Playoff football results (11-7)
Nov. 7, 2009 @ 11:36 p.m. by Joannaby joanna
Saw a great first-half between Abilene and Rose Hill. Quarterback Tyler Shirley was excellent, so were Laqua Mayes and Derrick Decker as Rose Hill took a 17-0 lead in the first half. The second half, I saw lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of flags. Oh my. It was awful. Slowed the game down. So many holding penalties.
Doesn’t matter, Rose Hill moves on, will play at Buhler next week.
Other area teams getting wins include Andale over Wellington, Hutch Trinity over Conway Springs, Collegiate over Hillsboro. I’m doing this off the top of my head, so feel free to add your thoughts on the night or a game you were at.
I saw some outstanding athletes, including the three Rose Hill kids mentioned above. I also was impressed with Curry Sexton from Abilene. He lived up to everything I had heard about him.

Jake Reffner had a decent game for Buhler with 3 rushing TDs and 3 passing TDS, finishing with over115 yards rushing and 200 yards passing—all in the first half, as Buhler put up 43 points and amassed 424 yards of offense. Jordan Oden was held to 184 yards and 3 TDs.
Should be a good game with Rose Hill next week, with both tems having good RBs and QBs

Dont have full list but just a couple to add that list of talent are Tyler Matthews QB (SO) 1000yds with a horrible team in only part of the season snaps.Hes a big strong 6′3″+ and growing with an excellent arm and toughness mental and physical you dont see in SR Qb,s let alone a soph. Dillon Call(SO) 10+ a game with 3 tfls and about a sack a game these numbers from the Will. I believe most every player is leading there team to the playoffs aside from Goddard which speaks for itself. List is longer but i dont have numbers now but Conway,Mulvane,Salina, Players state wide. ok let the feeding frenzy of Brian Butler haters begin. lol

KS Football…There are plenty of young men excelling that are not part of Butler’s parade. Butler’s just another trainer and there are many good ones. He’s just got some good advertising having the Brown brothers in his pocket. You are way too quick to defend him. The real separation comes down to the kids that have the talent who are willing to work hard to maximize their potential. You should not call out your own kid. How many Hutchinson kids are with Butler? Was there one? Maybe Stucky? I wonder how they won all those state championships with only one Butler kid. It’s inconceivable. How many from Junction City and Emporia? How about Smith Center? How did they win without a Potential Player? Butler didn’t make Blaize Foltz the giant he is. He also didn’t get him to set a TCU bench press record. Butler has his niche, but he can hardly be the guiding factor in those teams being in the playoffs. More likely, their parents were looking for their kids to get a little extra edge, and went to Butler. That isn’t to say that the football results for those teams would not have been any different than what they are.

Thank you for the support of all the parents and kids who are willing to look at facts, not jibberish(Regardless of the source). These kids work extremely hard with me and at their schools. The one guy is right Im just a trainer, but not just like all the other’s. Because, if I was there would be about 50 players a year signing 4 year scholarships in the Wichita area. The only opinions that truly matter are those of the kids and parents who work with me, and they seem pretty happy. I go to two to three games a week and hundreds of parents come to me complaining about their son and how he’s dedicated himself to the school and is getting minimal to no help in recruiting, and that’s why my opinion of some coaches is not that good. Dreiling, Schuckman, Brack, Slade are some coaches that I feel really work their butts of to help get ALL their kids to the next level and I am totally appreciative. This is about teamwork it’s not a one man show. If helping kids get exposure is bad then I am guilty and will continue to be guilty, but the proof is in the RESULTS!!!! At first it was I only help the best kids, but when kids work for years and become the best, then what. I will be having some parents on my podcast next week to speak to some of these things, I hope all of you listen(potentialplayers.com, the potential players podcast). And, Im fat but it doesn’t stop me from helping kids. So get your skinny butt up and do what Im doing since it’s so easy. Good Luck.

First off, I train kids who play little league, who play J.V. and who are just trying to get better. It doesn’t take me being a high school coach to help an array of kids. I coached for 6 years and helped kids then, but I felt this was the most effective way to help a larger group of kids. Secondly, you don’t know any credentials that I have or am getting. If I wanted to coach I would be coaching, but thanks for the suggestion.

Joanna, I am with you on not ripping kids on this site or any other – its just not acceptable under any circumstances. But come on, you “have no problem with people talking about their own kids”. Being braggadocious on this site or through any other venue about your own kid is wrong. It puts undue pressure on the kid plus parents generally have an inflated opinion of how good their kid is. Talk about the team and talk about other players but not your own kid. If your kid is good, people will know it and will discuss it not to mention attention from media folks like yourself.

Brian (if that is really you), I highly doubt you are doing anything but making sure you have an inside track on making more money. Here is a suggestion for ya Big B. How about you quit ripping high school coaches for doing their jobs. As a former Rule 10 coach you know very well that they don’t make very much money doing what they do, and they also put in long hours aside from their day job which is teaching. If parents want to send their kids to a con and a fraud like yourself that is their business.

