Wichita area football
Nov. 21, 2009 @ 9:55 p.m. by Joannaby joanna
Wichita Collegiate defeated Norton today to advance to next week’s Class 3A title game. Heights held off Derby Friday night to advance to the 6A title game (the first City League team to be in the 6A title game since 1997). Hutchinson beat Bishop Carroll Friday night to advance to the 5A title game for the second straight year (and its seventh straight title game appearance, with five coming in 6A).
Yeah, Wichita-area football is pretty good, huh?
Looking at the season from this point, your take on the City League this season? Was it better than we gave it credit for while the season was going on? It certainly looks that way with Carroll playing well with Hutchinson (one of the best teams this state has seen in recent seasons) and Heights advancing in 6A.

Joanna, don’t you mean Heights is the first USD 259 school to be in a championship game since 1997? Carroll played for the title just two years ago and lost to Blue Valley West.

Are we talking about “Wichita Area” or city league ? We all know BC has a quality program and Heights (extreamly talented) is heading to State this season but the CL is not a quality league. The CL is the least assignment sound/ contitioned league in this aera period. Athletes all over the field to be sure but quality football its not.Im sure this will get the CL honks up in arms but anyone who looks at the play on the field will know exactly what im talking about.

Well, we now know which bell will be buying a ring this year. Nothing taken away from what Bell has done for his team, but if you watch Jablonski throw he is more accurate and a much better leader. and cuter too.

I would love to see Jablonski play against Hutch defense or several others that Bell did and come up with the numbers he did. Jablonski did great for the Spartans but these two play against totally differnt teams/leagues.Not taking anything away from either just Carroll had to face alot tougher defenses.

I think you meant which ‘Blake’….and while I admire Jablonski’s career, I do think Hutch MIGHT have been a bit better than Norton.

Jablonski is Ok, but having watched both a few times, Bell is way better. Jablonski would easily be on the ground before Bell in a scramble/ pass rush situation. Bell is a much stronger QB. Jablonski doesn’t have the legs of Bell.

BC trip to the semi’s caught up with them they had a very easy road, Bell gets a ton of yards short needed to go deep but never really has good QB though but alot to learn and show.

My son grew up playing high level sports with both. I’ve seen them both for a long time. Bell is a runner/passer. Great legs, above average speed, strong arm, superb quickness. Jablonski is a pinpoint passer with a strong arm. Throws the ball with great accuracy rolling right or left. Is he going to rush for 100 yds a game? Probably not. Is he capable of going through his reads and picking you apart? Absolutely. Could you put him behind Carroll’s line, revert to the short passing game, and put a lot of points on the board against Hutch? Maybe. Would Bell have had a great year with a smaller line? Probably. You are comparing apples and oranges. Too many variables in play. They are both very talented and operate well in the offensive schemes they lead. I say hurray and good luck to both of them. They are both great kids.

CL coaches should be commended for the work they do and have done. Overall I thought the CL would be down this year (and it was in some regards but so was the entire west half of the state) but several teams performed quite well and one is continuing to do so. CL coaches have to deal with so much more than many coaches in the burbs do and it takes a special individual to do that kind of job. Kudos gentlemen.

I do think the the way the City League played out may have led to the false perception that it was weaker this year. First, Northwest, who was the unanimous league preseason favorite, starts out with a marginal victory over an improved Kapaun team then gets beat by Bishop Carroll who was thought not to lost to much to compete for the league championship. Carroll shutsout Heights in the opener 28-0, then gets beat by KMC 27-7 and then Heights dominates Northwest the City League favorite. So Northwest’s start did not help. South and West were much improved and no one gave them much credit early on. The thought was that the top teams were more down then South and West were improved. I think they proved otherwise.
