the game as an individual looking for a good game. What I saw was two well coached young men fighting for every inch. It was a great game for me to take in.

All officials miss calls from time to time but in my opinion what needed to be called was called. The goalline play is one tough one after looking at the video. One thing that nobody seems to remember or mention is that GP did have a shot to score again after the call was ruled short. Catch it KS makes it sound like the clock ran out after that play. A GP player was not lined up right from the 1 yrd line and they still got a snap off from the 6. Not many people are mentioning that aspect.

Each team had a number of mistakes most likely due to the high pressure and intensity of the game. I watch alot of high school football and am certain that both these teams will be in it at the end. Both towns should be proud of their teams. When these teams play their rematch I will be sure to take the drive once again.

CPL fan: Great post to tone down the rhetoric coming from both teams. I think We saw what will eventually be a great matchup in the substate game, as long as both teams play to their potential. I think what we all can agree on is that BOTH team did not perform up to their expectations. When we went up 19-0, all of us thought we would easily win this one. Boy, we underestimated the passion and desire that GP has. All of us agreed that we dodged a bullet when GP didn’t start that horse of a QB#7. I wondering why we haven’t seen him in past games. Did i hear it right on the news that they are related somehow? Brill is a stud, been getting it done for three years. GP’s Receiver #1 was much better than we thought too. I can’t wait to see the next match-up.

We all know in 3a there aren’t very many cornerbacks that have to defend against a good passing game.(Especially in the CPL) Because most teams concentrate on running the football and don’t have to pass. GP has a very good passing QB but if you were at the game CS never got pressure on him, he had what seemed like an eternity to throw it. I don’t know if CS players were getting tired or if GP’s linemen are better at defending a pass rush. A team like Collegiate is very good at passing the ball but I don’t think they have much of a running game. If GP can get to thier QB they should be able to disrupt thier timing and make them do what they do not do best. I believe CS did this last year even though thier corners aren’t the best at defending and won.

I don’t think CS or GP will roll through the playoffs. I believe GP will be tested with Collegiate. If they get past them they should have it fairly easy until substate. I don’t think Cs will have a problem until Scott City, they are gonna be tough especially after what happened last year against GP. If CS and GP do what they do best (WIN) then it will be a great substate game.

Good to see the posts here get a bit more in tune with some civility. I was able to watch the game tape and what it seemed to me the GP line did a good job at buying the QB some time, but he also had good pocket awareness. he sidestepped out blitzer like he knew it was coming, what surprised me about him, is that this is the biggest game of the year, and he stayed poised and lit us up. Enough about him. WHAT ABOUT BRILL…. I’m glad we have him……

Well, I hope you overlook GP. if you happen to make it past them, we will run it down your throats, Just like last year. their wide reciever is probably one of the best in the state, and from what I hear, the back-up QB could be their starter if he could run the wishbone a bit better. did you see the 55 yard pass that hit their guy perfectly in stride? No matter, I thinkg the CPL is too strong again this year., Our guys are too strong for most teams to handle, and brill will get an easy 150-200 yards a game….Conway will win it all again. I dont see what was so special about what that back-up QB did? All he did was stand there and throw it as far as he could. The other quarterback could have done the samething but they never called any passes like that when he was in. So the back up did a nice job but i dont see why he is being praised so much. Anyone could have went out there and threw the ball as far as they can to that receiver he is bound to catch it

OMG, here we go again. Just when the fire is burning out on the officiating, now we are going down the cheap & dirty path. Game is over, let it go, get ready for the next game, hope for a rematch. QB took a big hit and in the process got his hand cut open, you could tell he wanted back in, but couldn’t stop bleeding(I heard 15 stitches). Same play a “roughing the passer” was called…it happens. The cut happened, doubt he was shanked. lol. If anyone knows anything about CS and GP, they play hard and hit hard, real hard…cheap & dirty, not so much as just flat hardnosed football. If you don’t like it, don’t play a contact game. LOL, really wanted to say “play soccer”, but then we’d get the soccer fanatics riled up and none of us want them hear…unless they want to kick for us! Personally, I want CS to win out for a rematch…I want GP to win out because I am a fan…and I would even say CS wants GP to win out because we all like to see WCS lose…CPL rules. ;-)

JAG, You don’t want to get in a discussion about cheap shots and dirty play, but then you throw in the GP comment. You might want to sit down and take a close look at some game film. There were hands to the face, cut blocks, blocks in the back, holding, etc etc on both sides. Take a good look at how many blocks in the back on GP’s DB’s. Look at some of the holding from BOTH lines. On at least one play a lineman has his hat pushed on top of his head with his chinstrap around his nose from hands to the facemask.
Sit down, watch a film and take count before you make BS statements like that.

I’m thinking i would learn how to stop the pass if I were CS….How does a kid who never started a game rip the #1 team in 3A….alhough he did throw the interception at the end. Their wide receiver was wide open, if he makes that throw, then we are all talking about it………

Bugner cannot pass…he is ok but not like the back up. He under throws his receivers most of the time and the only reason he has TD passes is because the WR’s make the plays…Kinda sounds like Bell and Carrol eh…. so don’t say Bugner can pass.

  91. Your a joke says:

I know for a fact Bugner has the biggest arm on that team. He has had the best arm since his sophmore year when he could out throw anyone on the team. So maybe you shouldn’t base your statement off one game. Tomlinson didn’t do anything but throw it as far as he could or into the dirt and when he tried to put some touch on it he threw a pick about fifteen yards short.

Bugner has a weak arm…One game? I’ve been to all 7. His receivers bail him out and get the YAC for him. That pick was thrown off his back foot. And again the coach calls the plays not the qbs. If e wanted to pass it wasn’t up to him. And to be clear I would like to see you go and pass as far and onstride like he did I. The first 6 games. When they threw on average 4-6 passes a game. He had 2 or more perfect games throwing 100% on his passes. So take a seat and shut your mouth unless you can do better.

It was a great game to watch, someone had to lose. Refs always tork someone off, CS and GP always beat the crap outta each other and the state title generally comes home to the CPL!!!

Funny thing reading all these posts…. I know both players and go to school with them, both are very respectful of the other and only care about one thing…winning. they both support the coach. I think we all know that we are lucky to have them both. I don’t think puetz plays the family card, he just wants to win. and Bugner has been in the program for 5 years, so he deserves the chance to lead the team. Tomlinson will do it next year, and you guys can write about how some poor underclassman is getting screwed because puetz is only playing tomlinson because it’s his 23rd cousin twice removed. Get over it.
Aaron did very well on Friday and did not just throw the ball as far as he could, if he did, noone could catch it….. He was very upset after throwing the interception, but we wouldn’t have been in the game without him. and yes i am a girl..lol