Coaches need to do there job and help kids not matter what.

Crack, you need to post more often…very funny stuff.
I don’t have a dog in the fight in the Potential Players matter, but it seems to me that our society is totally OVERREGULATED by government or quasi-government organizations like NCAA or KSHAA. They put in rules to stop the really blantant stuff from happening, but these rules also penalize guys like Butler who are trying to help kids get better and get to college. The Bryce Brown deal was a shame but thankfully it worked out. The Desmond Bryant thing at OSU is a crime too … takes a good kid and great athlete out of a program for what looks like a very small transgression.
Basically I am sick of organizations and governments who legislate everything down to the lowest common denominator in the interest of “fairness or justice”. Think of what is best for a kid, not what is best for political correctness.
Keep helpin’ the kids, Butler. And if you ever get to make any money on your PP business, more power to you. From what I hear, you don’t make much and you let lots of poor deserving kids work out with you for nothing.

I have avoided posting on the board for time and I have found I am happier because of it. I have been a vocal critic of Butler but I have come to the realization that if parents are willing to send money his way that is their business- caveat emptor. What riles me Butler is the way you and your supporters run down coaches in the city. I struggle to find a cause? They wouldn’t hire you as an assistant? They don’t kiss your feat? You have no CL athletes in your stable and you blame them for that? What is the cause? I’m surprised a former Cl athlete wouldn’t have more appreciation for the job these men do that quite frankly, most suburban coaches would not do. The CL coaches have to do so much more than just coach based on the truly horrible home lives these young men have. Parents in jail (or dead), parents who kicked the student-athlete out of the house and now they are essentially homeless. Students with no money for pay to play. No parent support what so ever. have you been to parent night at a Cl game? Contrast that with a parent night in the burbs. I’m not knocking any suburban coach as there are many great ones out there but don’t equate the job one of them does to what a coach in the city does. And why aren’t there more CL kids in the PP stable? I’ve heard you talk proudly about your sliding scale “Pay what you can”. You have talked at length about how you are here to provide help and guidance and notoriety to the kids of Wichita yet you chase money to the burbs. Attack your critics, hell attack me, but don’t attack the coaches who do more every day to help the truly needy and often lost young men that make up Wichita public schools than any coach out in “white flight” land would ever do.

Voice — I really try to stay out of the hot topic areas because there’s usually so much vitriol that I merely go in to try and cool it off.
Wow, How — I was answering the question as you responded. But if you’ve been on here long enough, you know I stick up for coaches.
As for my interactions with coaches, I know the majority of coaches are dedicating themselves to improve their athletes, get their athletes scholarships and help them become better citizens. And it’s not necessarily in that order.
I don’t care where the coach is, big, little, powerhouse or not. If you’re coaching, you’re looking out for your kids. I know how little the coaches make monetarily, I know the hours they put in, I know the duties they have, I know they teach as well, I know they that there’s so much more that they have to deal with than just x’s, o’s and games.
There’s parent issues, sad issues, grade issues, etc. It’s a lot, and it drains so many.
But they do it because they love it.
Is there a place for folks like Brian Butler? Of course. People are willing to pay — that’s why there are personal trainers and big corporations geared to it.
Can they work in harmony? That’s up to both parties.
Trust me, I’m in no one’s back pocket. I have my own mind and I’m free to express it.

The reason I am so hard on some coaches is because I talk to the kids and parents who play for them, and get their feedback on what’s going on in their programs. In most cases it is very disappointing. I don’t chase down anyone, and am available to everyone. Actually since the last time I posted on here, which was probably last year; I am training a lot more guys from Wichita. Not as many as I would like to help though. Coaching on the field is just one small piece of my issues. My major issue is low accountability for academics and social behavior that the city kids are held to. Ive seen coaches step in when a kid is close to becoming ineligible for football, but any other time they let it go. I’ve also seen coaches care more about kids playing than graduating. I’ve been blessed to have parents and kids who care about the big picture, and are willing to work to get it.
Basically, city coaches need more help; but some have too much pride to ask for it. And, no I’m not an ex con, and yes I have busted a rap lately. But, it was most likely a Christian rap verse or something to build the self esteem of others. Probably something that you would care for, How about….
This Friday on my podcast I will discuss some of these issues and some resolutions that we could put in place to help. potentialplayers.com.
Also, I agree with a previous post and, I have seen some great little league coaches who I would love to see at the high school level. It’s a fact that some are better coached than some of our high school teams.
I’m out. Taking another year break. How about….Go Coach him up!

Not skinny, I fell I have a positive working relationship with Schuckman, Brack, Beason, Guzman and before I read the New York Times article, I thought I had a good one with Byers too; but I saw different by his words. And to be honest with you, Ive never met the coach at West, and no coach has ever told me to my face that they have any issue with me. But, I’ve heard some whispers of some talking behind my back. That wouldn’t stop me from helping any kid in their program, because I don’t hold grudges against anyone. I do believe if we could work better together we could help many more kids sign 4 year scholarships, and that has been my goal since day one. But, I will be honest about everything that’s going on and I wont brush it under the rug to make more money in my business. The facts are the facts, but it can get better.
Good Question.

