10:20 p.m. — We will have a Wichita-area team in the Class 6A final. Derby beat Dodge City and Heights won at Manhattan. How about that!

Buhler beat Rose Hill, Hayden beat Andale, Hutchinson beat Salina South, Bishop Carroll handled Emporia.

If you were at a game or want to chat, have at it.

8 p.m. — Andale’s driving in the final minute of the first half, down 8-7 to Topeka Hayden. Saw the funniest thing — Hayden coach Bill Arnold came on the field in a timeout to yell at the officials about a late hit on his qb (also his son), by Andale. It wasn’t called. Anyway, as he’s yelling at the officials, he’s penalized and then a police officer walks onto the field, and she stood next to the official.

Not sure what she was planning. Not sure if she had her Taser ready. Pretty sure, though, that Bill Arnold wasn’t planning a knockdown or anything.

Andale leads 10-8.

7 p.m. — I’m sitting at Andale for the Class 4A quarterfinal playoff game with Topeka Hayden. I saw this game last year in the semifinals when Hayden had TJ McGreevy. I know Hayden’s not what it was in 2008 when it won the title, but I can’t imagine a blowout. Of course, I didn’t imagine a blowout of the Buhler-Andale game, either.

Well, I hate to leave anyone out. Especially when Carroll absolutely took it to Emporia. I did call that game, though. Andale vs. Hayden — I didn’t call that one, although I knew Hayden would be tough. Which it was.
I didn’t expect Buhler to win that big over Rose Hill, either. Although I expected a Buhler win.

Interesting how 2 teams from the same district are in the final four of 6A. What does that say about the district alignment?

It is kind of sad to think that next week will just be a preview of how Carrol will get pounded in their district the next couple of years. I hope Bell and his boys can keep in close. Also interesting for J. Long to say that Carrol’s coaches are the best in the city. Anyone taking notice of what Rick Wheeler has done at Heights? I would have to say he would be the city league coach of the year. He and the guy from Derby have done the best coaching jobs this year becuase their teams are peaking at the right time.

I’d say that it says that it’s a strong district! Hopefully the third time will be the charm for Derby to come away with a win playing Heights!

i knew Heights would beat Manhattan. Anyone that saw the Maize-Manhattan game would agree. Although Manhattan ended up winning going away Maize hung with them and was right there at halftime. Heights beats Derby and makes the state final.

You can say what you want about the district allignment… but in this case it is a good thing. It split up Heights and Derby in the playoffs which made this game happen at the right time. Instead of landing in the first or second round… they are split up and the only chance of meeting again was in the state semi-finals… and it happened.

No matter what… it will be a great game!!! And I agree that Rick Wheeler has done a phenomenal job of putting the wheels back on the truck when they had fallen off!!!! I am proud to be a Falcon and work with some awesome coaches!!!

Too bad all of my wrestlers play football and I will only have about 20 kids at first practice ;)…. However, it will be worth it!

  22. Hovpen says:

After watching the tape of it for about 20 times, I’m still trying to figure out why the ejection? The kid took a hit from a SC player under the chin (after the whilstle) and responded with a pop to the shoulder pads, no punch, no closed fist. Clearly not enough to warrent sitting out another game and I’m sure if KSHSAA officials would view the tape they would ask why no flag on SC for their players action after the whistle.

No defense, just what I see on the tape and I”m sure I’ll get bashed for it.

Otherwise, one of the hardest hitting games I’ve seen in several years.

  23. Pigpen says:

Yep Scott City had some hitters on their team and all their hitting was done BEFORE THE WHISTLE BLEW! It’s amusing that Collegiate’s top reciever will be le master of le bench for their last game of the season.

Buff1 thats an awesome statement about Wheeler at Heights. Didn’t BC win that game? Silly question, we all already know that. But wait a minute, isn’t BC undefeated? Again a dumb question, we all already know that. It is great for Wichita that Heights has made it this far, it gives the GWAL some legitimacy. Your comment about Wheeler being Coach of the Year is silly however. BC CONSISTENTLY is at the top of our league and nobody prepares their kids like Coach Schuckman and Coach Nance at BC.

Without question Schuckman will AGAIN be the Coach of the Year in the GWAL.

As far as the BC v. Hutch game, why do you care so much? Don’t you have your own game to concern yourself with? I will refrain from making any comments about the Heights team with respect to their game v. Derby this Friday. Suffice it to say, they better strap their helmets on or Derby will hand them their helmets.

    Good luck Heights!

  25. Coach Church says:

I might be mistaken… and I can’t back it up with stats… but a little birdie once told me that after this season… Alan Schuckman is 4-5 against Heights and Rick Wheeler. Does that make BC dominant over Heights and the GWAL… A lot of those GWAL titles are shared as well.

In my opinion, two phenomenal coaches in the league. Both coaches work with completely different, however difficult clientel and both seem to make something click. It would be hard to say one coach is better than the other. It would be fun to have them switch roles for a year and coach the others team :) haha!

I am biased to Coach Wheeler….. However, the coach of the year for the GWAL is not going to come from Heights or Bishop Carroll.

    GO FALCONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    GO GWAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
