Another night of high school football down. One week of the regular season remaining.
Let’s chat about tonight.
I covered Heights vs. Southeast and what a crazy game it was. Daniel Deshazer returned Southeast’s first punt early in the game to the Southeast 11, and Heights scored. Deshazer then ran in a 46-yard punt return in the final period for the deciding score in the 28-21 victory. Heights is 2-0 and will play Derby next week for the district title.
In this game, Southeast threw three INTs (Heights’ Evan Wessel had two), Heights threw two INTs, Heights lost two fumbles, Southeast lost one.
Joseph Randle had 169 rushing yards for Southeast, while Heights was led by backup quarterback Matt Reed’s 145 rushing. Reed replaced John Moreland, who was hurt in last week’s game. Not a bad start for the sophomore.
In other action, South ends a 38-year playoff drought, beating Campus to go 2-0 in district. The Titans will play Northwest next week for the district title. Congrats to South. I’m all about ending the bad streaks!
Abilene beat Topeka Hayden 21-20. This is a good win for Abilene and shows that Hayden is no where near the team it was last year. Rose Hill beat Andover Central by 32 points. Now Central’s in a spot where it needs to beat W. Trinity on Thursday to advance. Trinity eked out a two-point win over Mulvane.
Derby beat East, Goddard gets its first win — at Garden City. Goddard-Maize on Friday will be for a playoff berth because Garden City is 0-2 and Dodge City is 2-0.
In 5A, Gardner-Edgerton beat St. Thomas Aquinas by two points.
Salina Central lost to Emporia by four and has no shot at a playoff berth. Salina Central’s two district losses are by a combined seven points.
McPherson rebounds with a big win over Great Bend, while Hays is stomped and shut out by Hutch in its first loss of the season.
Hutch Trinity blows Sedgwick away 54-0, while Collegiate does the same to Bluestem, 55-0.
Conway Springs and Garden Plain both win big.
Madison suffers its first loss, a 30-6 loss to unbeaten Lebo.
Pretty Prairie continues to win, while Caldwell did get the victory over South Haven, 57-36.

Is there anyone in the KSHSAA with a lick of sense who can come up with a better system for qualifying for State. You have a 1-7 Goddard team facing a 2-6 Maize team next week and the winner (using the term winner loosely) goes to the state playoffs? I was curious how other states do it and it is apparent they don’t worry about “League” titles. I believe it is Texas and Oklahoma that play 3 out of district games then the other 6 games are all district games. That makes so much more sense than our system in Kansas.
BTW- Thanks Jameson Moore for promising and delivering a big game for my sons Birthday. Maybe not the yardage you hoped but 4 touchdowns will do.

Derby gets revenge over Heights. Then hosts Goddard first round.
South keeps Robinson short of city league rushing record.
Goddard gets second win but nobody is there to see it.
Liberal pulls the upset over BC- Tough to win at Liberal (just putting this in for bulletin board material for BC)
Had to laugh at Jim Kobbes statement that Hutch is #15 in the latest BCS poll. Good one Jim.

DerbyDad, I’m with you, but the AD’s and principals aren’t, and that is all that matters with KSHSAA. The way the classifications are divided, all but the lowest class sizes are set up to have a number of schools that are powers of two, thus the only district setups that mathematically could work with the same number of schools in each district are ones with four or eight schools.
I say set up 8-team districts; add a game at the front end of the season so you can be sure to schedule your traditional rival or a marquee game that isn’t in your district; de-emphasize leagues for football only; qualify only two teams per district for the playoffs; but add a postseason game for non-qualifiers against the team in the next district with the same ranking in district games.

Great player not noticed much because of the lack of success of the team this year is Cameron Fisher for Goddard. Moved from quarterback to reciever and after only 5 games at reciever is leading the league in catches and I believe in the top 20 in the state.

If Goddard wins next week and makes the playoffs at 2-7 is that enough for the current coach to keep his job? I use the term coach loosely since he is more like the team manager since he doesn’t coach the offense or defense and makes not play calls at all. Not sure what he does. If he stays he needs to take over his anemic offense, averaging 11 points, or his defense which is giving up 37 ppg. He needs to show he can either actually coach and stop letting his assistants kill his overall record.

Bout 6A- whadda think ? KC area teams along with Man. and JC, and with W-NW, Derby , and possibly South…. Out west there’s Dodge… Could be pretty interesting, 5A is forgone conclusion, Hutch could probably beat the Chiefs LOL, (Hey, I’m still a fan) I’m a Dodge dad, looking forward to Nov.!

5A will be the toughest state playoffs as far as the upper divisions go. Hutch, Bishop Carrol, MacPherson and Gardner/Edgerton all are talented with good Coaches and as far as I know No major injuries.
6A should be dominated by Northern Schools like Junction City Manhattan or Olathe North.
As far as Hutch beating the Cheifs I remember once when Barry Switzer was Coaching OU and wanted to play Dallas in an exhibition game for Charity. Not sure If the NFL or NCAA said NO. That OU may have beaten that Dallas Team. It is pretty impressive that a one dementional team like Hutch can just roll over opponent after opponent.
Good for you Goddard girl supporting your team. I was there for almost every Derby game during the lean years. Even made many of the trips to Dodge and Garden when we played them.

Lou what have you been smoking? Have you even seen Hutch play ? Did you see what they did to Rockhurst? But your point is moot when they won’t even play. O North may be the best 6A team. If Derby gets by Heights they should have a weak team in the first round because there are too many weak 6A teams that will make the playoffs. But they will need to play the best game of the season to even be close to a Junction or Manhattan. I will give them credit for getting better all season and I’ll give the defense the props deserved as the strength of this years team.

haha rockhurst is’nt all that great my friend. hutch is the real deal don’t get me wrong i just think Olathe North is better. they have the best defense in the state hands down. idk a whole lot about junction this year i know that manhattan has a pretty good running back and tate snyder a pretty dang good linebacker. if we play either one of those teams i hope its sub state and not the second round lol

Random thoughts- No one is going to be close to Hutch in 5A this year- all of the other contenders are playing for a chance to get smoked in the championship game. Playoff system in Kansas is a joke and could be tweaked very easily. Give only the district winners an automatic berth and then award at-large bids- I know that is subjective but so much better than what we have now.

I didn’t listen to my Dr when he told me to quit and now I am looking at total knee replacement in a few years. LOu#2 never criticize someone elses injury people are all different. Some can rehab and be just fine and some cannot.
