It’s Monday! And I’m starting basketball preview interviews this week, in addition to the quarterfinals of state football. Should be a fun week.

So take this open discussion in two ways — or add your own:

1. What’s the best playoff game of the week? (For me, Scott City at Collegiate, Emporia at Carroll)

2. What basketball teams will be the ones we need to keep an eye on? (Heights is an obvious answer, but I like East and North, too. For girls, it could be a down year in the area, but Heights and Carroll should be some of the best again.)

The City League should provide some excellent basketball this year. I agree with Joanna that Heights is the best, and may in fact go undefeated, but cannot afford to let up a bit with any sort of off night against East or North. Those will be great games to watch.

Joanna, I say take a break! Soccer season is over for now. Relax, you’ve earned it! You too J. Long! “Holy Cow”, the hate is gonna rain down on me now! LOL! No, in all seriousness, I’m looking forward to basketball season and all the great action. Should see some great talent and teams from around the area!

Rose Hill at Buhler should be a barnburner. Both of these teams lost to Andale and they are fighting for a re-match with the Indians. There will be a lot of talent on the field—–linemen and skill people.I expect a high scoring game.

    Buhler 43 Rose Hill 35

I think RH vs Buhler is a pickem. One thought of mine says Buhler wins by 2 Td’s and another thought says RH wins by 7. It’s too bad I can’t watch the game because it should be a fine one. Good luck to both teams and congrats to both for having great seasons so far this year!

Derby looked good last week. Could have been a much bigger loss for Northwest. If they paly the same way this week they may go all the way. Northwest was an embarasement to the city league. After the game very poor sportsmanship!! I am glad my kids left the city league in the late 80s when @ least it was not @ this point. Interesting that they seemed to pick on hegepeth more than the other corner #5. Looked like Hegepeth was playing very soft? Did show pretty good speed catching & stopping Ethridge. 5 missed some tackles early on but played well in the 2nd half. 24 Oaks looked good. #2 Moore looked as good as I have seen him look hard runner. I assume the #47 is hurt? Has been solid when I saw him but played little. I would be a little worried if I had to play this team right now. A lot of weapons & a coach that is not afraid to pull out anything. However they must play well. They have showed signs of both being great & of being very average.which team shows up?
I will say the first? Derby 28- Dodge 17

  8. EMAB says:

SC vs. Collegiate will be one heck of a game. You’ve got Scott City coming from the far west where competion has been limited to play the private school from the city. This game could get dirty.

  9. ABC 123 says:

I think Dodge will show up big time against Derby. Jace Banner is coming off a 300+ rushing performance and is hungry. Dodge has outscored their opponents 369-139. I know Derby has Hedgepeth, but can they stop the run? My Prediction. Dodge City 27. Derby 14.

EMAB?? Is that ‘every man a Beaver’? If it is, it is a poor ripoff of an even dumber saying. But it should be a great game!

After checking some stats seems like derby has done pretty good @ stopping the run. Should be a good game. Banner how did he end up in dodge? didnt he play in Garden city as a Soph? Cousin to Broderick Smith? Dont see anyway he will have those kind of yards @ Derby. But that is why they play the game!

D-LITE Derby stop the run how many yards did Hutch get on the ground against Derby? lol But Dodge City couldnt beat Hays or Great Bend and Hutch blew them out my pick is Derby if they play a Good game depends which derby teams shows up they have played a lot harder schedule. Go Panthers!

  13. D-LITE says:

Last I checked Hutch was from another planet! But your point is kind of what I am thinking Dodge plays a very weak schedule. I have not seen them play but have seen Derby play 4 games now. Think the Derby D has gotten better since Hutch. The Derby O is what will have to show up. They looked pretty good @ Northwest. Can hardly wait to go see the Hutch- BC game next week. Hutch will probably walk away with it but if they have a weak spot it is the secondary. That might keep it close but I really think the O of Hutch can put up 50-60 on about anyone! Can you imagine what they would be like if they could pass even a little?

  14. Doc says:

Hutch has found a passing game with Cooper Bell. Bell threw for almost 90 yards and had a TD pass to Dinwiddie against Great Bend. Against Liberal he threw for over 80 yards and had 2 TD passes – to Dinwiddie and to Scott Weber.

DC/ Derby… Should be a great game, depends, as always, what team shows up, (Except for Hutch, I think they could win on a bad hair day LOL!) Haven’t seen Derby play, but from from what I’ve heard, they’re pretty good, but we ain’t no slouches either. The GB game was without Jace, had a 20 point lead at half, and lost by one. The Hays game, we had the ball inside the 20 four times and didn’t score, can’t win games like that. Our D is also pretty good, shut down Topeka who put over 40 against JC. As for Jace being here, it’s because I married his mom, and he wanted to be with her. He’s a great back but we also have 10 other talented guys out there…… Comes down to who wants it the most. Wish I could be there, have to listen to the game on the combine:(

  18. scooby says:

Well KS, I don’t know, never been on the field with him, but from my personal experience (many, many years ago), there’s a lot more kids mouthing at each other than not. Jace is a pretty quiet kid, but is very competitive, so it wouldn’t surprise me.