They put in rules to stop the really blantant (sic) stuff from happening, but these rules also penalize guys like Butler who are trying to help kids get better and get to college. The Bryce Brown deal was a shame but thankfully it worked out. The Desmond Bryant thing at OSU is a crime too … takes a good kid and great athlete out of a program for what looks like a very small transgression.
I have to believe that if there was any wrong doing with the Bryce Brown deal it was an oversight on Mr. Butler’s and Bryce’s parents part.
As far as Desmond Bryant; there’s no other way to put it but he knowingly lied, it wasn’t a big deal until then! If he’s lying about that then what else is he lying about?? Sorry but integrity is everything and unfortunately he learned that lesson too late!

“Joanna, I am with you on not ripping kids on this site or any other – its just not acceptable under any circumstances. ”
Bob”if” which it seems this is directed at me i have many posts rarely do they even include him and when they do usually its part of a something else and at most include correct stats. 95% of posts concerning D are NOT by me so im not sure how thats my fault. I talk about Teams most of the year and support ours %100. My son is extreamly grounded as well so i guess i dont really get any of your points .I guess im only allowed to mention every other player in the state ? If this site is for High School sports then to talk about teams, coachs and players seems to me exactly the right place.

Yet another blanket statement aimed at all CL coaches (never any coaches from the burbs where you make your money). I guess everything is A-OK there. CL coaches need help? Well I’m sure running them down on a message board, or on your website, or on the radio, or to the parents that pay you is a great help to them. Keep up your Christian ways…

Im not trying to get any credit just pointing out that in my opinion theres a way to go about things.

I think you should open your own school Brian. You could be the teacher, coach, principle, athletic director. If I remember correctly Brian, you couldn’t hack it at Fort Hays State, did you get your degree at Butler County? If so, what was your degree in?

Joanna, I like the “nasty stuff”. Its not boring at all. If you haven’t noticed, this blog is flying along, not limping like most of the PC ones.
And, redcoalcarpet, you must not be a parent… all kids lie, particularly when they asked if they did something wrong and no proof is offered. Desmond is all of 19 years old. His lying is not a serious transgression. Some kids grow up faster than others. This will help him grow up but it is an awfully steep penalty to pay for attempting to cover up some pretty minor stuff.

On a side-note. I broke into this topic of conversation …oh about 8 from the beginning and Jo it was all with good intentions to just congratulate you on your award, then things went completely south! I make one little innuendo about, I’m guessing now, a touchy subject and then people start in on the Butler thing and all … breaks loose! What the heck? Did find one thing out on how to get a post going though…bring up Butler or “roids” and people start coming out of the wood-work!

Wow, that is a whole lot of information there. Lots of posts.
I would like to say that if someone feels they want to spend money on BB services, well fine, let them. I think these kids would be as talented with many trainers or coaches. To me, what Butler brings to the table is a knowledge of a recruiting system and the things it takes to get your kid through it. Others also have this ability, but if you don’t know those things, Butler is one guy to go to that could help you in that arena.
I think one of the issues that people have is when it is insinuated that Team X (name a team) would not be in the playoffs were it not for Player X (name a Butler trainee) being on that team.
Give props to Butler for what he does well, and that while he is trying to earn a living, he is also trying to improve the chances of each kid he is working with. I also recognize that each of those players have the skillls in place to make Butler look good too.

God loves honesty. No USD 259 school has one a state championship in over 25 years. It’s a shame that no high school student(or anybody of legal drinking age) in the district has ever seen a state championship in one of the city schools. I don’t doubt how hard the coaches are working, but they may want to work smarter (Let those who are good at something do it, and dont try to do it all yourself). We have the most talented kids in the state and Dreiling has taken a program who had less talent and developed those kids and that program into greatness. He has given a roadmap to those who will take note. It’s just amazing to me how people with lesser talent can be more successful than those with more. That’s why I am frustrated with our coaches, that’s not taking shots at them those are just the facts(look at the list of players since 1985). I hope to see the city schools take some lessons from the great coaches that they have in their mist. Seriously this time, no more posts from me for awhile. I’m tired of the same people posting too. I’m officially out of the ring. Just for the record the year I was at Hays is the only year that we ever went to the NCAA DII playoffs, 13 TD’s(How about…that’s another one of my life stats for you since you bought my bio). Peace!
Go Heights! Win State!

Good for you Bubba, you scored 13 tds at a second rate school. Did you graduate? Because, you know college is about academics first, football second. You can preach all you want about getting that precious D-1 scholarship, but it is what you do with that scholarship that matters. How many of those kids are going to play in the NFL?
You can’t help yourself Bubba, you want to spout off. By the way, did you train Arthur Jr. to be a special teams player on a sub-par ACC team? Just wondering.
